Story: Part 3 of this story picks up with Felicia in a black void. There she meets a man that looks like The Black Fox. But this isn’t the Fox but someone calling himself, Magic. Magic is the powers of Yggdrasil in human form. He takes Cat’s mind on a journey while her body is in the real world with full on god mode, and fighting off the Symbiote Dragons above the city. Back in her head Magic asks her about times she felt powerless. Felicia remembers when her mom told her a lie about her dad dying in a plane crash, When she was caught in the middle of The Owl and Otto’s gang war, When she desperately went to Kingpin for superpowers, and ultimately when Venom attacked her searching for Peter way back in the McFarland Era.

As Goddess Cat continues fighting the dragons Dr. Strange is finally waking up. Strange’s ghost dog, Bats fills him in on the situation at hand. Strange thou is worried about Black Cat. Cause the Branch of Yggdrasil is the raw powers of creation. Felicia is right now a magical nuclear bomb that in one wrong move could be a worst danger then the current Knull Invasion. Another problem is Strange and Felicia’s crew can’t be the ones that take the branch away from her, it must be her own will power that turns down the godly temptation. That detail has our boy Strange extremely worried knowing Felicia.

Magic wanting Cat to not to say no, and just live more. He makes Hardy watch a twisted version of “Let’s Make a Deal”, where behind every door is what these powers of raw creations can give her. The ability to destroy her enemies like Otto, Kingpin, and Venom. She can basically be the new Thanos controlling the Infinity Stones to give her the respect of the heroes of Marvel Universe, and bring her parents back from the dead. Finally she can have all her exes begging at her feet like love sick puppies. This image of her many lovers at her side, including Peter and Flash is finally enough to snap her out of it. Cause if she is going be loved by them again it’s not going be cause a magic spell. She attacks Magic, freeing her from the temptation. Which even Doc Strange didn’t think Hardy of all people would be able to do. Now it’s go time with Dr. Strange and a powered up Black Cat ready to take on incoming threat.

Grade: B+

I really liked this issue. For one as a Tokusatsu fan. This issue reminds me a lot of the series Kamen Rider Gaim. In which a mysterious god like being offers the hero of the show the godly powers of creation and destruction, and the evil corporation in that show is even called “Yggdrasil”.  I also really love how we get to the heart of Felicia. From reliving her darkest moment and regrets, to how if when tempted by absolute power. She doesn’t want it the easy way, but she will take it for herself. I’m loving all this current Black Cat stuff as I’m slowly forgetting her “Queen-pin” days under Slott’s pen.  Anyways it’s an awesome read, and can’t wait for more. Until next time Friendos!

  1. Wonderful review James!

This mini-series is probably one of the best tie-ins to king in black. It uses the event to further the character and build upon history rather than just coming to a screeching alt waiting for the cross-over to be over.

Felicia is also written superbly; she is strong, capable and display great leadership. As you pointed out, its a far cry from the poor characterization she suffered under slotts (but lets face it, not a single characters faired well under Slott…)
