New Venom Creative Team Revealed: Al Ewing, Bryan Hitch and Ram V

For the last week, Marvel had hinted at a major announcement, and this time it lives up to the hype; the new creative team of Venom is revealed. Writers Al Ewing and Ram V. will be joined by artist Bryan Hitch.

Marvel’s press release quotes Ram V.

“When my editors at Marvel reached out about taking on Venom alongside Al Ewing and Bryan Hitch, I was not prepared for the kind of creative thrill it has been ever since,” Ram V said. “This story is going to expand and push the symbiote narrative and lore in even more unexpected and fantastic directions. It is also an utter thrill having the sort of call and response mechanic I’ve had with a writer like Al and an artist of Bryan’s caliber. Fans and new readers, strap in—you ain’t seen nothin’ yet.”

Over the last few years, Al Ewing has gotten the best reviews of his career with the Eisner-nominated horror-tinged Immortal Hulk. On Comic Book Roundup, Ram V’s run of Swamp Thing has an average review of 8.9 out of 10. Both Ram V and Al Ewing contributed separate stories to April’s Carnage: Black, White & Blood #2. There is some speculation that this take of Venom will be horror-influenced, although one of the initial promotional images is more cosmic.

Bryan Hitch probably needs no introduction, considering his work on Stormwatch, The Batman’s Grave & The Authority with Warren Ellis, The Ultimates (the basis for the MCU take on the Avengers) and Fantastic Four with Mark Millar, and multiple Justice League adventures.

Outgoing Venom writer Don Cates will be taking over the Hulk, along with former Amazing Spider-Man artist Ryan Ottley. Cates and Ewing left their marks on Venom and Hulk in best-selling years-long runs. Cates provided a mythos for Venom outside of the Spider-Man comics (although there were multiple Spider-Man crossovers) while Ewing explored the body horror of the Hulk. Both writers left big shoes to fill, so the swap is appropriate.

There will be a prelude to the Venom run in August’s Avengers Free Comic Book Day special. The first issue will be out in comic book stores in November.

  1. Definitely Eddie. Flash is back as anti venom and I don’t think marvel would change that now

  2. I just want to know who will be under the symbiote Eddie or Flash?
I’m not a huge flash fan.

  3. @Aqu@: You are too kind good sir!
Just as you are worried about Cates ignoring stuff on Hulk, I’m a little worried about a few things from Cates’ run on Venom not carrying over into Ewig’s run (most notably Dylan); kinda like how some things from Costa’s run where either downplayed (looking at you Sleeper) or ignored (like the poisons) . However we will have to wait for Venom 200 to see where this goes first and foremost !

  4. Yep, it’s great news and I’m looking forward to read it… and Sthenurus’s reviews. 😀

On the other hand, I fear Cates on Hulk will ignore most of the good Ewing brought to the character. Luckily I have never been a fan of the Hulk, I just liked Ewing’s take.

  5. YES!!! immortal hulk has been great so far, and Venom would definitely fit a more horror theme… Especially now that he is the new king in black.

It’ll be phenomenal and I’m looking forward to reviewing it!
