Homecoming Sequel News: Gyllenhaal as Mysterio?

The Hollywood Reporter is… well, reporting!… that actor Jake Gyllenhaal is “in talks” to play Mysterio in the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel.

From the Hollywood Reporter:

Jake Gyllenhaal is ready to bring a little mystery to the Spider-Man universe.

The actor is in talks to play the classic Marvel villain Mysterio in the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming. Spider-Man creators Stan Lee and Steve Ditko introduced Mysterio in the comics in 1964. A special effects expert, Quentin Beck used his talents to create elaborate illusions to commit crimes and to fight Spider-Man.

The Homecoming sequel (Home At Last? Home For The Holidays? Yo Homes, Smell Ya Later?) is scheduled for a July 5, 2019 release.

  1. Instead of using his spider sense he’ll rely on not-Ganke to figure out which of Mysterio’s tricks is an illusion or real. Meh…

Ohh and he’ll be crying because he can’t call Tony for Help. Iron Man will probably cameo as a floating head of guilt.

  2. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was true, Mysterio seems like an obvious choice with how they seem to be going mostly for Spidey’s B-listers at the moment. If they adapt his original story where he frames Spider-Man and pretends to be a hero, it could lead to an interesting conflict and be the start of the public really hating him in the MCU (and hopefully bring in Jonah at last!) A villain like him would also be good for Peter’s development, forcing him to use his intellect to figure out his tricks.

If he does appear, I really hope they don’t change his costume too much, the fishbowl head look may be silly, but is so distinctive, and something so eccentric is just perfect for such a showoff.
