Pascal Says Venom and Black Cat/Silver Sable Movies in MCU, Feige Looks Confused

1. UPDATE!

   Looks like Amy got a “talking to”. She “clarified” her statement. Seems to me her plans failed when trying to make these spin off movies “adjunct” to the MCU on camera. Read the article from SupherheroHype.Com

   “Amy Pascal clarified her remarks from last week where she referred to Sony’s Venom and Silver Sable/Black Cat spin-offs as “adjunct” to Homecoming, saying:

   “Here’s what we’re doing: all these characters are a part of the Marvel comic book universe,” Pascal tells Comic Book. “In that universe, they are all related to each other. Kevin [Feige] makes characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. These characters are separate, except for Spidey, who belongs in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is why he’s there.”

   When asked if Venom would eventually crawl his way into the MCU, Feige uttered his famous: “We never say never.”

   I absolutely loved Iron Man 3. It is in fact my favourite Iron Man movie and the only one I rewatch often. And while Ultron was not as good as the first Avengers, I loved the hell out of it too. Especially when compared to the utterly joyless Superman vs Batman.

   So yes, of course, it is subjective, but the word “dud” to describe any of Marvel’s movies seems a HUGE stretch. You or anyone else may personally not like them. But the consensus has been that they were almost all great. The exceptions being Incredible Hulk (barely a real MCU movie. And Dark World, which I enjoyed but thought was weak).

   Even the so call “weakest” of them all have a positive consensus. Iron Man 2 (frequently cited as bad by some) got a 72% on rotten tomatoes. Iron Man 3 got a 79% and Age of Ultron a 75%. You add in the money they made and they are neither critical or commercial “duds”.

   As you say, subjectively you personally may not have enjoyed them. But I would still argue that calling them a “dud” is inaccurate and “trainwreck” is absurd IMO.

   As far as I am concerned the MCU has been incredibly consistently great. And it is the reason people keep coming back in droves to see these movies. The Marvel logo is now a seal of quality. So people come see characters they previously did not know because they have grown to love the shared universe and the consistent quality it has provided.

3. Lee Swain, I know its subjective, but Marvel has had some duds. I remember how lukewarm everyone was towards Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3 was a joke, and Age of Ultron was total meh…

4. Amy looks like she’s off her meds. She’s talking out of her ass and she knows it. Business tactic, to use an interview to “try’ (but failed) to seal another deal in stone. Kevin played this one smart. Just smile and look at the camera with thoughts in his head “No…just NO.”. “There’s a chance, there’s always a chance!’ Yeah there’s a chance that monkey’s may fly out of my butt, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen.

   Theory I happen to agree on. Marvel, sees this as an opportunity. They are producing a “Spider-Man” within the MCU, which seems to be or going to be the BEST SPIDEY FILM out there (die hard Spidey fans will say otherwise, I’m referring to the general public). It’s looking that way. So if (and I have not reason to doubt) that does happen, a sequel will be created and that will either give Marvel Studios enough power to actually buy the rights back with Disney backing their claim.

   They are throwing so much MCU in this movie and marketing via their golden boy Iron Man. This movie will be so big that people will want to see more of that therefore Marvel telling Sony. “People like our version better than yours, you’ll never be able to produce a better version than what we got.” So via this movie and marketing, it could be leading up to that.

   You know what else made a ton of money in the movie theater? The Transformers franchise.

   And that was funny. Feige just sitting there watching the drunk looking woman rant.

   Sony wants to be the remora of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

7. I’d really prefer that Marvel/Sony give Spider-Man more of a soft reboot. Put him in or after college and in the middle of fighting one of his foes. Maybe have Peter already dating M.J., or maybe he dated her previously and is trying to get back together with her. Then we’d get a more grown-up Spider-Man who fits his age in the last several decades of the comics (especially in relation to the other staple MCU characters) and viewers could decide that the film takes place after the Raimi or Webb films in their own head-canon, with some retcons, allowing us to avoid another origin or coming of age story.

   I know that Marvel has the inane idea that Spider-Man is all about youth (he’s not; he’s about responsibility), but do you know what the youth look up to? Adults. Do you know what they look forward to being? Adults. When I was a kid, do you know what I watched movies about? Adults. You don’t have to make Spider-Man a kid to attract kids. Batman sure ain’t a kid.

8. It sounds like all that Amy Pascal is saying is that Venom and Black & Silver take place in Sony’s Spider-Man universe which shares it’s eponymous character with the MCU. Is Homecoming really an MCU film? Or is it a Sony film that ties into the MCU? The creative direction of the film does not seem to respect Spider-Man or his origins as the MCU films tend to do for their characters, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s largely Sony making the important character decisions for Spider-Man.

   Well for *this* Dr. Strange fan – yeah, it was a trainwreck. Not financially but creatively.

10. I’m with George on Doc Strange, I was not a fan of that movie, very “blah”. The Sony Spider-Verse dumpster fire just refuses to go away. Even the MCU looks a bit scary for Spidey, Homecoming looks more and more like the Ultimate cartoon made into a movie. It’s been so long since Spider-Man 1 & 2, I’m starting to think we’ll never get a great Spidey movie again. We certainly don’t get great Spidey in the books. They are well before my time, but I tend to stick with the 60s-80s mostly in the comics. Modern Spidey is so bad. Well, that got off track a bit. Good day sirs.

11. I think the MCU have not had a dud yet. Loved every single movie since Iron Man 1. Loved Doctor Strange too, so did everyone else I know that saw it. So “trainwreck” seems a bit much 😉

    And I presume “Iron Man 4” is a swipe at SM:H? While I get the criticisms of too much reliance on Tony, I am open to seeing a slightly different take on young Spidey’s growth. While none of this happened to our Peter, I think it is in character for the high school Peter to admire Tony and want to be an Avenger (as he wanted to join the FF). Even taking help from him and accepting a powered up suit (which they are playing on the Iron Spider costume story from Civil War comics of course).

    It’s an amalgam of past Spidey comic story beats. But does not feel out of character for me. Far prefer this take to the ASM approach. Seems far more faithful. And no doubt Spidey will outgrow Tony in this movie too.

    Amy Pascal is clearly of the reservation here. It’s like she is losing her mind or something, just like a few months ago when she seemed to suggest Spidey would only be in the MCU for 2 movies, but we know he is contracted for 3 Spidey movies and at least 2 other MCU appearances.

    Sony or at least Amy Pascal seem to be determined to screw this MCU deal up. This Venom and Black Cat/Silver Sable movie are going to be awful, I just know it. Venom is so overrated to start with, you remove Spidey from the equation and I could not be less interested. Same for Black Cat TBH.

    I wish Sony’s movie division would just go under already so Disney can just buy them out and put Spidey at the core of the MCU, where he belongs.

13. Amy Pascal & Sony are desperate to leech themselves onto the greater glory and success of Marvel and the MCU. And Feige left the door open for her to do so. Now the MCU is, ostensibly, saddled with whatever else Sony comes up – and remembering their plans from their leaked emails, that’s a real shitstorm.

    I’d feel bad for Feige but after the trainwrecks of Doctor Strange and Iron Man 4… it’s hard to.
