USA Today has an article up today
speaking with Spider-Man: Homecoming director Jon Watts, co-producer Eric Hauserman Carroll and Michael Keaton, who plays Adrian Toomes/the Vulture.
There are some potentially minor spoilers below so here’s your Spider-Trigger Warning.
Co-producer Carroll went into more detail about the Vulture. For Spider-fans enjoying Spider-Man becoming a satellite hero (maybe even a sidekick) for Tony Stark and his stories, there’s a great nugget:
Toomes “has a bone to pick” with Iron Man’s high-profile alter ego, says co-producer Eric Hauserman Carroll, and “sort of becomes the dark Tony Stark”: He and his crew — including the Shocker (Bokeem Woodbine) and the Tinkerer (Michael Chernus) — use scavenged alien artifacts and stolen advanced tech to put together amazing weaponry to sell to other criminals. “He thinks once he has this money and power, he’ll have more control of his life,” Carroll adds. However, it doesn’t take too long before they get on the radar of their friendly neighborhood Spider-Man (Tom Holland).
Keaton goes into a bit more detail:
“Some people see themselves as victims — he sees himself a little bit like that,” Keaton says of Toomes. “He probably would have a strong argument that he never got a fair shot — a lot of ‘Why not me? Where’s mine?’”
So Toomes’ problems are with Tony Stark, and he becomes “dark Tony Stark.” Director Watts spoke about the Vulture and revealed his M.O. – he picks through things looking for the valuable stuff. Like a scavenger.
Plus, with his new baddie Watts gets to use “this neat junk from all the other movies,” he says. “It’s a really great starting point for the villains to have the Vulture picking over the stuff and finding the valuable exotic elements and having the Tinkerer assemble into something that could be used.”
Some of you may remember the endless barrage of teasers, trailers, trailers for teasers, teasers for trailers, trailers for trailers and teasers for teasers leading up to Amazing Spider-Man 2. Sony looks to be returning to form, today releasing a seven second teaser for a second Homecoming trailer arriving tomorrow.
The teaser (posted below) shows some sort of small robot which may or may not be a Spider-Tracer (no word yet on who creates it, Peter or Stark) and then a blink and you miss it moment of fighting between Spidey and the Vulture.

It’ll be interesting to see how divisive this movie ends up being for the fandom, though I expect the general populace and the general Spider-fans will enjoy it overall.
@Al – I think the Vulture’s lines in this trailer indicate he’s going to pretty different from Stark, outside the hi-tech armor he’s sporting.
I don’t think any of Tony’s villains in past movies were as distinctly blue-collar as they seem to be portraying Toomes here.
I blame Feige for the creative missteps, same as I did with Dr. Strange.
What’s sad is I don’t think it’s Sony’s fault this time. Despite some claims made by Amy Pascal, hasn’t Kevin Feige confirmed they have creative control?
This is what happens when you promote people who fundamentally misunderstand what makes the character who he is ( Joey Q )as Creative Officer, I suppose.
I’m sure it’ll make gangbusters. It may be a great movie, but I doubt it’ll be a great Spider-Man movie. Just like how Captain America 3 was a solid film, but not a great Cap movie.
Remember back when we found out Spider-Man was gonna be in the MCU and we all took it to mean that he’d be getting the same treatment for high quality comic book movies that most of the other MCU films got plus every so often there would be a cameo from the wider MCU or Spidey would be in an Avengers movie but fundamentally these still would be Spider-Man movies telling Spider-Man stories?

Now drink up to the Vulture being evil Tony Stark 4.0 instead of the Vulture

Maybe, and this is a big maybe, the use of the prototype suit in the climax means that this story will be, in part, about Peter getting out of Tony’s shadow from Civil War and becoming his own man. Sucks about Adrian Toomes being turned into an Iron Man villain though. Bah!

It’s why I’m really happy to see him using his prototype suit in the final fight with Vulture and Shocker, since it means he won’t be using the Stark-Tech and will only have to rely on his powers, his wits, and his web-shooters (the one thing he actually made in these movies).
When we heard Spidey was coming to the MCU did ANYONE actully want “MCU SPIDER-MAN THE MOVIE” as oppose to “A Spider-Man movie that is part of the MCU and thus will probably have their stamp of quality”?
Like seriously I never wanted a Spider-Man movie with MCU plot elements in it so much as the talented people who made the best damn Captain America film to do for Spidey what they did for Cap.
But screw that i guess. Lets make the Vulture an exclusive Spider-Man villain an(other) evil Tony Stark

The more I see of Stark’s influence on Peter in this movie, the more unsatisfied I feel with MCU Spidey. Tom Holland’s great in the role, but I hate how Stark makes almost everything that Peter made in the comics. It’s just disrespectful to Peter’s resourcefulness and genius in the comics.
I don’t think we need to turn the Spider-Tracer into a Spider-Drone, not to mention it’s probably going to be another Stark addition to the suit that’s already got tons of “bells and whistles” with no input from Peter.
But this should make you happy George…it looks like Spidey is going to fight Vulture and Shocker at the end in his prototype suit, so no Stark-Tech.

So the main villain of a Spider-Man movie will be a dark Tony Stark who doesn’t sound much like anything to do with the Vulture and is rooted in other MCU crap as opposed to Spider-Man stuff.
Again this is an ‘MCU Spider-Man movie’ as opposed to ‘A Spider-Man movie set in the MCU’
I feel like based on Peter’s reaction in that clip, it’s a surprise to him, and yet another gadget Stark made for him.
