Is Spider-Man 2 to Be Released for the PS5? The Power of Gaming and Bingo Promotions

Online rumors suggest that Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 game could be exclusively released on the PlayStation 5. While nothing official has been confirmed yet, it looks possible that this title could be on sale by the end of 2021.

What Do We Know About Spider-Man 2 So Far?

This would be a follow-up to the hugely successful Spider-Man game that was made available on the PS4 in 2018. Developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony, it quickly became the fastest-selling game in various part of the world and by mid-2019 had sold over 13 million copies.

The PS5 console is set for release by the end of 2020. The line-up of confirmed PS5 games is expected to include the likes of Godfall, Outriders, and Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Some sources also place a new Spider-Man title on this list.

Several sites have carried reports of supposed leaks, but it isn’t clear whether any of them is to be believed. Some sources say that Miles Morales will play a big part in the story, with one suggestion being that you could switch between playing him and Peter Parker.

The powerful new PS5 console should allow greater freedom for players to explore the world around them. It seems that this could include entering buildings and exploring them using new game mechanics. It is also noted that the first game ended on a cliff-hanger. This is another reason why a follow-up title appears to make perfect sense.

How Could It Help the PS5 to More Success?

The popularity of the original Spider-Man game on the PS4 showed us how this character could give a boost to sales of the console. It seems likely that decision-makers at Sony are keen to launch another game with this level of success.

It is worth remembering that the PlayStation is up against the Xbox Series X. According to Tom’s Guide, this device will also be released in time for the 2020 holidays.  Microsoft has given out details of some specifications and games, showing that it will be a tough battle between the two new consoles. Spider-Man 2 could work well as a promotional tool for the PS5. Since it is only going to be available on the Sony console, it will give players an extra reason to choose it over the rival from Microsoft.

This type of promotional tool has worked well in other industries, as it encourages people to make an easier decision on something that promises to bring them a lot of pleasure. The original Spider-Man game certainly helped plenty of people to make the decision to buy a PS4. A good example of how this works comes from the world of online bingo. If we look at some bingo promotions online from Paddy Power, we can see the likes of free spins, newbie rooms, and boosted prizes all on offer. These attractive deals are aimed at helping people to get started. With numerous bingo options to choose from, deals like this are essential in showing players which site best suits their needs and rewards them for joining up.

In the same way, Spider-Man 2 could be the title that helps gamers to make up their mind on which console to buy.

  1. @hornacek — Yeah, you’re right — Curiosity got the best of me, too, so far as PS4 Spider-man was concerned, because I had no intention of buying it. Incidentally, when I was a kid I played video games all the time, because I had an interest in animation: I was the one who the neighbors came over to see beat games that they thought were impossible. But around the time PS1 came out, I decided to put down the controller and started reading books instead. Every once and a while, though, when a truly remarkable game comes out, it sure is tempting. The PS4 game is something I think we, as fans, have always wanted. It reminds me of the first time I saw the Sam Raimi Spider-man film in theatres. The scene when Peter was webswinging over those trucks to pursue Uncle Ben’s killer brought tears to my eyes, because I had never seen any kind of live action Spider-man like that before. I got the same feeling when I saw footage of the PS4 game. (Someone at work brought it to my attention, so it was kind of embarrassing at the time.) I think if I were to ever play it, I’d bawl all over the place. (I’m exaggerating, but you know what I mean.)

  2. @Evan – When the PS4 game was released I had no intention of playing it, so while I didn’t see out any spoilers, I didn’t hide from them either. The podcast episode here was the first time I heard of any story beats or spoilers, and I listened to it thinking “I’m not going to buy the game so I might as well get the summary from them.” – similar to the Superior Spider-Man series (which I didn’t buy, but still wanted to know what was happening).

Of course with the sequel game it’s a totally different story, and I’ll be actively avoiding spoilers until I buy the game, whenever that will be. Depending on what time of year the PS5 game is released, I may once again have to wait for a Black Friday sale to buy the game and new playstation.

  3. @Hornacek — As big a fan of Spider-man as I know you to be, I think the only way for you to avoid spoilers for the PS5 Spider-man is to be one of the first to purchase it, and then lock yourself in a room until you finish it — though I have to admit that the Crawlspace would mourn your absence in the meantime. I’m sure it won’t be a repeat of the Fisk fiasco! Apart from curiosity and interest, of course, one of the main reasons I think I want to learn as much as I can (even at the risk of spoilers) is because of the feeling of camaraderie and excitement I feel when I get to see the same joy in other people.

  4. @Evan – I can honestly say that it was the 3-hour (?) review episode of the game here, plus Stella’s review on BTO, that convinced me to buy a PS4 so I could play this game. I died *so* many times fighting Fisk that I literally thought I had made a huge mistake and that I had wasted my money buying a gaming system for one game which I could not get through the first mission. Luckily, I persisted and prevailed.

I really wish a company actually existed like Lacuna (in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) that could erase targeted memories so I could play this game for the first time without knowing the story and all the spoilers. I still greatly enjoyed the game the first time I played it (and every subsequent time), but I wish I could have played it without knowing the major story beats (plus the ending).

  5. @Hornacek — I agree with you completely. First I need to buy a tv, then a PS5. I watched through a playthrough of the PS4 game (twice!), and I love it without ever even having actually played it with my own hands. I just want to swing around and test the physics.

  6. As someone who never owned a gaming console before this game, and bought the PS4 just to play this game (thank goodness for Black Friday sales), I am sure I will be buying the PS5 just so that I can play the sequel game.

Sony, just shut up and take my money!

  7. I suspect that the game shall debut in 2022. Partially due to to the virus stalling production but also because that would be Spider-Man’s 60th anniversary and that could play into the promotion of the game.
