Spider-Man Cosplay #5! Featuring Mary Jane Watson! (Emmchu)!

Spider-Man Crawlspace
PROUDLY PRESENTS

Greetings Crawlspacers!  Welcome to the fifth edition to Spider-Man Cosplay!  The article on the front page that deals with interviews that I conduct featuring people who cosplay in Spider-Man themed costumes.  If it’s Spidey-themed and love for the character I’ll find it and publish here right on the front page!!

This edition we have a famous cosplayer by the name of Emmchu who dressed up as everyone’s favorite RED HEAD

ME: So let’s get started! What drew you into Spider-Man and when was that? What does Spider-Man mean to you?
EMMCHU: Contrary to many other Spider-Man fans, I haven’t been around since I was a kid. I got interested in Marvel through the MCU in the winter of 2015, and slowly I got more and more invested in the comic universe as well. The first spider comic I read was Spider-Verse!
ME: Favorite Spidey writers and artists?
EMMCHU: When we are talking artists, I’m quite a fan of Nico Leon’s work, and you can’t go wrong with Scottie young! I also thought Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley did an amazing job writing Spider-man Homecoming if we count that 😉

ME: Was there a favorite issue or story arc you like? Can you tell us why?
EMMCHU: I’m still a huge fan of Spider-Verse, but another favorite of mine is the Spider-Women event and the Miles Morales and Spider-Gwen team up!!

ME: Is there any merchandise you hold dear to you that represents your love for the character besides your Cosplay?
EMMCHU: I actually don’t own anything Mary Jane themed sadly. (Give me a Mary Jane Funko Pop, @Marvel!!!)

ME: Speaking of which, let’s get into that! Mary Jane is one of your spider themed cosplay. What was that like designing the costume and did the costume present any hurdles to you when making it. What drew you into cosplaying that character?
EMMCHU: Mary Jane was a very simple costume to put together. Originally I borrowed a red wig from a friend, ironed on the spider-heart and bought a pair of ripped jeans for her! Since she has evolved slightly, a new wig gave her a very different look. Nowadays I prefer doing her spinneret version over her casual style. I think from the start it was her personality that drew me in. Bright, strong, redhead woman with an attitude that could kick your ass and a smile and laugh that could light up your whole world!

ME: You suited up for the first time and ready to walk on out of the floor. What was that like and how did that feel?
EMMCHU: Spinneret is definitely different from some of the other ladies I’ve cosplayed over the years. On contrary to the others, the amount of confidence MJ radiates can be overwhelming! You have a lot to live up to!
ME: Sometimes a costume you cosplay as defines you, because you represent it so much. Has anyone ever called you “MJ” or “Mary Jane” while out of costume?
EMMCHU: I’m not very known for my MJ, and you’ll much often catch people calling me Gwen 😉

ME: What made you decide to dress up as everyone’s favorite Redhead?
EMMCHU: It was a combination of “matter of circumstance” and attraction to her character. I see a lot of myself in Mary Jane, both good and bad sides, and it was a fun way to express that.

ME: This is a Spider-Man site, but I’m sure people would like to know. What other cosplay costumes have you done?
EMMCHU: I’m definitely most known for my Spider-Gwen Portrayal, which has been my obsession over the past one and a half year. I’ve also for a while been doing Peggy Carter, the MCU heroine that got me hooked on Marvel. Besides that I have done Captain Marvel, Rogue, Supergirl, Rey from Star Wars, and D.VA from Overwatch among others. I’m currently in the process of making Gwenpool, which I am sure is gonna be an exciting project!

ME: You don’t have to say Mary Jane, but which costume is your favorite to dress up as?
EMMCHU: Spider-Gwen definitely tops my list! I feel very comfortable as her, as she is probably the marvel character I can relate the most to.

ME: Have you ever considered dressing up as another spidey themed character?
EMMCHU: I’m hoping to do both Gwenom, Silk, Mayday Parker and another MJ spider version in the future 😉

ME: Have you ever heard or visited the Crawlspace (this site)?
EMMCHU: I hadn’t heard of them till now!

ME: Do you listen to the Spider-Man Crawlspace Podcast?
EMMCHU: Not yet, but definitely need to check it out!

ME: Where can people find you online if they wanted to?
EMMCHU: On Instagram @emmchu is the easiest place to find me, though I also have a Facebook page @emchu cos
ME: Thank you for doing this!  It was a pleasure to interview you.
EMMCHU: Sure thing! Catch ya on the flip side.
Check back here in the future Crawlspacers when Emmchu and I, sit down again and discuss her Spider-Gwen cosplay!
