The New Spider-man Game Looks Epic: Here’s What We Know So Far

2017 is going to be a fantastic year for Spider-Man fans. Not only is there set to be the biggest Peter Parker-based movie yet with Spider-man: Homecoming, we are also going to be treated to the most in-depth, detailed and visually stunning Spider-Man game to date. A Marvel spokesman has revealed that the offering from Insomniac Games will be one of the “best games on the platform,” which is a bold but very promising statement. The title, simply named Spider-Man PS4 (see trailer below) doesn’t have an official release date yet, but Ryan Penagos, the Marvel Digital Media vice president recently tweeted that the game would definitely be out in 2017.

Aside from a couple of pretty entertaining Spider-Man online slots from Playtech, gamers haven’t been treated to a good web slinger-based game since Spider-Man:Shattered Divisions way back in 2010. A new game is long overdue, and it’s a good job that one is in development this year. Especially seeing as how Playtech have now been told that they have to pull all their Marvel-themed slots off the market. It is thought that this is to do with Disney’s involvement with the Marvel franchise, and they don’t want their image to be associated with gambling. Despite the news that Playtech cancels popular slot games like Fantastic Four, they have taken some of the great features from them and rebranded them under different titles such as Furious 4. As yet, they haven’t come up with a Spider-Man alternative, though.
But that shouldn’t matter because gamers will soon be treated to playing as the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Spider-Man games have frequently received high ratings from respected games reviewers in the past, with 2004’s Spider-Man 2 picking up a score of 4.5/5 from Emuparadise. And with the advanced engine of the PS4 there is potential for a current game to raise the bar massively. It will be made with the Insomniac Game Engine and is an open-world epic similar to Rocksteady Studios’ Batman: Arkham Knight (see video below).

The developers have also confirmed that the game will not be an origin story and will feature an already well-established web slinger. This means that it will not be a direct replica of the current movie as the previous Activision titles in the past have been. This is great news for Spider-Man fans because it means they can enjoy two entirely separate adventures this year. The game will focus on both Peter Parker and Spider-Man elements of the character, though the main villains are yet to be confirmed.
The excitement doesn’t stop with Spider-Man, though. Jay Ong, the vice president of Marvel Games has recently hinted that Spider-Man will be the first of many adventures of Marvel comic book characters on next generation consoles. No details have been confirmed as yet, but the idea of playing as these amazing characters on advanced games platforms is a tantalizing prospect to say the least.

  1. Agreed Borvoc. The only place a giant white spider emblem should show up is on the iconic black symbiote suit. Hopefully the awful costume shown in the trailer will change to the more classic look by the time the game is actually released.

You mean at least 70% driving in the Spider-Mobile?

  3. lol @ “Spider-Man: Shattered Divisions”. Don’t forget Edge of Time and the ASM games! Now if only they’d get rid of the silly white spider emblem suit, or at least relegate it as an unlockable costume. The classic suit or some very close derivation of it needs to be what shows up on the promotional materials and be what the player sees when first turning the game on. It just doesn’t feel like Spider-Man if you’re not starting with his classic suit. It would be like if the first Batman Arkham game had batman wearing a suit with a giant white bat emblem. Everyone would wonder why it didn’t look like Batman, and it wouldn’t have the authentic feel of a Batman game.

I like, however, that this is not a movie tie-in. Maybe we can get a more authentic and mature Spider-Man (though the suit would not indicate this). I also like that the game is supposed to focus at least partially on Peter Parker. After all, it’s the man under the mask that makes the mask interesting. It’s also nice to think that this is the first of many Marvel games. However, that depends on how good this ends up being. Too many people these days seem to count their cinematic universes before they hatch. Just focus on what’s in front of you and make sure it’s the best it can be. The sequels, tie-ins, and spin-offs will come or not depending on what precedes them.
