Sony and Disney Agree To More MCU Spider-Man

A few weeks ago it seemed like the Disney and Sony deal to have Spidey in the MCU had dissolved into dust just like Peter Parker in the final minutes of Avengers: Endgame. There were disagreements about what percentage of the profits Disney should receive for any sequel, and to what extent producer Kevin Feige, should be involved. Yesterday’s announcement that Feige was jumping on-board the Star Wars films seemed like a final nail on the coffin. However, Sony and Disney just announced a reconciliation, so MCU Spider-Man is back from the dead once again.

Late last night Marvel and Disney came to a deal to coproduce one more Spider-Man film for release within two years, and to have Tom Holland’s Peter Parker make at least one more guest-appearance in one of Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe films. As Variety reported…

The new deal was signed late on Thursday night. Negotiations involved top players from both studios, including Sony Pictures chief Tom Rothman, Feige and Walt Disney Studios co-chairs Alan Horn and Alan Bergman. In exchange for lending Feige’s producing prowess, Marvel and Disney will receive roughly 25% of the profits, according to insiders. Disney will retain its merchandising rights and will put up roughly a quarter of the financing. As part of the arrangement, Spider-Man will also appear in one future Marvel Studios film.

The film is scheduled for release on July 16, 2021. Amy Pascal will also produce through Pascal Pictures, as she has on the first two Holland-led films.

According to Deadline, Director Jon Watts is in talks to return to the series. They’re right now coming up with the final details of the contract. He would be the first solo director to tackle three MCU films, as this film will likely beat James Gunn’s third Guardians of the Galaxy to the screen, and the Russo brothers aren’t solo directors.

Tom Holland is pretty happy on Instagram, posting a clip from Wolf of Wall Street.

Zendaya celebrated on Twitter with a dancing Spider-Man gif.

Anthony D’Alessandro of Deadline notes that Sony and Disney are navigating a future with both studios making multiple superhero films in a shared universe.

We hear that as Sony progresses their own Marvel universe with titles likes Venom 2 and Sinister Six, and Disney/Marvel their own, there could be a “call and answer” between the two franchises as they acknowledge details between the two in what is would loosely be described as a shared detailed universe. Details on that are still early.

“This is terrific. Peter Parker’s story took a dramatic turn in Far From Home and I could not be happier we will all be working together as we see where his journey goes,” said Pascal. “This has been a winning partnership for the studios, the franchise and the fans, and I’m overjoyed it will continue.”

In the press release, Kevin Feige made a cryptic hint to the possibility of crossovers between the MCU Peter Parker and Sony’s other Spider-Man based intellectual properties such as Venom, Morbius and maybe even Madame Web.

He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.

  1. Hopefully they will finally make a Spider-MAN movie in the MCU instead of the Amazing Spider-Boy. Don’t get me wrong, I think Tom Holland is fine as Peter Parker, but his SM is too goofy and uncoordinated. The MCU arc must complete with him still being the nerdy Peter Parker, but a CONFIDENT Spider-Man. You know, what we read in the comics starting with Lee and Ditko…you know like always!

    Just sayin…

  2. I am one of the few here that have enjoyed the MCU Spidey movies and am glad to see this happen. The only thing I can see as a result of Sony going off on their own is that they would make movies that could not fit Spidey into the MCU anymore and that would be it. We would be stuck with a Spidey in the Venomverse or Morbiusverse.

  3. I’m not crazy about how Spider-Man was handled in the MCU or Venom having an origin story without Spider-Man so I really want all of this to go away. I’m glad they worked it all out because everything the films set up needs some closure. I am looking forward to the next iteration of a cinematic universe whenever that comes so we can have a Spider-Man who appears at the same time as the X-Men, Fantastic Four, Avengers, etc. if all goes. Ah well at least Spider-Man under Spencer and X-Men under Hickman are enjoyable again.

  4. I kind of saw this coming, and I’m glad that we’re now getting a proper follow-up to Far From Home. I don’t love the MCU’s take on Spider-Man, but I’d really like for one Spider-Man film series to be completed as intended. Plus, I’m honestly really curious to see how Marvel will handle that cliffhanger. Afterwards, I honestly wouldn’t mind if he never appeared in the MCU again, though.
