Recently on the Crawlspace podcast I was asked what my favorite piece of art from John Romita Jr. was. This scene from ASM vol.2 #50 in my opinion perfectly captures the emotional energy and deft rendering that Romita Jr. continuously put out during his run with JMS.

Maybe Peter is standing on an elevation. :p Beautiful art nonetheless.
Yeah, it is funny! Pete’s not a tall guy, MJ has super model height. But this scene in context was very emotional and just worked. I remember pulling put the proposal issue of ASM when this came out to compare the last page. It had a similar drawing of Pete and MJ by JRJR, a full page face to face that actual is a much more realistic drawing, anatomically. I took this newer one to be more impressionistic. It gets the story across perfectly.
What’s up with the anatomy? Peter looks like he is suffering from gigantism his head is so huge. His head also looks like it is the same size as his torso. Mj’s hands are the size of her head, and Peter looks like he could wrap his hands around his own neck and touch his fingers they are so large. Overall the effect is of a terrible out of proportion Peter embracing a 14 year old old looking Mj with giant hands. Maybe I just pick up on this stuff because I am an artist but this is nearly Liefeld level bad. I am not a fan of Romita’s art, but I do not regard him as a bad artist (every artist has an off image here and there). This is just a poor representation of his work.
Dude…
WHAT is up with Pete’s hairline?
This is the sort of tender sentiment the current team doesn’t know how to do.
My favorite scene from my favorite issue of my favorite era of ASM-JMS and JRJR really set the Gold Standard for Spidey. Oh, I miss seeing tem written and drawn so well. Come back, JMS! All is forgiven! We need you and JRJR!
Beautifully written scene, and a long awaited moment at the time it appeared, bringing MJ back to the book and to Peter (and to us, the readers). And just one of the pages that has long-cemented John Romita JR as my all-time favourite Spidey artist. Boy, do I miss this version of Pete and MJ.
Love, love, love this panel.
My favorite moment in Spider-Man history.
JRJR really hit it out of the park during that run. His art was top notch.
This has always been my favorite page from the JMS run. Nice selection!
From a time where Spider-Man was truly captivating. I feel as if I’ll never experiance this again, at least not in 616.
I really lovethis panel too. I have a real pet peeve in comic books whenever charactrs cry. Its very difficult to pull off well in my eyes without it coming off as cheesy or over dramatic or making characters seem weak (it doesn’t help that it is usually used for women, espeially back in the slver and even the bronze age). But somehow both Deodado Jr and Romita Jr at least on thier JMS runs) managed to pull off scenes like this where the characters are eary eyed and stuff an it rarely feel forcedor off putting. This scene perfectly illustrates that
I used this picture for that Make Mine Married contest or whatever it was called. When looking for panels of these two, this was my favorite.
