It was definitely a three month difference in the 80’s, i remember being a teenager checking the comic rack and it was a three month difference. First web of spider-man, then Amazing, and Spectacular was last, and then the month would change.
@Andrew: Your info about cover dates is correct, but I’ve found that from the early ’70s until around the late ’80s, there could sometimes be at least a 3 month difference between the cover dates and when the issues hit the stands. An issue of Marvel Age from around this time apparently lists January for the shipping and newsstand dates of this issue. Nowadays it does seem that comics are back to the two month difference.
In their drive to make Venom a sympathetic anti-hero, it seems old, brutal scenes like this with him killing civilians in cold blood is swept under the carpet and forgotten.
Also, small note… if cover date is May, then it was probably published in March (not Jan) as books are always dated 2 months ahead of release.
