Ultimate Spider-Man Cartoon Preview Image and Breevort Comments

Marvel  has released a promo image for it’s new Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon. The future of Spectacular Spider-Man seems to be in doubt. I have e-mails sent to actor Josh Keaton and producer Greg Weisman to see if they have heard anything. It’d be awesome if those two were involved in the new show.
Marvel editor Tom Breevort is fielding questions about the new cartoon. However, he doesn’t seem too upset about the end of Spectacular Spider-Man based on his answers.  Here are a few quotes from his foamspring account.

Breevort: Yes, there’s a new Ultimate Spider-Man animated series on the way.

Why should we care about this new show when Spectacular was so amazingly better than what you will put out there?

Breevort: It’s nice of you to keep an open mind and look at the thing before you judge it. You remind me of all of teh animated Batman fans who were outraged when Brave and the Bold was announced, most of whom have come around to really loving it. A new show doesn’t somehow mean a censure of teh old show–it’s just a new show! And it’ll be good or bad on its own merits. But it might be better than you think.

Do you feel it unfair that we loose a TERRIFIC show just so you can have team ups? Would it be that bad to leave Spectacular alone and have both shows?

Breevort: No, I don’t think it’s unfair. It’s really amazing, the sense of entitlement some fans have. We did that show, it ran its course, and now it’s done, like so many other things. And given the tremendous cost to mount a production like that, and the limited return on doing so going forwards, we’re putting our efforts now into the next thing. It’s absurd to think that we’d keep producing two competing shows about the same character at the same time. Who does that?

  1. I AM REAL EXCITED ABOUT THIS. SO-LONG SPECTACULAR U HAD A DECENT RUN BUT NOW ITS TIME FOR ULTIMATE TO SHOW EVERYONE WHAT SPIDER-MAN IS ALL ABOUT!

  2. AW THAT DOES IT! At first I was like “maybe this is all for the best. Maybe Marvel is going to take the spectacular spider-man formula and reinvent it in more ways than one..” But after reading Brevoort’s reply; this is an official SLAP to all faces of spectacular spider-man fans!!

The LEAST Brevoort could have done: be APOLOGETIC to the fans and sympathize with the abrupt end of the series.. BUT NOO!! He goes on saying how we should not judge the new show, how to “look-forward-to-our-next-cartoon” and forget about the bastard child (the spectacular spider-man) that all fans love!

This officially concludes that Marvel doesn’t care about the spectacular spider-man and is only after imitating the BRAVE AND THE BOLD to copy DC’s success. So from now on, I’m gonna boycott buying Marvel comics and read the comics online instead… for FREE!! Take that Marvel, you earned it!!

  3. God, I’m so sick of Brevoort’s way of communicating with the fans. If this prick (please excuse the language) eventually becomes EIC after Quesada leaves (as one could assume he’s definitely in line for the job), I’ll boycott Marvel, cause he treats the fans like shit. I know he needs to tow the company line, but seriously, be a bit nicer about it. (And note, this is not just about his responses in regards to this new series)

I get why they’re making a new series, honestly, I do. But did Marvel seriously not expect the backlash? The series has gotten almost unanimous praise by everyone unless its one of those “ZMOG I KANT TAKEZ TEH ANEEMAYS DESIGNS!!!!!!”, and a few more legitimate criticisms.

I feel really bad for the Spec cast and crew, especially for Mr. Weisman, having another excellent series cut down in its prime.

  4. … BTW, I’m all for “wait and see…” but after Fantastic Four, Super Hero Squad, and Iron Man: Armored Adventures, can you blame anyone for being skeptical?

…but of course, they’ll get enough new viewers behind it to justify it’s existence. Kind of like Revenge of the Fallen…

  5. oh God
    I am so depressed
    this totally sucks
they dont care about spidey they just want to have team-ups between spidey and the superheroes they have total control over like the Hulk, iron man and Thor i.e the lucrative ones (the ones Marvel is developing as live action movies) so that they will become more popular by appearing alongside spidey
    oh God i hate Marvel
they treated Spectacular spider-man like a bastard child since the very beginning and never did anything to prmote the show casue it was Sony’s show but now that they have the rights to spider-man aniamtion back tehy are trying to milk him to prmotr their “profitable” properties.
    damn you

  6. I love the interviewer. “NOTHING YOU CREATE WILL BE BETTER THAN SPEC SPIDEY!? Why was a super fantastic awesome show canceled in favor of ultimate spiderman!? HUH HUH !?” lol

  7. i will watch this show, i still think they should resolve Spectacular Spiderman, that was a great Spiderman show, it was one of my favorite Spiderman Series.

  8. Allow me to be the voice of reason here. Tom is of coarse toll the company line. untill they absolutly say there will never be another spectacular spiderman episode. I won’t believe it.

  9. You Wanna Know What’s BUUUUULLLShit!!This show taking out Spectacular Spider-man.I’m fucking pissed that Marvel’s half-assed ball brained Animation staff would wanted to end something before it got really good.I was a firm believer of Spectacular Spidey.I wasn’t a big fan of the villians redesigns but they were appealing to modern age version Spidey’s rogues gallery.Just like they they did in the ’94 animated series. With the exception of how the 94 series did Electro….He was NEVER the son of the Red Skull.Spectacular was just establishing the Gwen/Peter relationship and fully fleshing out the characters instead of making them 2d and one sided. But I digress.I was never the biggest fan of most of Ultimate Spider-man villians…only one…no tw-three characters:Green Goblin,Hobgoblin, and Demogoblin. They are not fucking giant hulk rip-offs.When I think of Green Goblin I think of a crazed megalomaniac trying to get rid of Spider-man or trying to get Spider-man to join him.Just basicly making Spidey’s life a living hell.I don’t want to see that in this series.I hate how they are killing this series while it’s in it’s prime.I loved the series finale just learning that Norman was and has been the Goblin the whole time and framing his son was just completely and brutaly ruthless. He saw his demise…apparently and we see Norman incognito at the end of the episode.I fucking love that. What I don’t love is being fucking left on a cliffhanger like that thinking ‘What’s happening next?’.Marvel You never fucking end a Spider-man series like that. It’s just like the end of the ’94 series,Madme Web takes Spider-man to find Mary Jane…The real one.Not some fucking Water Clone Bullshit! You would think Omg Spidey is going to be with MJ finally.Nope We get Spider-man Unlimited and Mary Jane and Peter areback and married with no fucking Explanation.
And How dare Breevort Compare Spectacular and Marvel animation to Fucking DC.I loved Batman:the animated series and I was very Skeptical to The Batman and Batman:The Brave and The Bold.I does Joker have Dreadlocks and boycott wearing shoes like a decent Psycho. But Batman:TAS is almost Two decades old while Spectacular is only two almost Three Years Old.That’s a big fucking difference.
Quesasda and his have to stop with the Spider-damage from the comics to the movies and cartoons,Spidey has been Raped in every from of media.Stop the Spider-rapage,God Damn it.

  10. I don’t like to judge people just based on reading postings from the internet (since writing can’t convey tone of voice, really), but Tom Brevoort comes off as a little mean, somewhat haughty, and a bit irritated. If he doesn’t want to comment on something (like the question about the sales), he can just say he doesn’t want to comment; he doesn’t need to say that the fans and customers don’t deserve/warrant that kind of information. Again, maybe it’s just me…

  11. shit!
i just heard the news . i cant believe they canceled my beloved Spectacular with this shit
today is the worst day of my life

  12. Personally I think that Weisman is much more intelligent than Marvel’s usual cartoon staff of Kyle, Yost and Rollman. He’s even a better story crafter than Bendis is. He did look at the Ultimate comics and took aspects from it but his primary focus was Lee / Ditko / Romita Sr.

If this cartoon turns out like either Iron Man Armored Adventures or Wolverine And The X-Men I am very worried. Suffice it to say Marvel’s current cartoon staff’s view of Marvel does not match my own, while Weisman was much closer even with a re-interpretation. However I did enjoy Planet Hulk which was more of a straight up adaptation (I don’t know why Hulk has red eyes in it though, so again another bumbling Marvel cartoon staff decision). Still if an Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon lacks the wealth, knowledge and understanding of Spider-Man lore (see Wolverine And The X-Men along with Iron Man Armored Adventures) it’s not going to measure up.

I honestly don’t see them making a better cartoon. It will be nice to see Bagley’s designs in motion I suppose but that’s about it. Hopefully they will get some really creative people behind the staff. It would be nice if Weisman was involved but I really doubt it. This is the second time Disney burned him afterall (Gargoyles).

Brevoort’s always been a douche bag that will say whatever he has to and go along with whatever an EIC says (and in this case the powers that be) so long as he keeps his job. It’s how he’s stayed at Marvel for so long.

  13. This is just ridiculous.

I wrote about this on my Facebook, but I’ll repost it here:

The fact is, those behind Spectacular Spidey weren’t even told they were cancelled, this show was just announced and by proxy Spec Spidey was considered done–BIG slap in the face. What I think? It was done for reasons: so they could have more team-ups a la Batman: Brave and the Bold (Weisman wanted to do a Spider-Man show, not a Marvel team-up show) and because they want to have their own Spider-Man property, not associated with Sony.

In the interview Breevort adds insult to injury, and tries to compare Marvel’s cartoons to DCAU–which doesn’t work, considering DCAU has actually had more than two successful cartoons since the early 90s. Not only that, but Batman: TAS and Brave and the Bold have almost TWO DECADES between them, AND TAS wasn’t CANCELLED IN FAVOR OF BRAVE AND THE BOLD. So comparing them is not only ludicrous, it’s a huge slap in the face.

Marvel is pissed that, even though their movies have been better in the last 10 years, DC still has them beat in quality TV. But instead of continuing the well-established, well-recieved, and acclaimed show they already have, they want to copy DC’s Brave and the Bold by doing team-ups, and “reboot” the TV franchise like they are “rebooting” the movies.

    It’s so disgusting.

  14. I hope that Josh Keaton, Greg Weisman and the whole cast are part of the new show but you couldn’t blame them if they didn’t after the way SSM was handled.

  15. For all: “teh” = “the”…in case you were confused…

So the way he’s talking, it seems as if USM is going to be a team-up a week…why is that necessary? Why can’t it be about Spidey and his villains? I’m sad to see Gwen go in SSM…she was definitely one of the highlights. I’m still confused as to how the company would cut SSM so quickly. :/

  16. @ Enigma2099: I wholeheartedly agree. “Batman: The Animated Series” and “Spectacular Spider-Man” shared many things:

    1) Animation: I hate to admit it, but I was one of the skeptics (as far as animation style was concerned) when BTAS came out. Likewise with SSM. Fortunately, after seeing the errors of my ways when I FREAKING LOVED BTAS, I decided to give SSM a shot. Now, I consider both of them to be essential viewing!

    2) Characterization: Both series perfectly captured the feel of the characters and their world. BTAS was dark, gritty, and very grim (Any who would claim that BTAS was too “kid-friendly”, I would direct your attention to “I Am The Night”, an episode in which Com. Gordon is shot (They SAY “wounded in the line of duty”, but still…) It’s one of my all-time favorites!) On the other hand, SSM was almost always been very fun, fast-moving, and true to Spidey’s character. Brilliant!

    3) Voices: Both series had a spectacular (no pun intended) cast. Part of the reason I loved Arkham Asylum was that the cast of BTAS actually did the voices! The same goes with Spidey…for a long time to come, I will hear Josh Keaton as the perfect Spider-voice!

    4) Unnecessary Revisions: Unfortunately, when BTAS left Fox, they changed nearly everything I loved about it. The art, direction, and even some of the voices were changed, to satisfy the studio, and left a bad taste in my mouth, from which I never recovered. I have a VERY bad feeling of deja-vu about the “Ultimate Spider-Man” revision. If it ain’t broke, *cough-Quesada-cough*, don’t try to fix it!

    ‘Nuff Said!

  17. You know I used to like breevort but this interview comes off as pompous I really want to like this USM cartoon I don’t want to judge it before it comes out but this interview is making not care about it

  18. “Breevort: It’s nice of you to keep an open mind and look at the thing before you judge it. You remind me of all of teh animated Batman fans who were outraged when Brave and the Bold was announced, most of whom have come around to really loving it.”

Well, I can say with all honesty that I SURE AS HELL WASN’T ONE OF THEM. I F****** HATE THAT SHOW!!!! I just can’t accept anything less after Batman: TAS

  19. @ 666andahalf and BD: I agree. His tone seems to indicate his preference for running with the Ultimate Spider-Man show with little care for Spectacular Spider-Man while neverminding the voiced opinions of the fans. That ticks me off. And a big issue with this move on Marvel and Disney’s part is how little Ultimate Spider-Man may deviate from Spectacular. What’s the point? And judging from the chats with Weisman and co., they had a good fix on Spidey and the direction with the series.

  20. “We did that show, it ran its course, and now it’s done, like so many other things.”

By “ran its course”, you mean canceled before it could really establish itself and take off, then yes.

“And given the tremendous cost to mount a production like that, and the limited return on doing so going forwards, we’re putting our efforts now into the next thing.”

By who’s accounting? Won’t it cost much more to recruit and hire talent, acquire a new animation studios, spend more marking to promote a brand new product, rather than build up an established one?

“It’s absurd to think that we’d keep producing two competing shows about the same character at the same time. Who does that?”

No one said they want both shows. I think I’ve heard nothing but a resounding voice for ONE show: “Spectacular Spider-Man”.
