Catch-up is my favorite game. I always seem to play it.
Sorry for the delay on the reviews, gang.
NEW AVENGERS #58
WRITER: Brian Michael Bendis
ARTIST: Stuart Immonen
INKS: Wade von Grawbadger
COLOURS: Dave McCaig
LETTERS: Albert Deschesne
PLOT:
Luke Cage surrenders himself to the Dark Avengers and the Night Nurse sends evidence to Ben Urich, proving her innocence to H.A.M.M.E.R.. Warbird makes a quick getaway to distract the iron Patriot and the rest of the New Avengers escape through the sewers. With no leadership, the Dark Avengers rush into the sewers and get beaten. Seems to be happening a lot these days.
The Hood gets back with his new Asgardian powers and finds out about Dr. Harrow’s betrayal.
Jessica Jones talks to her mother about how she’s raising her child. On the run from the law and all that jazz. Then the New Avengers show up and try to explain the Cage situation…Doesn’t really go well.
Osborn gets Jonas Harrow and his power drainer down to the Helicarrier pronto, so they can operate on Luke Cage. He has much he can do for Osborn…
LIKES:
-The art…again.
-Good writing, with much is put into this issue.
DISLIKES:
-This issue feels very much like the last one, and the issue before that.
THOUGHTS:
This issue had a decent amount of plot. We had the escape, the fight, and the aftermath. Touched on a few smaller plots. Then why do I feel so empty? These last few issue have felt very similar. This isn’t the first time they’ve escaped in the “Power Drainer” arc. Remember the issue with Mockingbird and the Quinjet? Uh huh. There can only be so many escapes before I start to not care. And Osborn got beat up again.
I’m hoping we see something different next issue. A little bit more edgy, more original. Technically, there’s nothing wrong with this issue. There’s not much new to say about this issue that I haven’t said about other recent issues of New Avengers. Maybe I should be congratulating this series’ consistency? Maybe later.
The art as always was great by Mr. Immonen. I’m hoping he stays on for a long time to come, as lack of consistency in the art was one of the reasons New Avengers used to bug me.
FAVOURITE QUOTE:
“Everyone back! This man is hurt!”
“Oh, @#$% him, Ares! Where are the other Avengers?”
OVERALL:
2.5 out of 5 webheads.
Well, erm…yeah. Think I’ve said all I can on this issue.
Tracking Device. Bomb. Microphone.
S’all good.
Why do I get the feeling they’re gonna plant a tracking device inside Cage?
Hmmm. I liked this one a lot better. It was the first time we really saw the New Avengers and the Dark Avengers go at it for an extended period, and the fight had a lot of cool moments, like Bucky versus Ares. Also, Osborn sadistically using his repulsor glove as a shock paddle on Cage to keep him alive but still in agony was great. Bendis writes a fun and pitch perfect Norman; he always has. These last few issues of New Avengers with the Immonen art have been very good. I think this is my favorite NA arc since the first one.
