Spidey Memories#14

From "Amazing Spider-Man" issue 389. Peter finds out that the mastermind behind the robot parents was Harry Osborn, who was thought to be dead at the time. I wonder if Norman ever found out about the time Harry really won.

  1. I know there are people that will disagree with me on this, but my attitude isn’t Spectacular Spider-man #200 and the like didn’t happen and the new stuff does, My attitude is ‘The new stuff doesn’t happen and the old stuff did’.

See, this is why the book was important back then. Stuff happened, it wasn’t a big put on!

  2. The dynamic as Harry beneath the Goblin mask is so much better than Norman at times despite the man’s history and the power he has now because there will never be anything like going to war with your best friend. I can’t wait to see where this new creative team takes Harry since his BND return, because the torment Peter felt since his death was perfect for his character. Bringing him back might go terribly wrong, but as Kevin Cushing has shown me: good things can be done with his character!! (At least better than running the world at this point e.g. N.O.)

  3. If this panel were done today, the artist would simply copy and paste the same drawing of the Green Goblin in the panel four times instead of drawing it four times, like it was done here. Ah, the good old days.

  4. In the first Spider-man “movie game” when Peter looks through his picture book there’s a page with Harry and Norman that says “Gotcha” (in this exact font) above them. I remember freaking out going “omg easter egg!” (or something to that extent) and was disappointed when nobody else knew what I was talking about =/ lol. Sadly, this just brings back memories of the best damn comics I’ve ever read that are being brought down with today’s stuff….

  5. @Hornacek: I agree — having the mastermind be dead already was a big twist. The devastation and helplessness really came across on this beautiful page.

  6. I remember reading this story. I thought “How are they going to end this? Who’s going to be the one behind it? And are they going to cop out and have Spidey almost kill them but then say yet again ‘No, I’m not gonna kill you, that would make me as bad as you.'” Having the mastermind be already dead (stupid Mephisto!) was a great reveal. DeMatthis was in his stride.
