Breevort on Spidey’s Erased Marriage

Marvel just released a cool variant cover for Astonishing X-Men #51. It features the various Marvel weddings that have happened over the years. Marvel Editor Tom Breevort was asked on his Formspring account why the Spider-Man marriage wasn’t there. Here’s a cut and paste of the conversation. What do you think of his reply?

Question: Why was Spider-Man’s wedding omitted from the variant cover to Astonishing X-Men #51? I’d have expected to see it featured on a cover celebrating Marvel’s most memorable weddings.

Breevort: That marriage was erased and undone, so it made sense not to even go there.

  1. Amazing issues here. I’m very happy to peer your article. Thanks a lot and I am taking a look ahead to touch you. Will you kindly drop me a e-mail?

  2. The funny thing about this cover is, if any of these weddings were trend setters, Northstar’s wedding is just as doomed to failure and disaster as all the other ones they have shown there.
Everyone knows by now that Marvel hates wedded couples outside of the Richards.

  3. I want them to remove Mary Jane from the book entirely now… just to see what happens.

They already lost a ton of readers after splitting them up. Why stop pissing us off now?

  4. Sickening. But on a positive note, well, a wishful thinking note. I just had a thought. The life-changing thing event upcoming in ASM… it wouldn’t be MJ and Spidey getting married all over again, would it? I know. Stupid is as stupid does…

  5. @ #8: and yet, they’ve no problem putting out the trade “Spider-Man/Mary Jane:Face It Tiger, You Just Hit the Jackpot”…..

  6. I actually think Marvel would track down ever copy of annual 21 and burn them if they could, simply so they can continue to say “it never happened.”

  7. In one of Marvel’s recent email newsletters, they actually did a poll on which Marvel wedding fans liked the most… Spider-Man and MJ was still on that list. It actually won with about 46%

  8. It’s included because, even if most of those marriages have been dissolved, they still at least happened in the Marvel universe after OMD. Still, what the hell, Marvel?

  9. It makes sense why the Spider-Marriage isn’t on the cover, all the other weddings happened in canon and now the Spider-Wedding didn’t. It’s stupid that OMD happened, no denying that, but there’s no way anyone should expect Marvel to acknowledge the wedding even on variant covers.

Moreover if they put the wedding on the cover then fans would still be arguing almost the same thing except replace “why didn’t they put it on the cover” with “Oh so now he can get married in a cover but not in continuity!” It’s a no-win situation for Marvel and their best move was to just not mention it.

As for the “fill in your own” variant thing here you go: http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e44/WCReaf/AstonishingXMen_51_SpideyVariant.jpg

  10. meh, they will do what they want and shove whatever they wish down our throats…it is up to us not to buy…To expect anything else is folly….Maybe a refund for 20 years plus of married Spidey comics cheques are all in our respective mailboxes:)

  11. @#2 Panther and Storm are nattling each other in AvX, so you might need to make thay two

  12. How does the make your own wedding variant work? Will the blank space be left as is or is it one of those “order N amount and get your own photo” deals?

  13. I get why they didn’t include the Spider Marriage. I don’t like it, but I get it.

  14. Total BS move by Marvel. That quote from Breevort should have been followed by the line “The Breevort has spoken!”.

I can understand distinguishing btn separated/divorced couples and what happened with Peter/MJ, but the reality is that the fans didn’t make the deal with Mephisto and they still remember. Marvel had no problem championing Spidey’s marriage when Peter/MJ were on the cover of the 2005 TPB ‘Marvel Weddings’…and now, its not even worth a pic on a variant cover? Oh, that’s right it never happened and somehow the Amazing Spidey Annual 21 disappeared out of my collection in 2008…

  15. The only two that are still married in the image are Luke/ Jessica, Black Panther/ Storm, Reed/ Sue. My count is 3 still married, 6 separated or divorced.

  16. The marriage was undone…how many people on that cover are still married?

Also Johnny and Alicia is missing…but I guess I can understand that.
