Read’s Reads Mary Jane and Black Cat #5 Review

Mary Jane/Black Cat #5

I review the final issue of the Jed McKay mini series from a story that was over almost three months ago. While I enjoyed the conclusion to the story and the relationship between Mary Jane and Felicia. The ending leaves a bad taste in my mouth and keeps pointing out something is amiss with MJ.

  1. Thanks for another great review, Ryan!

I’m in agreement that this story is a mixed bag. As you said, McKay nails the dynamic between MJ and Felicia for the most part, but the ending falls completely flat. This is not a triumphant moment that fans are rooting for. I get that the story at hand wants it to be this cathartic, heart-warming family reunion, but I challenge anyone to find a single fan who says that “Awww, MJ’s back with Paul and the kids” is what they actually want for this character.

McKay absolutely crushed the “Beyond” one-shot with these two, but this bloated, forgettable story was definitely an inferior follow-up. It could have been condensed into a three-parter, or even another one-shot, back during “Dark Web” and would have been much more satisfying, I’d wager.

Oh well…into the long boxes goes another bland Marvel story that’s hardly even worth getting frustrated over, only to be brought back out when I feel masochistic enough to reread the Zeb Wells’ run decades from now if ever…

*sigh* Apathy continues to set in…

That said, the Crawlspace continues the trend of being echelons-more entertaining than the books themselves though, so at least I have that going for me!

Thanks again, Mr. Read! Viva Crawlspace!
