Quesada Comments On New Costume

SMSR1Marvel Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada spoke with IGN about Spidey’s new costume.

No, not that laughable new one with the Green Lantern crap on Spidey’s chest. The new movie costume, which is most definitely not pictured here to the right. The former Editor-in-Chief of Marvel teased details of the twice-rebooted SonyDisneyMarvel Spider-Man costume:

“It looks awesome. I’ve seen a lot of design work that’s been done on the costume. I think there are elements of it that are really going to blow people away, where they are going to go ‘Ah, that’s Marvel doing Spider-Man.’… It’s Spider-Man. What’s not exciting about that? I can’t imagine there’s a person on planet Earth that can’t relate to some aspect of Spider-Man or Peter Parker, and he is for all intents and purposes, he is Marvel’s Mickey Mouse.”

I don’t recall Mickey Mouse ever making a deal with Disney’s equivalent of the Devil so Walt could write Minnie out of the picture, but I digress…

“He is that icon of so much of what we have was built upon, so to create that movie along with our Sony partners it’s phenomenally exciting. I know Kevin Feige and his team, they’ve some great ideas, some wonderful theories that we have all chimed in on. What’s funny about Spider-Man is that you sit there and you’re at a creative meeting and everybody goes ‘Well what about this? Yeah, of course! That’s what we should be doing, that’s Spider-Man!’ We all seem to be of the same mind about Spider-Man, because there are certain aspects of the character that are just iconic and have been perfect since the moment they were created.”

… all of which tells us next to nothing. We’ll know more when Marvel “leaks” it to USA Today or CNN.

  1. “There is a young kid [already] running around New York City in a homemade version of the Spider-Man costume in the MCU, you just don’t know it yet,“

Feige does refer to his suit as homemade in this quote, but Raimi’s Spider-man claimed to have made his costume himself and Webb tried to show Peter making his in ASM 1, so who knows what Feige actually means by that description…

They did have a cheesy Captain America stage costume so maybe there’s hope ;P.

Heck, it might even be fun to see the craftsmanship improve a bit in each film ;P.

  2. I hope we get an actual home-made costume this time! I liked the Raimi suit well enough and loved the ASM 2 suit, but none of them were something that a high school kid (who may or may not have even taken Home Ec.–much less years of Fashion Design) could possibly make with the skills and resources that would actually be available to him. I’d accept those costumes more if he had them after he was married to his movie-star/model Mary Jane–and even more so if he was running Parker Industries, but not when he’s making it himself at home, in high school.

I’d like to see him actually go to a local fabric store and pick up some fabric and sewing supplies and make it that way (granted he’s probably already had it more for a while since he’s been around for a while–maybe he can go to the fabric store to repair or re-make it in the film(s)). It shouldn’t look that nice–other than the awesome design, of course ;P.

Web-pits would be pretty awesome, though ;P.

  3. @16 – In fairness, Quesada didn’t really say a whole lot by way of specifics. He’s just there in that interview to self-aggrandize and be Joe Quesada. And while I don’t trust Quesada in any measurable capacity, I do trust Kevin Feige, and I keep thinking back to what he said about the new costume: “classic Spidey.”

    http://www.spidermancrawlspace.com/2015/04/12/kevin-feige-no-spidey-origin/

“We’ve already designed the costume, which is different than any of the ones that have come before. And yet ours is classic Spidey, as I think you’ll see.”

The whole “different than the ones that came before” thing is good. While I enjoyed the Raimi costume there were bits I didn’t like. The raised webbing on the costume, for one. The first Webb ASM’s costume was laughable and worthy of scorn, but they managed to correct that for the sequel. The last of that movie’s problems was the costume.

Feige’s comments are what make me keep coming back to webpits.

  4. A Marvel senior editor is praising a Marvel product. Well, I’m sold!

Its not like someone from inside Marvel would actually lie to us and use buzz or spin to generate hype for their company. Obviously this costume will be the costume to end all costumes because Marvel people say this Marvel thing is Marvel Marvel, Smurf Smurf. Shaka Khan.

  5. This is coming from the guy who said OMD was a good idea. And Parker Industries is such an iconic and relatable part of Peter’s history…. oh wait, NO IT ISN’T!

  6. I like the Raimi suit a lot better than the ASM 2 suit. I hated the spider logo on his chest with a passion. The lenses were the best part about the ASM 2 suit, everything else was done first/better on the Raimi suit.

  7. Considering what a lot of the “costumes” from the Marvel movies look like, watch it turn out to be a red hoodie, goggles, and track pants. You know, just to be “realistic,” which will prompt the fanboy magpies to jump on board saying it’s perfect because Spidey’s classic costume is “like, totally silly for a modern audience.”

Sorry, I just had to share that nightmare scenario. I am really praying for Spidey’s red and blue costume with web pits.

  8. #11

Exactly. Can’t have kids playing with their old figures or buying old merchandise off eBay. Gotta make them buy another round of action figures, doncha know.

And George is right, Disney never tried to retcon Minnie out of the picture through a deal with the devil, and then tried to pretend Minnie doesn’t exist.

  9. ASM2’s costume was perfect but this is the MCu we gotta change the outfits every movie to move toys and other merch

  10. Sorry, George. I’ll remember to phrase things a tad better. Just to clarify though: I didn’t mean anything sexual by the BC thing. Only that those four seem to have a little crew where they think of nobody (The characters, readers or other Marvel talent alike) but themselves. Apologia.

  11. Man, I’m hoping for webpits now! It’s a detail that always seems to be forgotten!

  12. “Spider-Man is Marvel’s Mickey Mouse”

Geez, Quesada’s sense of humor is really bad.

  13. @#6 – I agree, it’s the only addition I can think of that you could make to the ASM2 design, which was already pretty darn comic-accurate, to differentiate it from past suits.

  14. If it ain’t broke, don’t try to fix it. We saw how well that worked with the comics, didn’t we?

The ASM2 suit was pretty much perfect imo. Maybe reduce the size of the spider on his chest, rather the legs that went all the way down to Spidey
s junk… but other than that?

If Spidey’s just a cameo or something after the credits in Captain America 3, then I’m thankful he won’t debut wearing the Iron Spider costume. Cause Civil War.

  15. “Spider-Man is Mickey Mouse”
Never thought of Mickey as the relatable kind of character. :p
