I think the 70s added a lot of narrative sophistication to Spidey stories (and comics in general) but yes, the dialogue can be pretty cringe from a modern perspective. Personally, I think it adds an extra layer of fun to the proceedings, I enjoy randomly quoting some of the more naff lines to my friends (who must think I’m bonkers by now!)
@Andrew C: It doesn’t usually bother me that much. The only thing I find really annoying about the dialogue throughout the decades is when EVERY other WORD is emphasized FOR SOME reason.
This is my problem with Spidey stories from the 70s. There’s actually some good plots and characterization, but the dialogue is SO cringe they’re hard to get through. Books from the 60s have some dated dialogue too, but the 70s brought it to a whole new level. Then it got better again in the 80s.
