Trailers are a funny thing. Sometimes they can show you a lot without you realizing how much you saw, because you’re hung up on the “Daaaw!” moment of Baby Groot pointing at doomsday buttons. Other times, they can reveal way too much and leave you thinking “Did I basically just see the movie in under three minutes?”
If you’re triggered by spoilers, don’t watch the trailer below. I’ll add some thoughts about it below the embedded video.
- The trailer more or less confirms rumors circulating the last week that at some point arch-villain Tony Stark would be taking away Spider-Man’s snazzy new Stark Spider-suit.
- Ganke Ned is around more; still feels out of place. As I stressed on the podcast, high school age Peter should not have anyone to confide his troubles to or anyone that knows his secret ID. Being “on his own” so to speak at a young age is part of what made him the independent hero he became before Slott & Brand New Day regressed his maturity back to middle school.
- We see what appears to be Liz kissing Peter at *a* homecoming dance. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is a swerve that may not even make it into the film. Instead, I have fully subscribed to the theory by Spectacular Mike and Brad that Zendaya is in fact playing Mary Jane (in a “Haha! Gotcha!” moment that will fall flat) and that Sony will double down on it the way they did on their Ghostbusters Twitter account, where they prodded and trolled and stoked the furnace of social justice – for PR that in the end didn’t do a bit of good for that sinking ship.
- One new Aunt May moment, one recycled from the previous trailer
- If Stark takes away the tragically designed Stark Spider-Suit and Peter winds up basically fighting the final villains in Scarlet Spider Hoodie & Sweats, it will be an even worse Spider-fashion mess than the first Andrew Garfield Spider-Man film.
- Oh look! A ship is in danger! Spidey is saving them because Spidey! And… oh wait, no, it’s Iron Man. *sigh*
- It bugs me that Marvel is chaining Spider-Man to Tony Stark; I’ve been vocal about that. But I am wondering now about the fallout and what that would do to him wanting to join the Avengers. Sorry, but I prefer my Spidey tough and independent. It’s always how he’s worked best. Additionally, he doesn’t have to be an Avenger to be in Avengers: Infinity War. The Guardians of the Galaxy are popping up in it and they’re not Avengers; anything’s possible.
- That Michael Keaton tho! He’s easily the strongest and most intriguing part of this whole deal.

At this point, I’m resigned to the fact that I may not like this film, but and I’m going to just sit back and see how it fits in with DisneyMarvel’s overall MCU scheme.
To say my expectations for this movie are low is putting it very generously.
I think George was also right when he said awhile back that the closest we’ll probably ever get to a proper rendition of Spider-Man on a movie screen was Sam Raimi’s trilogy of films.
Just watched it. IMHO it showed nothing new from the previous trailer. Except from the cringe worthy “i’m noting without this suit” line, but then it balanced out with Spidey growing some balls and fighting Vulture without Stark suit. Due to the Avengers crossover, i’m really not digging this movie, and this trailer did not change my opinion whatsover.

Eh. I’m still decided to give this movie a chance.
I know lots of people in this sites don’t like the trailers about how “Iron Man ruining the Spider-Man movie” or “Spider-Man is now Side-kick”; but I still want to give a movie a fair chance to see if the movie use Iron Man well enough to give him some cool scenes while focusing the entire movie dedicated to Spider-Man.
Also, this is not an actually the first Spider-man trailer to seems spoil the entire movie, back in 2004, Spider-Man 2 trailer actually shows lots of overall plots of the movie (Peter’s Struggle, Birth of Doc Ock, Peter’s Quit as Spider-Man and his come back).
Nah tnr, the Osborns need a bit of a rest cinematically speaking, at least for a bit. Norman certainly but even Harry. They’ve been damaged after Marc Webb’s ASM movies. Also, and I say this with a little pride – on the podcast I have always said that the Vulture could be a very sinister villain in the hands of the right writer. For all its other obvious failings, Spider-Man: Homecoming may finally prove me right on that. I’m fine with Toomes getting his shot, and Keaton in the trailers has this sort of menace that is palpable and real. I really cannot wait to see him as the Vulture. I think he’s gonna knock it out of the park. Conversely, it may have Marvel give Toomes a second look and maybe let him level up in the menace department. Hopefully something like that could happen in the new Zdarsky book so as not to interrupt Slott’s ongoing Doctor Octopus fanfic in ASM.
Peter should not have a friend at the onset of his heroic career. Aside from jawing back and forth with the Human Torch (without the Torch knowing who Spidey was under the mask) he didn’t really have a friend until he met Harry, and even then that was strained sometimes on account of girls & pills.
One thing the films have missed out on, across the board, is the evolution of Flash Thompson from a bully to someone Peter considers a friend and someone to talk to. That would’ve been interesting.
In a Perfect World, as you say, sure – he’d have Harry, Liz, MJ, Glory, Randy, etc. That’s not impossible to have, they just haven’t tried it.
What would have strengthened my interest was a film focused on Spider-Man, without Tony Stark. Having a crush on Liz? That’s fine; it’s consistent. There’s basis for that in his early days and since we’re not getting a Daily Bugle or Jonah – AGAIN – we can’t really have Betty yet. There shouldn’t be anything between Peter and Liz in the long run. It wouldn’t feel right. Ganke/Ned shouldn’t be in this.
@George I was going to wait to ask this on the podcast, but since people here in the comments seem to agree with the sentiment… maybe this is the better place to ask it.
Do YOU think you’d prefer it if Keaton was playing Norman?
And what if instead of Ganke!Ned, we got Harry as the best pal and confidante.
BD argued that he’s needed, that in today’s world he’d have at least one friend. You rebutted that part of what Peter compelling is that he had no one to confide in.
Perhaps there’s away around that, where you can have both? If you had Harry instead of Ned, what would happen if Harry got killed coming between Spidey and the Goblin?
Norman has a personal reason to hate Peter, even if it was his own fault. Peter has a reason NOT to have a close friend with whom he trusts his secret.
Obviously, they weren’t going to go back to the Osborn well so soon after ASM2. In a perfect world, though? We haven’t seen the film yet, so we can’t say if this armchair writing would be better…

Even if you had to shoe horn Stark, who wouldn’t love to see Norman hand him his ass? Especially if it was Keaton as Norman vs Downey Jr.

You’re right. I know you’re right. And I wish I were more excited about this than I am. I jumped for joy and fist pumped into the air in front of a hallway of students when one of them showed me the first clip of this Spider-Man in “Civil War” and it’s been downhill since. I am not trying to rationalize myself into thinking this movie will be great now or anything like that, but I admit that the idea of this story being one in which Spider-Man really becomes his own man after Robin-ing him to Stark in Avengers 2.5 is a step in the right direction. That and, as you’ve all said, Keaton’s Toomes are the first things since Civil War that have lifted my spirits in regards to this movie.

It’s not. Movie trailers routinely have moments that don’t wind up in the film. I also don’t say “this won’t be in the movie;” I clearly say “I’d be surprised if it makes it in,” then lay out the reasons why that’s my belief. It’s not at all baseless.

It was speculation. If it had a basis in fact, he wouldn’t bother to say it. Though why you’re certain Liz is the main love interest based on a few seconds of trailer clips I’m not sure. That’s clearly what they want us to assume, but fake clips go in trailers all the time for precisely this swerve.

You have no idea how Peter perceives love in this movie. They haven’t given anywhere near enough content to come to a conclusion.

Not sure why you bring this up. Liz’s casting and portrayal don’t seem to be a point of contention with anyone. It’s the Peter and Tony related content that’s stirring the pot.

This lane has ruined my hopes for hte movie and has made me noticeable more depressed today. (My wife commented)
I loved it. It washed away my worries that this wouldn’t be a Spider-Man story. I still think that Michael Keaton would have been a perfect Norman Osborn instead but oh well…

That’s pretty silly and baseless. The title is “Homecoming” and Liz is the main love interest. She was also the first love interest in the comics. We’ve seen Gwen and we’ve seen MJ (Well at least she was white like in the comics). So I think it was an intelligent move to reboot how this Peter perceives love. Maguire was a creepy stalker. Garfield was the cool kid that got the girl. This Peter is into BIG A* I mean…this Peter seems more genuine in how he reacts to having a crush. At least as presented in the trailer. I also like that his adventures as Spider-Man are having an effect on his confidence as Peter. (That is what happened in the comics.)
I think Marvel doesn’t want this new version of Peter to be predictable or dated. Love it or hated the world is more diverse now than it was in the 60s when everyone in comics was white. I’m fine so far with this portrayal of Liz. She isn’t one of the more interesting supporting cast members in the comics so I am fine with seeing how they retool their relationship.
I think she’ll do a fine job though. At this point she’s only playing an all american girl. If you ask me she has a bigger advantage than Tom Holland.

Like George said, though. Keaton looks delightfully sinister, easily the most intriguing part of this movie. In another world, I actually think he would have been good Norman/Goblin casting. Not that they could go back to the Osborn well so soon after ASM2.
Oh incidentally, let me put the RDJ Iron Man decision into perspective again from a business perspective.
I literally just watched the trailer for the first time a few minutes ago and my mother happened to be in the room with me.
She is your average movie watcher, and her casual reaction from over my shoulder was “Oh it’ll be good if he’s (RDJ Iron Man) is in it.”
She didn’t give a crap about the rest of the stuff in trailer, but she loved Iron Man.
Her comment on Micheal Keaton was “Is he a dragon fly? He looks cool”.
Tony Stark taking away the Stark Spider-suit may be a hidden blessing as it will help reinforce that Peter Parker is Spider-man whether he is wearing a high tech suit or a pair of sweat pants and goggles.
while I agree with George about wishing Stark was in the movie less or not at all I am beginning to think that they are using this relationship to show Peter becoming strong and independent as he goes against the wishes of his idol to do whats right even when he is striped of his fancy suit and is left with nothing and noone for back up.
also , dont worry that PC politics will sink this the way it did Ghostbusters. while this movie has definitely embraced diversity casting , it seems like it is honestly trying to make a movie for anyone to enjoy. Ghostbusters 2016 was ment to be political propaganda first and foremost and was made worse when cast and crew spent the better part of a year mocking and insulting Ghostbusters fans . I simply dont see Disney being as foolish in this regard as Fieg and his crew.
I said it before, Michael Keaton is the only reason I’m really interested in this movie. Vulture’s stock in the greater Marvel Universe is about to go up considerably I think.
The overall movie looks like it will be a lot of fun. I suspect I’ll the target audience of children will love it.

I hate how right you were about this George. I just can’t be excited for it, and that really upsets me.
I was open to Iron Man being in the movie after Brad pointed out how he’s like the MCU’s version of the fantastic 4, but the movie seems to revolve around Iron Man. He mentors him, saves the day, seems to be the motivator for the villain, and then takes the suit away. And his armor is even colored like the Ultimate Iron Man armor. Just what we need. More Ultimate Influence. Ugh.
And like you, I cannot stand that Not-Ganke is in this movie. Peter shouldn’t have someone to confide in. Not at this age.
The actual Spider-Man and Vulture parts look great, but that’s about all I can say positively about this trailer, and I’m sad about that.
And can we talk about the line “I’m nothing without the suit”? Because that’s a load of crap. Spider-Man is still Spider-Man when he’s wearing a paper bag on his head. I know he’s young, but still.
Luckily, it seems that this movie will be about Spider-Man getting out from under Tony’s shadow, and become more independent. If we’re really lucky, Spider-Man will beat the Vulture at the end, Tony will come crawling back with the suit, telling him he’s earned it, and Peter will tell him to piss off, and proceed to make his own actual Spider-man suit.
