Online Purchaser Gets Original Amazing Spider-Man #1 By Mistake

OriginalAmazingSpider-Man#1If you thought honesty and integrity were in short supply in our more cynical, jaded age, think again! Over on the AK47.net, a forum which usually discusses topics regarding guns and firearms, a user going by the handle The_Macallan, posted the following:

So I ordered a comic book online, and the seller sent me the wrong one. They sent me this one instead:

The comic they sent him was a copy of the original Amazing Spider-Man #1 (1963) by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, which, depending on the condition, can sell on average between $2,000 to $36,000 (some auctions have sold a copy for more than $83,000 and others have even gone as high as $200,000).

So what did The_Macallan do when he found out he’d received one of the most sought-after comics of all time? He returned it!

I contacted the seller about their mistake and they were EXTREMELY relieved to hear from me and that I’d be sending it back to them.

Wow. So I got to hold a piece of cultural history for at least a couple of days.

I’d say someone has taken the immortal words “with great power comes great responsibility” to heart, don’t you?

  1. Reminds me of something that happened to me about a 15 years ago. I had ordered some Secret Wars figures from a comic shop. (Baron Zemo and Kang) if you must know. When I got the box there was another envelope inside. I was pretty confused but I opened it up and inside was Amazing Spider-Man 300. I couldn’t believe it. Also inside the envelope was an order invoice with the real guy who ordered it’s name and addy on it.

Now I didn’t have this issue. I had 299, but not 300. So I could have kept it, but instead I put a note in the envelope to tell the guy what happened, sealed it up and went to the post office and sent it to the guy on my own dime. Till this day I still do not have Amazing Spider-Man 300 because I’m not willing to throw out the kinda money most people are asking for it. I could have got one for free, but I did what Spidey would do.

  2. There’s a joke about Marvel and NEW NUMBER ONES in here somewhere. Someone should find it.

  3. I’m with #5, I don’t know what I would do in that situation. Most likely I’d feel guilty about potentially profiting on someone’s mistake. But how do you accidentally send Amazing #1? Shouldn’t that be protected in a hard plastic sleeve and secured in a safe?

  4. This guy is amazing. He knew what he had and still did the right thing. I commend him.

  5. I’ll be honest here. Not sure if this guy’s my hero or the single biggest “honor before reason” example I’ve heard of.

  6. So not only is this guy extremely lucky, but he’s also got a good personality.

  7. Without knowing anything more about the story, I’m gonna go out on a limb and guess this guy is Canadian. He probably apologized when he return the comic too.
