MARCO SPEAKS SPIDEY: Silk (2022) #1 REVIEW

I truly enjoyed Silk’s most recent adventure in last year’s series, which starred her facing off against a cat demon named Kasha. Silk was successful, as she stopped the monster from destroying the world… obviously, since we’re still here. And now 2022 is yet another new and exciting beginning for Silk, as she starts a new life and a new volume in her awesome legacy. I was also very excited to see more of her life as a journalist working for the Threats & Menaces site, on top of her superhero duties protecting New York City. Cindy Moon is a very charming and strong woman, and this new volume is very much well-deserved. I am hoping that this time around, her run can last longer to get us through the entire year.

SILKY SMOOTH!

PROS:

  • First of all, the art is amazing, and it has its own flavor and take on the star character. Here, in this new volume, we see a Silk that looks far more mature than her previous renditions. She appears a bit older, wiser, sharper, and in control… like a ninja! And I’m loving every single minute of it! The transformation as well, highlighting the teenage boy who got his life sucked out of him was also visually startling and shocking.
  • The issue provides an interesting commentary on the current generation and the fascination with social media, always living life through phones. On one hand, it is very encouraging to see the public really getting behind and cheering Silk on… but on the other hand, you can see her frustration over the fact that these younger people put even their own lives and safety on lower priority if it means gaining popularity and traction with their social media accounts. Silk, being away from the real world for so long, provides a very unique perspective on the state of the world in the here and now. So, while she may still be on the younger side of Marvel’s general superhero population, she still does hold many traditional values. And it was hilarious when she was asking why there is a pound sign before “Silk Rules” … officially making her the oldest young person in the world.
  • It’s always a bit weird when you see the world cheering on heroes like Silk, and you start to realize how hard Peter Parker had it back in the day. Things like this make you appreciate the journey of our classic heroes even more when you look back at it all.
  • I appreciate the little bits and small lessons we get about Korean culture and language. Be sure to take down some notes when reading this issue so you can practice later on.
  • Silk looked just so comfortable resting with her face-mask on. Maybe I’ll try it out later tonight. Maybe a rut is just what the doctor ordered. Silk shouldn’t be complaining about being in one, but it is a quirky existential crisis for a superhero to have in this day and age, where everything is so fast-paced and chaotic.

CONS:

  • I feel like they could have still squeezed in some more action to start things off with a bang, but maybe they are saving that for next issue.

FINAL GRADE: A

This is going to be an epic year for Silk, and I am just so excited to see what happy mess she gets into next. Like I said when I reviewed the previous volume, Silk has the potential to be the next big thing, not only for the Spider-Man family, but for the Marvel Universe in general. This is yet another big step forward for her as a character, and as a household name.
