Spidey’s Fantastic New Team

In the aftermath of Johnny Storm’s death in the latest Fantastic Four storyline, the team is starting over with a new look. Their new comic, titled simply FF, will feature the team’s newest member, Spider-Man. Now, the “Future Foundation” works to “save the Marvel Universe from its greatest threats and prevent future dangers from arising.” But, according to Marvel, “even with knowledge of what’s to come and one of the most powerful teams ever assembled, just what villainous force could stand in their way?”

Marvel has more pictures from the upcoming series at their site, where it says issue #1 will debut in March of 2011.

What say you? Any thoughts on this new incarnation of the FF? Will anyone be picking this new title up? How long will this new team last? How many more titles can we fit Spider-Man in? I think his new costume here looks a lot like the new X-Force costumes. Hopefully he doesn’t pull double duty, though, and team up with his Avengers buddy Wolverine on that team as well.

  1. hickman dragged me into the Fantastic which i loved, and now he got rid of the fantastic to buy in MORE publicity…

now i have nothing… no sale.

  2. I’d be really surprised if this influenced his appearance in the Avengers titles. Marvel doesn’t seem to have a problem reusing their characters on multiple teams so this shouldn’t be any different.

  3. I am not a big Fantastic Four fan. So, I’m not thrilled about this news, especially if it has any implications on Spidey’s involvement with the Avengers (New or otherwise). I am just now catching up on the early New Avengers issues with him and I love his interactions with the team members. I’m affraid FF will be just as stale, silly, and boring as I’ve always found it. No offense to the FF fans out there, just a matter of taste.

  4. To the ones saying he can´t be on here since he is on the avengers teams as well, remember that thing is also on the new avengers. I like the uniforms. And the name change makes sense.

  5. I like the logo design for the original FF members but don’t have a problem with them leaving it off of Spidey’s outfit. I think it would be a little disrespectful to his friend Johnny for him to completely take his spot on the team, and by keeping the logo to the original 3 members it gives them more meaning and kind of a reminder of their fallen teammate.

  6. I can see the Anti-Venom vibe to the Spider-man costume for sure. When I look at the “police line-up” illustration of the new character designs, I see more of a comparison to Snake-eyes in GI Joe comics–Spider-man as mysterious member. I wonder if Hickman and company will play that aspect up. (He can be silent as he was in those Electric Company shorts!)

I like the new outfits for Reed and Sue. There’s certainly a pulp-future sort of vibe going on. When I saw Reed’s costume in the lineup, I couldn’t help but think of another “future” character–Edmond Hamiltion’s Captain Future of the old pulps. I can imagine Curtis Newton wearing that outfit, especially if the white were replaced by a slightly reflective silver. I like the “binary” symbols–or perhaps that should be ternary, which would become quaternary assuming Johnny Storm returns. Whatever you call the symbols, it seems to me a bit more evocative than the circle 4–these days, the circle four seems outdated somehow. The ternary symbols seem more futuristic to me. I hope those symbols remain, but in this era of change for change sake, I have little optimism for that. I tend to think as soon as the Torch returns, it will be business as usual.

By the way, isn’t it interesting that while Spider-man is going to be a member, his uniform seems a bit “one of these things is not like the others?” The original characters have a base-3 pattern to their symbol; Spidey’s symbol is forced to fit. Is that in character?

Renamimg the book is a pretty good idea. Don’t get me wrong, I like the Fantastic Four–I have the collected DVD ROM, and read some issues now and again–but I’ve often wondered if that name was too limiting. Future Foundation isn’t as satisfying as I would like, but you are no longer limited to four members of the Richards family–and with a son, daughter, and what looks to be school of for gifted individuals–is Xavier going to sue?–it really isn’t a four member story anymore. That’s another thing I would hope would stick, even with the Torch’s return.

    Anyway, I’ve blathered along enough.

  7. yeah, definitely an anti-venom vibe. Since Brock co-opted his look, he figures turnabout is fair play? Gonna be a pain to keep a white suit clean with all the wall crawling and whatnot. Still, I actually like the look of the suit!

  8. it’s kind of odd how the other three members all have matching logos on their costumes and spidey’s sticks out

  9. Wow. That is one ugly suit on Spider-Man. He looks like Anti-Spidey.

Sorry, Marvel, but I’m still not back until the Spider-Marriage returns. I’ll pass, thank you.

  10. Remember when Spider-Man was a loner?! I guess Disney isn’t married to that idea! 🙂

  11. To me, Spidey’s suit kind of makes him look like Anti-Venom. I think this’ll only last a year….Marvel will change the numbering back to normal when #600 of Fantastic Four comes out. That’s probably where we’ll find out that the Human Hotfoot never died.

  12. So this is where this uniform comes in
I still like it more than the reboot costume

How many times have Spider-Man become a member of the FF thus far? Or at least a team by the name? Second time or more?

  13. I’m willing to pick up the first issue, haven’t read Fantastic Four since the whole “Initiative” run though. The uniforms look interesting but yet I can’t help but also notice they almost look like the uniforms worn in Uncanny X-Force.

  14. No, still not getting it. The FF book has always been boring to me and Spidey isn’t going to change that. It’s just a dumb temporary gimmick anyway.

  15. seriously
this is the kind of situation where having ben reilly alive would be really useful, it would allow the fabulous parker boys to split their duties REALISTICALLY between different teams and titles

    just sayin

  16. Fantastic Four has been the only Marvel title I’ve been buying for a buncha months now. So if it’s still the same guy writing it, I’ll be psyched to continue reading it and get a nice dose of spidey.

  17. I like Hickman’s work… but honestly this all seems like a huge marketing ploy to me.

And since putting Wolverine and Deadpool in everything is getting old, I guess they’re trying to fill that spot with Spidey. First the Avengers, then the New Avengers, then FF? What’s next, the Defenders?

  18. I thought Hickman was brilliant on JSA – I haven’t tried his FF yet but this might get me to. Spidey shouldn’t be on both the Avengers and FF in my opinion but other than that it could be a good run. Be curious how long it lasts.

  19. Coming up next…Spidey teaching at Avengers Academy, going on missions with the Secret Avengers, traveling to Canada to hang out with Alpha Flight, hopping the pond to work with MI:13…who else? I think Israel and Japan have teams. The only teams he’s not qualified to join are the X-Teams and the Inhumans.

Scratch Marvel Comics…it’s Spider-Man, Wolverine, and Deadpool Comics. DSW Comics? No, that’s already taken by a shoe store. WSD Comics. Perfect.

  20. Ill be picking this one up. Spidey, my favorite superhero ever joins the FF, my favorite team ever? Jonathon Hickman writting? Sold!

  21. In terms of the characters’ history, I think this makes sense. However I figured there would be a time perios of some mourning for Johnny, but I guess the neverending quest for SCIENCE! never sleeps.

But who’s writing it again? If it’s any of the Brain Trust it’ll be silly.
