Spidey Memories#70

In the past I’ve tried to avoid some Peter/MJ heavy selections for “Spidey Memories” so we’d avoid a “marriage flame war”. With all the OMIT talk I figured it’s time to give the people what they want. So here begins a week of Peter/MJ heavy “Spidey Memories”.

This one is from “Amazing Spider-Man” issue 149 and is a much cited scene. It’s the conclusion of an emotional journey of Peter’s where he moves past the memory of Gwen (albeit through her clone) and is ready to start a relationship with MJ. Some speculate that this panel has them starting an “adult relationship”.

  1. I’m so excited to see that you Bertone, decided to use this as your first reflection of Peter & MJ’s single ship. I happen to had use this very photo as well in my blog spot posting entitled “What ever had happen to Peter Parker’s LOST kid? part one. I have to say also that since Quesada ended the marriage of them back in (people say 2008 but I truly believe it was in the last few months of 2007) but at least in someway he wants the marriage to continue or why would Marvel be so eager to keep releasing Spider-Girl even though they keep canceling it from time to time. So Marvel knows what fans want but still forces what they want us to believe is the true Spider-Man and that is just plain sad.

  2. I really like this moment in their relationship. On the flip side, it was a revelation to me at one point to learn that the Peter/MJ relationship didn’t grow steadily over time from the face-eating flower to the wedding. In fact, it was completely taken off the table for quite a while. I wonder what was the authorial/editorial impetus for bringing them back together in the 80s.

  3. @Bertone- yeah, I remember that distinctly. I read that in a TPB when I was young and for a long time, I was convinced that that was TRUE. Sometimes I still get myself mixed up, to be honest. I didn’t realize Conway was so “all over the place with it”, but I’ll have to re-read more of his stories and see how bad he was with it…

  4. “Blatant misuse of the spider sense, but whatever…”

Gerry Conway was notorious for that. Just the last issue we had Professor Warren sneak attack him saying “I was able to do it because your spider sense doesn’t warn you about your friends”.
