Spider-Man Crawlspace
PROUDLY PRESENTS
Greetings Crawlspacers! Welcome to the seventh edition to Spider-Man Cosplay! The article on the front page that deals with interviews that I conduct featuring people who cosplay in Spider-Man themed costumes. If it’s Spidey-themed and love for the character I’ll find it and publish here right on the front page!!
This edition we have a cosplayer by the name of Livicole Cosplay who dressed up as …
So let’s get started! What drew you into Spider-Man and when was that? What does Spider-Man mean to you?
I watched the cartoon show as a kid back in the 90’s, but it wasn’t until Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man film in 2002 that I REALLY got into Spider-Man. I was always more into anime and video games as a child, but the movie really opened my eyes to the world of superheroes and I fell in love with it. I guess that’s also why Spider-Man means a lot to me – because he was the first to introduce me to a new world.
Favorite Spidey writers and artists?
For artists, I always really enjoyed Humberto Ramos’ take on Spidey. I also love some J. Scott Campbell and there’s a lot of his images that I’ve tried to recreate in photo shoots! For writers, I love the old school David Michelinie comics!
Was there a favorite issue or story arc you like? Can you tell us why?
Probably my all time favorite would be “The Night Gwen Stacy Died”. I always loved Gwen, hence why she was the first Spider-Man character I cosplayed, and her dying was just such a huge deal to me. I also have to say, even if The Amazing Spider-Man films don’t get a lot of love, I really loved the way they did Gwen’s death scene – I can’t watch it without crying like a baby!
Is there any merchandise you hold dear to you that represents your love for the character besides your Cosplay?
I have a pretty decent sized action figure collection, and surprisingly no Spider-Man figures yet!! I need to fix that ASAP. So as far as favorite Spidey merchandise, I have a couple of really comfortable and cute sweatshirts that I wear all the time haha!
Speaking of which, let’s get into that! Gwen Stacy is one of your spider themed cosplay. What was that like designing the costume and did the costume present any hurdles to you when making it. What drew you into cosplaying that character?
Gwen was always one of my favorite Spidey girls, and when my fellow Spider-Man cosplayer and good friend (CosplayNay) was looking for a Gwen Stacy to do a shoot with, I hopped on the chance immediately! I decided to recreate the outfit Gwen wears during her death, since like I mentioned it’s one of my favorite stories and we wanted to try and recreate the death scene during the shoot. The outfit is pretty basic so it wasn’t hard to put together, however, that green coat was a headache! No one wears green peacoats!! It was super hard to find, I ended up buying like 3 different coats from Amazon and none of them fit what I was looking for, and then one day I got super lucky and found someone on an online thrift store selling the perfect coat for only $20!
You suited up for the first time and ready to walk on out of the floor. What was that like and how did that feel?
Being Gwen was a lot of fun for me. The first photoshoot I did with her was outdoors in Brooklyn with CosplayNay as Spider-Man and HollyPeppermint as Mary Jane, though, and it saddened me that a lot of people were stopping the two of them for photos and not me!! It felt like most people didn’t really know who Gwen was, and that upset me because she’s amazing! But that’s just me getting defensive over my girl haha. Overall, being Gwen was a really great time for me.
Sometimes a costume you cosplay as defines you, because you represent it so much. Has anyone ever called you “Gwen” while out of costume?
Sadly I haven’t worn Gwen too often and I don’t think she defines me at all to most people, so I’ve never been called Gwen out of costume. I’ve done other Spidey cosplays though, including Black Cat, and a ton of people have told me that I am Black Cat to them and that I should play her in movies haha! That really meant a lot to hear.
Any cool stories you wish to share while dressing up and walking around as Gwen Stacy?
Well, it doesn’t so much have to do with Gwen, but while I was in Brooklyn doing the previously mentioned photoshoot, we were at one point shooting near the Brooklyn Bridge, and there was a wedding party also taking photos there. When the wedding party saw CosplayNay dressed as Spider-Man, they got super excited and had their photographer take some shots with him! It was pretty funny to watch!
You have worked with other Spider-themed Cosplayers, is it fun getting together to do photoshoots?
Always!! And there might be a giant Spiderverse shoot in the works that I’m really looking forward to!
This is a Spider-Man site, but I’m sure people would like to know. What other cosplay costumes have you done?
A ton! I made over 25 costumes last year alone, including Poison Ivy, Catwoman, Ladydevimon from Digimon, Erza Scarlet and Eileen Belserion from Fairytail, Cubone, Zubat and way more. Most recently I completed a large armor build for a Night Elf Druid from WoW!
You don’t have to say Gwen Stacy, but which costume is your favorite to dress up as?
That’s a difficult one to answer… there’s so many costumes I love for different reasons and they all have their pros and cons! Gwen is very comfortable and I love wearing her just because I love her character, but Black Cat is also a lot of fun because you have to be sexy and confident while wearing her! I also really enjoy wearing my armor builds like my Night Elf Druid though, even if they’re uncomfortable, because I put so much work into them and I feel like such a badass!
Have you ever considered dressing up as another spidey themed character?
For sure!! As of right now, I’ve done Gwen, MJ and Felicia. I’d love to do more – maybe Spider-Gwen!
Have you ever heard or visited the Crawlspace (this site)?
A friend of mine only just introduced me to it, but I’m loving it so far and am looking forward to keeping an eye on it!
Do you listen to the Spider-Man Crawlspace Podcast?
I haven’t yet, but now that I know about it I definitely will!
Where can people find you online if they wanted to?
You can find me almost everywhere (Facebook, Instagram, Vero, Twitter, Tumblr) always as @LivicoleCosplay. I’m also opening up a print store soon which will be available at http://livicolecosplay.storenvy.com/ once opened!
