@ac:
Pretty sure this was during the first 10 (?) issues of the Mackie/Byrne reboot.
That sounds vaguely familiar. That happened after the clone saga right? I quit the comics for a while after the clone nonsense, i’ve read the stories between the clone stuff and JMS eventually, (I came back when JMS took over) but a lot of that time is a bit blurry in my mind.
@AC – The explanation in the comics was that the Wizard (Sandman’s former team member) was disgusted by his turn to a good guy and wanted “the old Sandman” back. He tried to explain it as if SM had a good personality and a bad personality and that he was just reestablishing the good one, but this made no sense since there had never been any hint of different personalities – it was just a man changing and growing.
You literally have SM begging Wizard not to do this. It’s mind control and torture and I can’t believe Marvel thought this was a good idea.
I think someone on the podcast once said this was Bob Harras’ idea because he wanted the old villainous Sandman back, but I’m not sure.
I couldn’t agree more about the Sandman. I didn’t care about this character either UNTIL he turned good, I even went and tracked down the thing issue where it happened, because I missed it when it came out. I don’t even remember what the explanation was for turning him bad, or if they even bothered.
As someone who read this in the realtime, I enjoyed Sandman’s evolution from villain to non-villain to Sable employee to hero. It was gradual and made complete sense for the character. Marvel deciding to undo that in one single issue is something I have never forgiven them for. It was so dumb.
Ok, ok – I’ll wear my glasses next time I respond…
I don’t know who anything about this Laden so I have no opinion on their art.
I don’t care one what of the other about Sandman. I just really hate Laden’s art. Always have.
I will never forgive Marvel for needlessly turning Sandman into a villain again. For no valid reason. Such a waste of years of character growth and development.
