Welcome back, Spider-Man fans! Hopefully everyone has had a chance to see “Spider-Man: No Way Home” by now. If you saw the film, you know that it sets up a lot of possibilities for the next MCU Spidey outing. For this month’s Spider-Tracer, we’ll be looking at ten things from the comics that I hope to see adapted into the next film, which is already being discussed by Sony and Disney. And how can it not be? It’s making big bucks for the two companies right now. I don’t want to see ALL of this happen in the next movie, mind you; it would be far too crowded! But there’s enough potential here for another trilogy at the very least.
There will be some spoilers that follow (not only for “No Way Home”, but some recent shows like “Hawkeye, as well), so be sure to stop reading now and come back once you’ve gotten all caught up, capiche? And worry not, you’ll be getting your monthly dose of Spider-Man history, as well.
- The Kingpin
The Kingpin is a foe going way back to “The Amazing Spider-Man” Volume 1, #50. And if you’ve seen Disney+’s recent “Hawkeye” show, you’ll know that Vincent D’Onofrio has returned to his role as the Kingpin following the cancellation of Netflix’s “Daredevil” show. Of course, Kingpin seemingly dies at the end of the final episode, but there’s no way D’Onofrio only returned for one somewhat minor appearance. Also, he escaped a similar fate in the comics, so the precedent for his return is certainly there. D’Onofrio has stated several times that he wants to battle Spider-Man in a movie, and the criminal underworld is an element mostly missing from Spider-Man movies of the past. Our closest glimpse into this would be the Vulture dealing weapons and tech, but it doesn’t pack quite the same punch Kingpin himself does (and man can that guy punch!). Kingpin took quite a beating in the “Hawkeye” show, so seeing him throw down with the Web-Head shouldn’t be an issue (he had an arrow shot into his chest, for starters, and merely broke it off in anger!). The only thing that could make a battle with the Kingpin better would be a team-up with…
- Daredevil
Yep! Charlie Cox returned to the character of Matt Murdock in “Spider-Man: No Way Home”! While his appearance in the movie was relatively minor, I’m hopeful that it set up a future appearance for Murdock in the next Spider-Man movie, complete with his Daredevil costume (Are you hoping for the standard red, or the ol’ yellow outfit? Let me know in the comments below!). Spider-Man and Daredevil have been teaming up since “The Amazing Spider-Man” Volume 1, #16, with plenty of team-ups since. To see both heroes team up against one of their biggest villains from the comics (literally!) would be mind-blowing. The fact that such a team-up and battle is possible at long last on the big screen just amazes me beyond words. The MCU Spider-Man films love teaming Spider-Man up with another hero, and who better than the Man Without Fear?
- Scorpion
Teased back in “Spider-Man: Homecoming”, Mac Gargan is languishing in a prison cell with the goal of getting his revenge on Spider-Man. At the end of “No Way Home”, J. Jonah Jameson still considers Spider-Man a menace. How cool would it be to see Jameson finance the Scorpion’s creation, a move taken right out of the Scorpion’s first appearance in “The Amazing Spider-Man” Volume 1, #20? We’ve never gotten to see JJJ really do anything bad in a Spider-Man movie before, and this would be the perfect opportunity to change things up a little with some more inspiration from the comics.
- The Black Costume Saga
If you stayed around until the end of the movie, you saw that a misplaced Eddie Brock left a piece of his Venom symbiote behind before immediately being transported back to his home universe. This, of course, leaves things open for Spider-Man to get a new black costume, which we saw happen in “The Amazing Spider-Man” #252! With Spider-Man currently wearing a more classic version of his comics costume, one has to hope this would lead to a more classic looking Symbiote Spider-Man, as well. In order to differentiate itself from “Spider-Man 3”, perhaps the sequel to “No Way Home” can have the forthcoming Fantastic Four lend a hand in helping him remove the suit just as they did in “The Amazing Spider-Man” #258.
- Venom
You can’t have a Black Costume Saga without Venom, can you? However, with Eddie, as depicted by Tom Hardy, leading his own franchise set in an alternate universe, will Marvel Studios use Hardy to portray their own version of Eddie, or perhaps even use a different host? With the potential for the Scorpion to finally show up as I said, could he, once defeated, find the black costume and become Venom, just as he did in Mark Millar’s “Marvel Knights: Spider-Man” run?
- “Kraven’s Last Hunt”
With a Kraven solo movie on the way, as well as the black costume being in the MCU, could an adaptation of “Kraven’s Last Hunt” also be in the cards? It is one of the most popular Spider-Man stories of all time, and to see it finally happen up on the big screen would be a treat for Spider-Man fans! Kraven, as we know, was a villain considered to be the main foe in “No Way Home” before they settled on the multiverse villains. Knowing he’s on Marvel and Sony’s radar means this has to be an inevitable story for the movies eventually, right?
- The Jackal/ “The Clone Saga”
At the end of “No Way Home”, we see that Peter is studying to get his GED so that he can go to college. Of course, one of his professors should be Miles Warren, the deadly Jackal! And if you’re gonna do the Jackal, you’ve just gotta adapt “The Clone Saga”. While I myself am a big fan of this divisive story, the story does have its detractors. However, this hasn’t stopped Marvel Studios from using despised story material in the past. Just look at “No Way Home” and its use of the material from “One More Day/ OMIT”. Besides, if it brings back Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, even for just a little bit, how could you say no? With Sony looking to do numerous Spider-Man movie spin-offs, setting up the Scarlet Spider here would be a no brainer. I’d personally recommend using “The Lost Years” as a basis for Ben Reilly’s solo film, but that’s just me. If they were to adapt “The Clone Saga” and/or do a Scarlet Spider spin-off, what stories would you personally like to see adapted? Let me know in the comments section below!
- Mysterio’s Return
Recently, concept art for “No Way Home” has surfaced depicting the return of Quentin Beck’s fishbowl wearing supervillain. Sure, Murdock cleared Peter Parker’s name, but it still feels like there’s a lot left unresolved by leaving Beck dead. Mysterio fakes his death in the comics all the time (he even did it in a Daredevil comic once!), and to not see him return in the movies would be, well, a crime. Beck teaming up with Kingpin might not be a bad idea for that Spider-Man/Daredevil team-up film.
- The Punisher
With Daredevil and the Kingpin back, could Jon Bernthal’s Punisher be far behind? The character did start out as a Spider-Man villain way back in “The Amazing Spider-Man” #129, after all, so it’s not all that far-fetched. I always loved seeing the Punisher show up in Spider-Man’s comics, so to see him going after Spider-Man and later teaming up with Spidey in the same movie would be great to see!
- Mr. Ditkovich
At the end of “No Way Home”, Peter gets an apartment and is instructed on when the rent is due. Of course, the first thing I thought of was Mr. Ditkovich, and how could you not want to see the great Mr. Ditkovich return from the Sam Raimi trilogy?! If JK Simmons can return to the role of J. Jonah Jameson as a variant (and we’re all the luckier for his return), not to mention the return of the multiverse villains, who’s to say Mr. Ditkovich can’t? Bringing Elya Baskin back as the character would be a must!
And there you have it, my list of ten things I’d love to see in the next Spider-Man film! Be sure to tell me some of the things you want to see in the next Spider-Man movie in the comments below!
@Sthenurus
I see, thank you for your thought.
@Aqu@
Amber Heard is basically stuck in a trial with Jonny Depp. Pretty nasty stuff on both side apparently.
I think old guy doesn’t want her in the movie because
A) she tends to be cast in a lot of comic book movies (justice league, Aquaman)
B) she is controversial right now, so her roles are being cut. So if she is cast as a main character it could derail the entire movie.
If you’re referring to her quarrel with Depp (of which I read when googling before), the last few years I had more important issues than caring about gossip (not that I usually care). Otherwise I don’t have a clue.
Still, it would have been nice to have an answer to my question. I guess it doesn’t matter.
You don’t know anything about Amber Heard? Did Thanos blip you for the last few years?
I’m curious, why not?
I’m asking as someone who didn’t even know who Amber Heard was before googling her.
All this talk about the Multiverse, and particularly fan talk about a Sam Rami-Toby Maguire Spider-Man 4 has piqued my wishfull imagination.
So Tobey-Spidey said he and Mary Jane are getting by or something along those lines. What better place to debut The Amazing Spider-Girl. But please. for goodness sake, do not cast Amber Heard as Mayday.
