You shouldn’t ever shove anyone, but that face shove just seems unnecessarily cruel.

Cruel, but necessary. That shove caused Peter’s glasses to break, making him realize he doesn’t need them since he got his powers. Since the Lee/Ditko stories were told pretty much in “real time” (which Lee admitted in the letters column when he acknowledged that after 30 issues Peter had graduated high school and was off to college), this means that in this issue Peter had his powers for about 8 months, and yet he hadn’t noticed that he didn’t need his glasses anymore. You’d think he would have noticed this almost immediately. More likely Stan or Steve decided not to have him wear glasses at this point and just used his powers as an excuse to get rid of them.
Well, Peter did call him a loudmouth.
