Over the next few days, Ill be posting the Online Diary. For the record: Parts of this were written on the plane, so forgive the change in tense.
San Diego Comic Con: Day “-1”
By Zach Joiner
San Diego is for many comic fans, the ‘Mecca’ of fandom. It’s where all the cool stuff happens. It’s where the announcements for the next year are made. This year, I got the honor of going for this website. It’s an honor that I’ve been given by Brad himself for submitting news articles for this website over the years. But none of them have been as grand, great or huge as this assignment.
I will freely admit to you that I’ve never flown by myself before round trip. There was a time not too long ago which I flew back from somewhere, but never there and back. There is a bit a nervousness to the flight, simply because you always hear what goes wrong. But so far, as leas at the writing of this introduction, I’m currently enjoying my flight from some undisclosed location in Texas to Denver. I have a layover there, before making the trip to the convention.
Along the last eight years, I have gotten to know some great people. Some of them come and go, but there are some who have become great friends of mine. Stella, our other correspondent, has been wonderful. Yes, she’s rather infamous for her ‘nut shots’ to me during her early days of the beginning of her tenure on the Podcast, but she’s a kind soul and I’m most excited to work with, and meet her for the first time. Josh Bertone and I have been good friends for awhile, and our collaborations’ in the ‘spin off’ podcast, Clone Saga Chronicles, have been all wonderful trying (to get the people on) and a wonderful experience. I can’t wait to meet him, simply because of our interactions over the last 3 years. He’s fiercely smart when it comes to the world of Spider-Man and comics in General. Along with my fellow Admin and Mod, I’m happy to have along two more people who make not only the Podcast I host enjoyable but also one of the few shows I listen to, Amazing Spider-Man Classics, a blast to laugh. Jon Wilson and Don Grant, the latter of whom you know as “Mr. Amazing Reviewer”, have along with Bertone (Who I swear is trying to outdo our beloved Mike Bailey in being the Hardest Working Man in Podcasting) have produced a fun look back at the craziness of the 1960s Spider-Man stories that are held in such High regard today.
Quite honestly, I’m the last to arrive. I didn’t get the early start that most everyone else got. Permit me, if you will to explain. I work at a golf course, and this week happens to be one of the largest tournaments that happen in the year. So me being the loyal and productive employee, worked until the last moment to get as much done as possible. So sadly this made me the very last to arrive. Thusly, I did not get to enjoy preview night.
My Journey began at 1 PM. I arrived and went through security, checked in, and waited for a couple of hours. Once I got there, I departed for Denver. The Denver flight was bumpy, and terrible; the landing was rough, and I got a bit queasy. Needless to say, this flight is the one I didn’t want to have. But… the flight to SD was nice, after some motion sickness pills. Finally, I arrived. It was really happening.
I met with Jon M. Wilson First. Bertone, Don, and Stella went to Preview night. We ate dinner, and once those pics come in, we’ll post them. Watch this space for more.
EXCELSIOR!
Spideydude.
Maybe Stella won’t have to settle for a verbal nutshot this time. LOL
And Jon? Seriously, I think he’s trying to outdo both Bertone and Michael Bailey now, with Teenage Wasteland-An Ultimate Spider-Man Podcast(@teenagewasteland133.libsyn.com), Amazing Spider-Man Classics(found@amazingspiderman.libsyn.com) Golden Age Superman(found @ goldenagesuperman.libsyn.com) and The Mighty Shield.(@ the mightyshield.com) I’ll take the cash now, Jon!
I had my first experience flying last Christmas when I went to Disney World. Luckily, I bought the Civil War Spider-Man Hardcover and the two Back in Black Volumes in Downtown Disney for the flight home. I was still kinda upset, but that’s because that’s when I caught up and stopped reading Spider-Man.
that being said though… flying to San Diego for Comic Con would be totally worth it. Looking forward to the next update.
flying is dreadful… spoiler for my personal fear entry for the next Fear Itself review.
Enjoy it guys!!!
