UPDATED at 5:00 pm CST – TMZ confirms that Andrew Garfield did spend the day with Miles Scott at Disneyland after their Oscar presentation was scrapped. Additionally, Garfield and Miles did their own mini-Oscar ceremony in the Scott family’s hotel room. Again – very classy of Andrew Garfield to go all out for Miles Scott! TMZ also has a pic of Garfield & Scott together.

Current Hollywood Spider-Man Andrew Garfield was not to be seen at the Academy Awards on Sunday night despite being previously scheduled as a presenter. ‘Captain America’ Chris Evans stepped in as a last minute replacement. But what was behind the couple’s absence? Radar Online reports it was a ‘personal matter’ that caused Garfield & Stone to cancel:

Pals close to the couple reveal their absence must have been for a serious reason.

“It was disheartening to learn that Andrew canceled on the Oscars,” an insider told Radar.

“If it were a fight or something between them one would have just came without the other, but this seemed to be more of something going on with one of their families.”

Another source told Radar that Stone, 25, had a long standing family commitment in Arizona.

But was this really the case? Apparently not. The Academy released a statement through a spokesperson saying that a spot with Garfield and Batkid & cancer survivor Miles Scott had to be cut from the production. During the spot, which was supposed to have been set-up via the Make A Wish Foundation (who had the cancer survivor become Batkid last year, which stormed the Internet for several days), Miles – as Batkid – was to be named an ‘Official Superhero.’ E! Online reports that the Academy spokesperson stated:

Due to the nature of a live show, hard decisions sometimes must be made which require the Academy to cut segments due to the logistics of production. Andrew Garfield understood that his segment had to be omitted, and he drove to Disneyland on Monday to spend time with 5-year-old Miles Scott (Batkid) and his family.

Good for Spidey to make time to visit Batkid at Disneyland after the Oscar spot was cut!
