When I heard that Marvel was starting up the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series I knew this was not good news for the outstanding Spectacular Spider-Man series. Spectacular Producer Greg Weisman and Spider-Man voice actor Josh Keaton have been great friends to me and this website. We’ve talked several times over the last few years. I sent them an e-mail yesterday and they got right back to me. Here is a cut and paste of those e-mails.
BD: “Greg, I’m sure you’re getting bombarded with e-mails, but I just wanted to see if you’ve heard anything about Spectacular now that Ultimate Spider-Man has been announced? Will you have any involvement in it? Is this a sure sign the show is officially done? Several of my website visitors have written Marvel in the past months asking for Spec to continue and I hope there is a way to get your crew involved in this new show.”
Greg Weisman: I’ve heard nothing directly from Marvel, but I think the Ultimate Spider-Man announcement makes it fairly clear that Spectacular is over.
BD: “Josh, I know you said a while back that the actor is always the last person to know, but have you heard anything about Spec Spidey? Does the announcement of the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon mean that Spec is officially done? Also is there any chance you could get the gig voicing him in this new project? Are you auditioning? If I can help you in anyway with promotion or anything let me know.”
Josh Keaton: “Although they haven’t said anything to us, that announcement pretty much seals the deal. There is a chance I could voice Spidey but I will most likely have to go through the audition/casting process again. Hopefully some of the same people (producers, show runners, voice directors) come on board to make getting that part a little easier. As for promotion, I’m not sure. Continuously bomb DXD and Marvel’s twitter page with we want Josh Keaton? LoL. I’ll try and think of something. Thanks so much for your continued support. If I get any new info about anything Spidey, you’ll be among the first to know.”
This is a sad day for me and my 4 year old. I just want to say thanks to Greg, Victor, and Josh for the greatest Spidey adaptation thus far. As a 40 something Spidey fan I had real reservations about Spectacular until I sat down and watched the entire first season, needless to say I was hooked. I love how it borrowed from the Lee/ Ditko/ Romita era and blended that universe seemlessly into elements from the movie and ultimate. You could tell these guys have a a real love for the character and thats rare in today’s business. These 26 episodes will be the the standard all other Spidey ‘toons will be judged. Viva’ la SSM!!!
Spectacular Spider-man was an excellent show, and will be missed. Hopefully, Ultimate will be as good or better. What would be really nice is for Spider-Man to get the Animated PG-13 Direct to Video treatment, like Hulk and the Avengers!
I do want to point out that most shows aren’t “officially” cancelled, they just kind of stop. This also happened to the MTV Spider-Man series, so as much as I’m unhappy about this situation, its not uncommon for the crew involved not to be informed.
… did I tell you to come to this comments section? Don’t you have a cat-burglar to bone or something?
SSM was the only thing I love about Spidey right now. If it truly is gone, it was over far far too soon. My thanks to all who worked on the show, making something both myself and my kids could greatly enjoy together!
Sorry the fans are upset for the lost of my show. Ultimate Spider-Man Cartoon is the best way to get everybody ready for the Reboot Spider-Man Movie in 2012. Nuff Said!
Sorry the fans are upset for the lost of my show, but the show must go on… Ultimate Spider-Man Cartoon is the best way to get everybody ready for the Reboot Spider-Man Movie in 2012. Nuff Said!
I’m really ticked that SSM has been “unofficially” cancelled. The way Greg and Josh have been treated during this matter is deplorable. I guess sometimes businessmen forget that even the creators of cartoons are fans – but more importantly, are people too. Show some class.
This entire thing has been a real shame, from the cloak-and-dagger (stress on the dagger part) deals to Brevoort’s slaps at the fans. I wish these guys the best.
Seriously, do these people ever listen or read what the fans want? fans=your customers.
Looks like their hopes of prepping you guys for the “Ultimate” movie reboot don’t seem to be panning out.
^You would be right..at least that’s how I feel.
This stinks! These are two guys in the business that I wish all the best for. Let’s just say I don’t think Spidey fans have been this displeased since the marriage ended…just sayin’.
A sad day for Spidey. His greatest TV interpretaion ended so quickly. All I know is if the same people who work on the other Marvel shows (SHS, IM:AA) are involved in the new Ultimate Spider-Man show, it will suck so bad.
They certainly have more of my support than this new show probably ever will.
I really hope these guys land something Spidey in the future.
Let’s get some DC-like direct to video releases by these guys.
C’mon Marvel do SOMETHING right!
Honestly this hurts my soul to think that people who love spidey as much as we do and did a quality job to get spidey to us in such an imaginative way would not even get the courtesy of being told they are cancelled. I can’t stand the way the business works sometimes I’ve been burned so many times i can’t imagine how Greg and Josh feel I just hope they know that they had my support from day 1 and I look forward to their future ventures animi certain my fellow crawl spacers feel the same
This sucks so much.
