According to Variety, Academy Award winning actress Marisa Tomei has been offered the job of playing Aunt May.
Tomei, who turned 50 last December, would be the youngest actress to play Aunt May on the big screen.
From Variety:
Now that Marvel and Sony have found their Peter Parker, the focus has turned to the aunt who raised him.
Sources tell Variety that Marisa Tomei is the choice to play Aunt May in the next installment of the “Spider-Man” franchise.
Sony and Marvel had no comment on the casting.
While insiders could not say where things stood in the deal-making process, they said an offer was made late last week for the Oscar-winning actress to join Tom Holland, who was recently tapped to play the webslinging superhero.
*****
The job marks a new direction for Tomei, who generally sticks to dramas like “The Ides of March” and “The Wrestler,” or romantic comedies like “Crazy Stupid Love” and “My Cousin Vinny” (which landed her an Oscar), rather than studio tentpoles.
She can be seen next in “Trainwreck” alongside Amy Schumer and is currently filming “The Big Short” with Christian Bale and Ryan Gosling. Tomei will also have a recurring role in the second season of Fox’s hit “Empire.” She is repped by CAA and Untitled Entertainment.
So nothing ‘confirmed’ or ‘official’ just yet. Most likely that would happen on Marvel’s Twitter, posting a picture of Tomei in a frosted wig.
–George Berryman!
Aunt May and wood are two things I never thought I would say in the same sentence.
I think she has the talent to pull this one off.
I suspect they are leaning towards Ultimate Aunt May with this. If its legit.
Otherwise if they want to go all Harry Potter over this Spider-Man franchise and have Peter start young and age up through the movies like Radcliffe did, which might include going beyond High School into his older years depending on whether they go full on Death of Spider-Man/Miles Morales or not, they’d want a younger Aunt May. It’s more insurance she will be healthy and frankly alive enough to keep participating in Spider-Man films over the next 10+ years at the very least.
… and I’m NOT joking.
@9 – That looks like a 40-50 year old woman, still in healthy condition, not a frail old woman that could drop dead from a sudden shock.
When I think of Aunt May, I think of an elderly woman, like this: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/ae/Auntmay.jpg
@7 – Here’s Tomei two years ago, sans makeup, at LAX.
I am OK with this only if she talks like she did in “My Cousin Vinny”
Aunt May is Peter’s mother-figure, but she’s not supposed to be his mother’s age. She’s supposed to be elderly. Look at the Ditko issues, she’s practically at death’s door (who was it on the podcast who first said she looked like the Cryptkeeper?). The whole reason Peter doesn’t tell her he’s Spider-Man is because he thinks the shock will kill her. Getting someone who looks as young as Marisa Tomei to play her is ridiculous.
@5 – If they did do the “Doc Ock marries Aunt May” storyline, they’d hire someone older than Tomei to play Ock.
Well, if they ever decided to adapt the “Doc Ock marries Aunt May” storyline, it’d be more plausible and less icky…

@3 – I just made that point to Bailey and the other Crawlspace podcast folks on FB. I’ll just put what I said there in quotes. Easier on my fingers!
So thanks to The Wrestler, this is the first live-action portrayal of Aunt May that I’ve seen her naked.
Never thought the day would come when I can say that I had unpure thoughts about Aunt May….but that day has come.
I suddenly have an insane desire to see Jason Alexander cast as Ben for the sake of an unfunny reference 20 years past being relevant.
