MARCO SPEAKS SPIDEY: SPIDER-WOMAN #8 REVIEW

MOTHER AND DAUGHTER LOVE AHEAD

2021 continues to steer ahead strong, with even more powerful women taking over the Spidey brand and making their presence felt. It’s going to be quite a ride, joining Spider-Woman as she continues her search while breaking bad. It is quite intriguing to witness the lengths that Jessica will go just to reach her ultimate goal and end-game: the cure. But one point of contention moving forward will be the blurred lines that she is making for herself, and even crossing. Is it really wrong to be just a little bad?

In the BLUE Corner…

TITLE: Spider-Woman #8

STORY BY: Karla Pacheco

ART BY: Pere Perez

COVER BY: Jung-Geun Yoon, Dave Johnson, Javier Garron

STORY:

Jessica Drew has only one thing on her mind, and that is to find the cure. But the main question here really is asking herself to what extent is she willing to risk it all in order to achieve her goal… and what lines she is willing to cross. But whatever her decision is, her enemies have to be on the lookout for sure. They’re not going to have an easy day ahead, because Spider-Woman is forming an unexpected, uneasy but doubly entertaining alliance with none other than Octavia Vermis herself. But moving forward, readers can expect some morals being challenged, some tough decisions being made, and we’ll be left to see what is left in the aftermath of all this, if indeed the cure is finally achieved. This is made even more relevant when considering all roads lead to the High Evolutionary…

PROS:

  • In Spider-Woman issue 8, there is another girl-power face-off taking place, this time around involving Jessica Drew and her nemesis Octavia Vermis. These showdowns are always a blast to read!
  • Karla Pacheco, Pere Perez and the rest of the Spider-Woman team are very generous this issue with more than a couple major battles taking place, starting off with Jessica teaming up with Octavia against the Hydra Agents, a little skirmish with a certain dinosaur wearing a Savage Land shirt, and a head-butting affair with Rhodey, that looked way more painful than it probably actually was for Jessica.
  • With the huge surprise reveal at the end, of not only a daughter but a villain you’d say is very high on the evolutionary ladder, this issue leaves readers guessing what in the Spider-Verse will come next. This title gets two webby thumbs up for its lead-up to interesting relationships between mothers and daughters, the most volatile type of relationships in some cases.
  • Overall, the women in Marvel, and specifically, in the Spider-Verse, are providing solid entertainment, toe-to-toe action, and heavy, deep emotional baggage that all mixes into excellent story-telling.

CONS:

  • I just feel that more time could have been dedicated to the wonderful misadventures of Octavia and Jessica. As readers, we are just starting to fall in love with this new dynamic duo. One more issue would have been perfect to see the two in action, in filler episodes, before the big reveal of a certain young girl and the appearance of the High Evolutionary. You know something is going to hit the fan starting from here on out…
  • Jessica is always at her peak when she is doing top-secret black-ops type missions and activities. But perhaps I am jumping the gun, and this confrontation with the High Evolutionary will lead to more superspy escapades of the odd couple.

FINAL GRADE:

A+

It is a great honor and privilege that I will be able to share this new adventure with you weekly, Crawlspace family, as a staff member… but moreover, as a fan of everything Spider-Man related. See you all next week for more reviews!
