MARCO SPEAKS SPIDEY: Silk (2023) #5 REVIEW

The past few months have been a wild ride for Silk and her brother, Albert. They have found themselves head-to-head with another power duo of siblings, Saya and Max. And with Wong at their side now, this time, they might actually have a chance at putting an end to Saya’s terror once and for all. This recent arc for Silk has been so fun to watch unfold before our very own eyes, and it has been a joy to read and experience along with all the other fans around the world. Silk has really come into her own and has proven that she possesses the star potential to really carry the Marvel Universe into the future. I am looking forward to seeing more of her in all forms of media, as I hope she grows into an even bigger star in the coming years. And surprisingly, it has also been a wonderful experience seeing Albert mature into his own, as well. I am expecting many more dynamic duo adventures featuring Silk and Albert, taking down all sorts of monstrous threats together as siblings.

THE SPINE-TINGLING CONCLUSION! Silk faces her worst nightmare! She ventures into a horrifying dream in an attempt to save her brother. But if you die in this dream…you die in real life.

PROS:

  • At the heart and core of this tale is a story about brothers and sisters. What resonates with me, especially, in this issue, is the undying and loyal love that siblings have for one another, despite all the hardships and trials. But even more important than this is realizing that love can only take you so far. Max had to learn that the hard way. Thanks to Silk, Albert and Wong, Max has now realized that he cannot keep on turning a blind eye to the evil and sinister actions of his sister, Saya.
  • The art team has done such a good job with this title, in the past few months. The dreamscape can usually be such a challenge to portray for artists because it has to capture the perfect balance of realism and fantasy. But with this Silk run, it has been such a psychedelic and fun adventure seeing Silk and Albert try to fight and survive all the dangers and threats of the dreamworld. The pages and panels showcasing all the different fantasy worlds inside Albert’s mind were pretty trippy. And it was just so satisfying to see Albert own his world and dictate the rules of his domain.
  • Finally, the two brothers on both sides have completed their redemption arc. Albert has finally won over Silk and convinced her to let him into her world. And, on the other side, Max has finally escaped the shadow of his evil sister, Saya. Although he still has to turn himself in and answer for his past sins, at least he is now moving in the right direction as a human being.

CONS:

  • It almost feels that the demon version of Saya was defeated too quickly. I appreciate how Silk practically admitted that it is only a matter of time before Saya comes back with a vengeance, so there is that. But I was already starting to warm up to Saya as a major villain, with so much power and potential… only to see her taken down and defeated right away.

FINAL GRADE: B+

I am definitely looking forward to the next stories and arcs that will star Silk. It is exciting because now she has fully accepted Albert into her superheroics. Now, while Albert may be getting ahead of himself, asking for a costume, it’s just nice to see Silk letting him in. And it was also very heartwarming to see Silk and Albert just having a nice, quiet evening together, without any of the world’s problems loaded on their shoulders. Now, it is only a matter of time before we see how Silk and her brother fit into the bigger arcs occurring in the Spider-Man universe. Who knows, maybe she will have to face off against the symbiotes very soon, right? I’d like to see that showdown, as well!

  1. I also really enjoyed this miniseries too. Actually, I’ve enjoyed all of Silk’s outings after they got her away from Dan Slott and into Robbie Thompson’s hands (though admittedly Slott’s characterization of Silk in the “End of the Spider-Verse” storyline was pretty good). Emily Kim has been a fantastic in picking up where Thompson’s series ended.

My only real quibble with Kim’s two “Silk” mini-series doesn’t have to do with her handling of them so much as the fact that they’re just that, mini-series. With mini-series, creative teams are usually constrained to the main plot and have little space for subplots or “drama” scenes with character interactions vs. action scenes. That Kim is able to still incorporate elements of these in her mini-series is a testament to her skill, and I’d like to see what she could really pull off when not restricted to five issues. That might also give her a chance to bring back some of Silk’s other supporting characters from Thompson’s run, which is another thing a mini-series’ limited run hampers, as there’s rarely room for secondary characters not immediately tied into the main plot.

Hopefully this series’ done well enough to get Silk another monthly.
