@hornacek — Thank you. I’m glad to know I wasn’t the only one. I had completely forgotten about their close relationship in Sins Past, but — well, that’s just because I’ve tried to forget all of Sins Past.
I love these early insights into their evolving relationship, Peter not really understanding yet why MJ was always so intensely flirtatious with him, who he’s letting into his head rent free even as he goes to collect his silver age medal.
@Evan – Yeah, I saw that “my best friend” line and was surprised by it too. But this seems to be a retcon that started years after Gwen’s death – I’m not sure when it started. The biggest example I can think of is Sins Past, where suddenly Gwen and MJ were best friends and so close that Gwen felt comfortable enough to tell her about being pregnant with Norman’s babies. Was Spider-Man Blue another example? Not sure if Loeb changed the flashbacks so that Gwen & MJ were friends and not rivals.
If you actually read the issues with Gwen and MJ in them, they definitely do not act like best friends, or friends at all.
In Issue 60, I was struck by Mary Jane’s referring to Gwen as her best friend. Perhaps I should have, but I never knew that she considered her her best friend or held her in such high esteem. It’s panels like this, I guess, that made me think that they weren’t that close.
