Marvel Studios President Kevin “Recently Free of Ike Perlmutter” Feige is talking today about Spider-Man and his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Feige’s remarks came while promoting the Avengers: Age of Ultron BluRay.
Via IGN, on the agreement and Spidey’s role in the MCU:
“Making that agreement … was great, and was really amazing, and on a personal level making these movies, it means a lot because I think we can do great things with Spider-Man,” Feige said. “I think Spider-Man can serve great purpose in our universe and that’s where he belongs. That was what was unique about him in the comics was not that he was the only superhero in the world; it’s that he was a totally different kind of superhero when compared against all the other ones in the Marvel universe at the time.”

“This has been a dream of ours for a long time,” Feige said. “We always had contingency plans, which we always do anyway. Are we going to be able to make another deal with this actor? If so, we’re going to do this; if not, we’re going to do this. If we get the rights to a certain character, that’s great; we’re going to do this. If not, we’re going to do this. We always sort of operate under those various alternate timelines available and ready to shift if something happens.”
Feige also noted that “the most important thing as a standalone is relaunching Spider-Man in his own standalone movie with his own storylines that fits into this universe. That is job number one for us. … The connectivity is great, but it doesn’t drive the train.”
Via Collider, Feige talks Marvel movie & TV crossovers, getting them to happen and roadblocks:
“I think that’s inevitable at some point, as we’re plotting the movies going forward and they’re doing the shows. The schedules don’t always quite match up to make that possible—it’s easier for them, they’re more nimble and faster and produce things quicker than we do, which is one of the main reasons you see the repercussions of Winter Soldier or Age of Ultron in the show. But going forward, and certainly as they do more shows and cast them with such great actors as they have—particularly in Daredevil—that may occur. But the reality of it is by the time we start doing a movie, they’d be midway through a season then by the time the movie comes out they’d be done with the second and starting the third season, so finding timing on that is not always easy.”
Collider also had the following tidbit about the Kingpin, which makes me wonder even more if we’re not going to get a Daredevil/Spidey MCU crossover at some point:
Indeed, the casting of Daredevil has been excellent, and with talents like Krysten Ritter, David Tennant, and Carrie-Anne Moss being added to the mix for Jessica Jones, it makes sense that the MCU would want to take advantage of those actors existing in the same universe. And yes, Feige confirmed that the casting would carry over to the MCU—D’Onofrio is Kingpin in both the TV shows and the movies.

@7 – Yeah, I understand where you’re coming from. Those leaks really proved that Sony didn’t understand the character at all (like seriously, I felt dumber after I read their plans for Spidey), and I am glad that Spidey is going to be in the MCU. But as much as I want to be excited about all this news, I’m just really wary of them getting it wrong, if that makes sense.
@6 – I think you’re right regarding Marvel vs. Sony and how fans might be reacting But let me break it down this way, C-Spider.
The MCU stands out as a testament to how much Marvel Studios (I am being very specific here – the Studio, but certainly not Marvel publishing) gives a damn about their characters. Feige has earned my trust.
On the other hand, Sony proved they had no sensible direction for the character with Amazing Spider-Man 2. They worked hard to earn my distrust.
So yeah, either side could be making these sorts of statements and people will react different based on who is saying it – because I believe Marvel Studios can back it up. I would not have felt the same way with Sony.
Huh, I would’ve thought they were planning terrible things for Spider-Man. What else would they have done?
Just kidding, but seriously, I can’t help but feel more and more skeptical about MCU Spidey. I feel like if it was Sony making the same choices and statements for another reboot, people would be a lot less optimistic about this than if it was Marvel.

Personally, I wouldn’t want the film to be too influenced by Ultimate Spidey, but since a lot of folks love it, there will probably be more Ultimate in the film than I would like. D’Onofrio is pretty much the perfect Kingpin, so I’d really like to see him in a Spidey film, I hope Holland can hold his own against him.
It’s kind of too bad D’onofrio isn’t morbidly overweight. I really want the fat jokes from Ultimate Spider-Man on screen. Maybe we can still get it, he is pretty large compared to Holland
It’s not just you. If I see the MCU Spidey & MCU Daredevil going up against Kingpin I will freak the Hell out and die from fanboy overload. “Squeeee!” 😎
Is it just me that is excited about Kingpin potentially being in the movies too? D’Onofrio’s Kingpin was an absolute pleasure to watch. “Daredevil” was a masterpiece with him in it.
