Hat tip to our own Shaun Martineau for bringing this to our attention. Sony has apparently cast Tom ‘Bane’ Hardy to star in their recently announced Venom film, directed by Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, 2009). From Variety:
Although the studio has been meeting with directors for some time, the actor selection process sped up after Hardy exited J.C. Chandor’s action-thriller “Triple Frontier,” and Sony saw an opportunity to go after an in-demand talent.
Fleischer showcased his ability to bring together dark themes and humor in “Zombieland,” and according to sources, Hardy is a huge fan of Venom. Hardy’s only previous film in the superhero genre is 2012’s “The Dark Knight Rises,” in which he played another baddie, Bane.
Scott Rosenberg (“Jumanji”) and Jeff Pinkner (“The Dark Tower”) will write the script for “Venom,” with Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach producing the movie, along with Amy Pascal. Palak Patel and Eric Fineman are overseeing the project for Columbia Pictures.
Back in the day, before the disappointing performance of Amazing Spider-Man 2 and email hacks, Sony had a lot of internal discussion about Tom Hardy as Sandman in a Drew Goddard-directed Sinister Six, aiming it to be like ‘the Sex Pistols.’ None of that ever came to fruition.
I continue to remain skeptical that this even gets made and will believe it’s happening when I see the first set production pics. Same with the Silver Sable/Black Cat buddy movie.
–George Berryman!
Great casting, but as you guys said, the movie can’t work without Spidey in it
Great casting choice… too bad it’s for the wrong film! Seriously, how terrifying would it be seeing the inexperienced teen Peter of the MCU go up against a Venom every bit as intimidating and physically imposing as his comic book counterpart?
The guy who played a character hooked on Venom will now play the actual Venom
Remember when they did that Catwoman movie with Halle Berry, that had no connections with Catwoman’s origin, Batman, Selina Kyle, or even Gotham City for that matter?
Remember how the fans said it was gonna suck and it turned out to be worse than we all thought it was gonna be and how the studios wanted us to quickly forget about it once they saw the reviews and flop at the box office?
The oscars even made fun of this movie by calling it a ‘Tragic Loss”. Isn’t history suppose to teach us not to repeat stupid and embarressing mistakes?
I still don’t want this movie to happen if Spider-Man’s not gonna be involved at all, but Tom Hardy is a great choice for Eddie, and I like the director.
You can do a Venom movie without Spider-Man, but I don’t see how you can do his origin without it. He’s got a giant spider on his chest and everything. And they’re probably gonna go the ultimate route of cancer goop, and I’m not a fan of that either.
I’m still extremely wary of this, but I’m such a big Venom fan that there’s no way I’m not gonna see it if it happens, so I still want this to be the best movie it can be, and I like what I’m seeing right now.
