This panel taken out of context is misleading. After this moment, MJ talks to Peter and he finally tells her why he became Spider-Man, i.e. letting Uncle Ben down. In fact for this issue, they actually reprinted AF#15 fully in the pages right after this, the first time it’s been done (the usual strategy before was to redraw the origin which Romita Sr. had done, Pollard-Wolfman had done and so on).

Peter being way too emo and melodramatic for my liking here. Nice guilt trip you’re laying there, Pete.
I love this era of Spidey, but there’s some ridiculous moments that make me shake my head a bit in retrospect.
