Now we finally know. After a couple of weeks (or months, if you look at the rumors that started last year) Dan “I’ll only leave if they fire me!” Slott has confirmed with Vulture.com that he is in fact leaving Amazing Spider-Man with issue #801 and departing for Iron Man.
From Vulture:
VULTURE: I never thought I’d see you walking away from Spider-Man. Was this a hard decision to make?
SLOTT: This was a decision that was made way long ago. I gotta feel like a jerk, because whenever someone would interview me, or whenever it would come up on panels, I would look out at people and say with a stern look that I was never leaving. Very much in the same way I was saying, “Peter Parker is never coming back. I killed him” [during The Superior Spider-Man]. I lied. I lied horribly. [Laughs.] But that’s what us storytellers do, we spin lies.
No official word yet on who is replacing Slott on Amazing Spider-Man. When the “Slott is leaving” rumors began last year, it was also whispered that Nick Spencer would be replacing him. We’ll see.

They should’ve put him on a Superior SlOtto book after Superior (the character he really wanted to write) and have put someone else on ASM back in 2013. I don’t think the world would be anymore poorer for not having what he did since then, it was a lot of tripe, frankly.
I don’t hesitate to call him the worst Spider-Man writer ever to have a long run. He’s awful. Good riddance. Guess they finally did have to fire him!
I really think this will be good for both the Spider-Man comic book as well as for Dan Slott. I personally wasn’t the biggest fan of his but I did enjoy some of his other stuff at Marvel. So I’m interested on his take for Iron-Man.
As far as ASM I hope we will get a more back to basics book from the new writer, whoever it may be.
I have mixed feelings about this news.
I think Slott had some great ideas, but sometimes the execution didn’t seem right, or the conclusion would be disappointing.
Towards the end, I kind of thought it may be better if Marvel had given him a “renew your vows” style book, set in another universe, where he could have had Peter as billionaire CEO of Parker Industries, etc. (although I did enjoy that direction for the book, I do think maybe it could have been better set in an alternative universe) and had another writer handle the main Marvel universe book.
I wish him well, and look forward to seeing how he concludes his run, and who takes over! 🙂
His reason for leaving is incredible. He desperately wanted to be #1. His next personal milestone was “Write more Spider-Man comics than anyone else”, which then basically morphed into “Write more Spider-Man comics than Bendis.”
And he just couldn’t beat him. It’s like Zeno’s Paradox of Achilles and the Tortoise; always catching up and closing the distance, but never really meeting up with Bendis.
In the end, Slott just… gave up. And I think that’s the most cathartic way to be rid of him. Not fired, or anything like that. Just his decision, to feel like he wouldn’t win.
Fare thee well, Dan Slott. May the door not hit you on the way out.

Two things…
One: If the Mephisto thing isn’t addressed, then there’s no point to bringing the marriage back.
Two: Slott’s going to Iron Man… but Mary jane’s over there… oh no.
@Joshua Nelson
Agree on both counts. Superior was a natural jumping off point for Slott, and most of his worst stuff since post-BND was after the relaunch of ASM. Excited to see some fresh blood on the book.
I’m hoping for outside odds and letting Ta-Nehisi Coates take over. The guy’s a massive Spidey fan (and of the marriage, to boot) and he’d be able to bring a fresh perspective. He’s been doing some great work on Black Panther, too, IMO.
Also, for the first time in ten years, I feel myself smiling again as a Spider-Man fan.
A moment of silence for the upcoming removal of one of the worst Spider-Man writers of all time.
All joking aside, this is long overdue. I still say that Slott should have stepped down after SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN ended.
Change is always good. Let’s hope for the best.
Just thinking (not something I do often, so somebody double check my facts) – He said this was something that was planned a long time ago, but if he is taking over for Bendis, it couldn’t have been planned that long ago, could it? I doubt DC hired Bendis and then let him work several more months before they announced anything with nobody leaking it. I guess the move off the title could have been planned long ago, but the move to Iron Man was a switch in direction.
Either way, I don’t care. Just thinking.
Even people who liked the majority of Slott’s run must be happy about this, he’s become such a tiresome writer and he should have left years ago. I really hope Marvel is willing to take a risk with who they pick for the title next, I think we’re ready for an interesting new outlook on the character, hopefully one that’ll actually be compatible with Ditko and Lee’s vision.
God is Good.
OK, we’ve jumped out of the frying pan, let’s hope we land somewhere other than the fire!
We need term limits in comics…

For some reason I’m hearing the Wizard of Oz in my mind…”Ding Dong…”

Spencer WILL NOT be replacing Slott on ASM. Marvel wants to boost their flagship’s sales and, after the SECRET EMPIRE debacle, Spencer is simply too toxic for that book.
While I’m ecstatic at him FINALLY leaving, I am also worried, because if Mary Jane is still in Iron Man when he takes over, I’m scared of what he might do with her.
“But that’s what us storytellers do, we spin lies!” Unless you a CELEBRITY asks you TWICE and you come out with the truth to gain popular status. *eye roll*
Good Residence!
This is a very nice thing to wake up to.
I’ve never been so glad to be wrong, and thrilled that Amazing Spider-Man fans are free of him. Never thought we’d be lucky enough to see this day.
If Spencer replaces him… we’ll have to see which Spencer we get. The “Happy Go Lucky Superior Foes” Spencer or the “WOKE AS F-CK!! CAP’S A NAZI!” Spencer.
YES!!!!! Anyone has to be better than Slott. Maybe we can get back to the Spider-Man I enjoyed reading in the 90s.
