Marc Webb: Rhino Has Four Minutes Of Screentime In ASM2

PGRHNO1While speaking at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Festival in Austin, Texas this weekend Marc Webb addressed fan concerns about too many villains being thrown into the Amazing Spider-Man sequel. The ASM2 director revealed the following about Paul Giamatti’s role as the Rhino in the film (via the Hollywood Reporter):

During an audience question-and-answer segment, a man in his twenties reminded Webb that the third installment of Sam Raimi’s original trilogy — 2007’s Spider-Man 3 — was undone by the inclusion of too many villains. The fan then pointed out that Webb’s sequel runs the risk of falling into the same trap, as it features not just Electro and Rhino but Harry Osbourne — the Green Goblin’s alter-ego — as well. (Dane DeHaan tackles the part last played by James Franco.)

“We’re obviously familiar with the complaints people had,” Webb replied, then explained that the key to the movie’s success lies in the writing. “We’re very careful to make sure the stories intertwine. For Peter Parker, it’s very important that you create obstacles that are difficult to overcome.”

Webb added that Giamatti’s character — a role he won before the script had even been written, after Webb heard the actor saying he’d always wanted to play Rhino on Conan O’Brien’s talk show — is only “in the movie for four minutes.”

It would be safe to assume that Giamatti’s role as the Rhino will be expanded in the proposed Sinister Six film and perhaps further sequels.

  1. @7… after the fiasco of the last film (TASM), it can only get better… so here’s hoping. 🙂

  2. I was assuming it was something along the lines of a cameo or a Bond style opening just like #2 said. Makes sense given what we knew about the circumstances Giamatti got the part under.

I’m so excited for this movie.

  3. I agree that having a nice action packed opening with a throw away villain like the Rhino would be fun start. Based on the trailers, I am on page with Lockdown on how they could tie in Rhino to the rest of the story…

Again, hopeful this movie will not suck.

  4. I agree Adam. Plus, from the trailers I could see as Spider-Man goes to stop the truck hijack, Alex puts on the suit. Spidey fights him and beats him and discovers Oscorp made the suit.

  5. I always liked the idea of a James Bond-esque opening. Where Spider-Man fights someone who would look good on screen, but maybe couldn’t carry their own movie. Then after an big opening the real film could start.

  6. If this is true then it brilliant. It means Webb acknowledges the failing of Raimi 3 being too many villains and has addressed it. And we get something many fans have always wanted. A villain that exists in the film just to be beaten up. And like the George says, Rhino can always come back in the Sinister Six.
