Vulture magazine, which is ironic, recently interview Spider-Man director Sam Raimi about what led to Spider-Man 4 falling apart. Basically he didn’t like the script and didn’t want to make an underwhelming film. He also confirms Anne Hathaway was going to play Felicia Hardy.
It really was the most amicable and undramatic of breakups: It was simply that we had a deadline and I couldn’t get the story to work on a level that I wanted it to work. I was very unhappy with Spider-Man 3, and I wanted to make Spider-Man 4 to end on a very high note, the best Spider-Man of them all. But I couldn’t get the script together in time, due to my own failings, and I said to Sony, “I don’t want to make a movie that is less than great, so I think we shouldn’t make this picture. Go ahead with your reboot, which you’ve been planning anyway.” And [Sony co-chairman] Amy Pascal said, “Thank you. Thank you for not wasting the studio’s money, and I appreciate your candor.” So we left on the best of terms, both of us trying to do the best thing for fans, the good name of Spider-Man, and Sony Studios.

The only thing I blamed him for, and continue to blame him for, is his treatment of Venom. He could’ve made him awesome, but he didn’t.

I agree. MJ was a pointless character most of the time that was just there to scream and get saved. Didn’t help that Dunst’s acting was so uninspired as well. Same with Tobey though he was better then she was. And the chemistry between them felt so non-existent. Say what you will about the reboot but Stone and Garfield though a great job of seeming like they actually care about one another. And they didn’t just have Gwen needing to be saved constantly she actually contributed beyond yelling for her life. 1 was solid. 2 was meh. 3 was terrible. Overall the Raimi trilogy wasn’t that good at all.
I’ve discussed this in the past with someone else on here. It’ didn’t really feel like Spider-Man to me. You like it fair enough, but I don’t so would you kindly not say I’m harsh on it as I’m entitled to my opinion as well.

And her character needed plenty of improving

Really wish Raimi did a Spider-Man 4 and then maybe we wouldn’t have had that atrousious reboot.
I loved The Amazing Spider-Man, but I’ll admit I would have liked to see what Spider-Man 4 would have been like. The very end of Spider-Man 3 felt like an unceremonious end to the trilogy, but considering how it pretty much resolved the lingering plot threads, I’m curious what story he would have gone with so that SM4 wouldn’t have felt unnecessary.

It really takes a big man to admit his faults, and for Sam Raimi to be humble enough to not want to pass off more so-so movies or even crap is admirable (unfortunately we got crap anyway with that awful reboot).
Raimi is the man and definitely has some more great films in his future.
Well, more like Rami was trying to do the best for the hands. If Sony wasn’t tying them up with deadlines and bad scripts. But, oh well, Sony wanted to do a Spidey movie on the cheap so they could get some more money for themselves. It never makes any sense why these film companies just assume it’s nothing more than the name (like a Spider-man, or a Green Lantern) that’s needed for a movie to be a hit. It’s not, they all need quality people in it, writing it, directing it.
