November 2015 Spidey Solicitations with BD Commentary

Here are the Spider-Man comics coming out in November 2015. I’m going to add a bit of commentary to these solicits.

Amazing-Spiderman-VAR-a7fc2ASM2015003Cov-41b04AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #3
DAN SLOTT (W) • GIUSEPPE CAMUNCOLI (A)
Cover by ALEX ROSS
Variant Cover BY GABRIELE DELL’OTTO
• More of Spider-Man’s post-Secret Wars world revealed!
• Visit Parker Industries New York Headquarters, the building formerly known as the Baxter Building! The Human Torch is going to have something to say about that!
32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

BD Commentary: It’s always fun to see Spidey and the Human Torch team up, and we know Dan Slott writes them together very well. I’m still not digging the giant lite brite Spider symbol, but the two covers look great.

ASMONEPOINTONE2015001-77700AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1.1
JOSE MOLINA (w) • SIMONE BIANCHI (a/C)
Variant Cover A by ROBBI RODRIGUEZ
Variant Cover B BY TBA
The dead are walking in Harlem and Spider-Man’s going to do something about it. But when the trail leads straight to THE SANTERIANS, Spidey’s finds out he bit off more than he can chew. Television’s AGENT CARTER writer JOSE MOLINA and superstar artist SIMONE BIANCHI bring the heroes hidden since DAREDEVIL: FATHER back into the spotlight!
32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

BD Commentary:It seems the . 1 issues are sticking around. It’s a smart move because a title called Spider-Man: Father wouldn’t sell as well. I have zero interest in this book.

VENOMSK2015001-ACTFIG-VAR-532ce Venom-01-cover-149a5VENOM: SPACE KNIGHT #1

IN SPACE, NO ONE CAN HEAR YOU SCREAM…WITH EXCITEMENT!
Flash Thompson is a lot of things. Soldier. Veteran. Doubleamputee. Host to a powerful alien symbiote. Now, apart from the GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, Flash has also been tasked with being an intergalactic ambassador of Earth and an Agent of the Cosmos. What does that mean? It means Flash Thompson will be what he’s always wanted to be: A BIG. DAMN. HERO. It’s high adventure in deep space as Venom swashbuckles his way across the universe!
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

BD Commentary:I dig the action figure variant covers. However, a Venom Space Knight title is not something I’ve been wanting after reading his brief appearances in Guardians. Am I the only one that misses Venom as a villain?

40 PGS./Rated T+ …$4.99

BD Commentary: If you enjoyed the Spider-Verse Secret Wars mini series I’m sure you’ll like this book. I’m happy to see a monthly update on Spider-Ham. I haven’t had that since I had a subscription to his Star Comic. I also remember his backup stories in Marvel Tales.

Spider-Man!

Issue #2 – 32 PGS./RATED T+ …$3.99

BD Commentary: It seems Miles is wasting no time in getting set up in the 616 universe. I’m curious about this book. This can’t be the main book is it?

ISSUE #2 – VARIANT COVER BY CLAYTON CRAIN
Get ready to scream! Carnage, the homicidal symbiote is back, and he’s leaving a trail of bodies behind him. The FBI is hot on his trail, with a different playbook since their serial killer is a super villain. They’re equipped with the latest sonic tech and a team including military hero/astronaut John Jameson and a reformed Eddie Brock/Toxin! But when Carnage escapes into an abandoned coal mine, the FBI’s plan is starting to look like a trap… for THEM!
32 PGS. (each)/Rated T+ …$3.99 (each)

BD Commentary: Spidey legend Gerry Conway is writing Carnage. It’ll be interesting to see his take on the character. I’m not sure Carnage can hold his own book, but I like the support cast Conway has assembled with John James and Eddie Brock. I’ll be picking this one up.

SILK2015B001-Cov-e88fdSILK #1
ROBBIE THOMPSON (w) • STACEY LEE (a)
Cover BY HELEN CHEN
HIP-HOP VARIANT COVER BY TBA
Variant Cover by TBA
SILK IS BACK AND BADDER THAN EVER!
• Cindy Moon has been working to find the missing members of her family since she escaped the bunker that was her home prior to the events of SPIDER-VERSE. But her quest has taken her down a darker path than she expected, and she’s now in cahoots with none other than the most ferocious feline in the Marvel Universe – BLACK CAT!
• What’s gotten under her skin, and is there any redeeming the SINISTER SILK? !
32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

BD Commentary:I was pleasantly suprised how good the previous volumn was when I read it. Thompson does a good job of humanizing the character, much better than Slott did where she was very unlikable in my opinion.

SPIDERGWEN001-cvr-738e5SPIDER-GWEN #0
JASON LATOUR (W) • ROBBI RODRIGUEZ (A/C)
• GWEN STACY: SPIDER-WOMAN! In one universe, it wasn’t Peter Parker bitten by the radioactive Spider, but Gwen Stacy! She’s smart, charming and can lift a car – Just don’t tell her Police Chief father! This special reprint of the top-selling EDGE OF SPIDER-VERSE #2 comes packed with bonus material including script pages, sketches and more!
48 PGS./Rated T+ …$4.99

BD Commentary:In case you missed her first appearance.

Variant Cover by CLIFF CHIANG
• The Lizard is loose!
• As if that wasn’t bad enough, Spider-Gwen finds herself on SHIELD’s most wanted list!
32 PGS./Rated T+ …$3.99

BD Commentary:I was a bit underwhelmed by the previous volume. Here’s hoping Latour knocks it out of the park writing his second, second issue of the title.

GARGAL2015002var-db09bGUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #2
BRIAN MICHAEL BENDIS (W) • VALERIO SCHITI (A)
Cover by ARTHUR ADAMS
Variant Cover BY KRIS ANKA
• Meet Emperor Quill and his Imperial Guard.
• What brings the Guardians into their crosshairs?
32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

BD Commentary: The Thing is one of my favorite characters in the Marvel Universe. I feel Bendis enjoys him too, but he really didn’t do much with him in his Avengers run. I think Ben, like Spider-Man, brings out the best in the charaters he’s arround. So I’ve got high hopes for him joining the team. As you can see by the cover, Venom is in the background. I’m sure he’s doing the same in the book.

SM20992015003-Cov-ee9ecSPIDER-MAN 2099 #3
PETER DAVID (W) • WILLIAM SLINEY (A)
Cover by FRANCESCO MATTINA
Variant Cover BY RICK LEONARDI
• The dangerous DOCTOR CRONOS continues to put innocent people in harm’s way, and Miguel O’Hara AKA SPIDER-MAN 2099 is the only one who can stop him.
• Even in his new duds, though, Miguel’s still in for the fight of his life!
• What strange connection does Doctor Cronos have to the year 2099 – and will he put a stop to Miguel’s attempts to right the timeline once and for all?!
32 PGS./Rated T …$3.99

BD Commentary: Consistently one of the best Spider-Books on the market. I’m not 100% sold on the new costume, but otherwise this should be on your pull list.

  1. Great work on the Solicitations, but you missed.

Howard Duck #1 , the cover shows not only Spidey, but Aunt May as well and from the looks of it, sh has joined his detective agency and not only that she backed Wheat Cakes.

  2. @#4: But Venom DOES fit into that mould. Venom the Eddie Brock version only became morally grey due to them making him an anti-hero for the purposes of giving him a solo-series. Fundamentally he was someone who believed himself to be good but was actually bad and twisted. He is a black and white villain who got messed up.

  3. I don’t have any interest in ASM #3 (721). I’d rather buy the .1 issue. Sure the whole ‘.1’ numbering gimmick is stupid, but who cares? It dosen’t really matter if If this is a good Spider-Man story.

Hey! What’s wrong with Venom being a good guy? If anything, it’s better than the same old “we are evil alien symbiote and we are going to make our host do evil things”.

    Gotta pick up SPIDER-MAN 2099 #3.

When will the new all ages “SPIDEY” series come out? I bet it’d be much more interesting than the Marvel Cartoon Universe Spider-Man comics.

  4. I’m glad you all liked the commentary. Stillanerd used to do these, and I miss him doing them. This post takes a lot of time to get all the images and text lined up etc. I wanted to add the commentary to make them different than what you’d find on CBR or Newsarama.

  5. So… what happened to Mile’s book? Didn’t he get a new #1 in October? Where’s his 2nd issue?

  6. Add me to the list of those that like the commentary by BD. Please make this a regular feature on the solicits posts.

“Does anyone buy this book?” I think Kevin once said something like “If Marvel is putting out a Spider-Man related book that Brad Douglas is not picking up, then they have failed.”

  7. I like the commentary BD. Really adds to reading the solicits on the site :).

I also like how Slott tends to handle Peter and Johnny’s relationship, though I hope that the issue with Peter’s company taking over the Baxter Building doesn’t lead to a big riff between them. The best save Peter can make is that, with his relationship and connection to the FF, he was the best option to take it over before anyone else could get their hands on it. Still makes you worried about what’s going on with the FF.

There’s a lot less about this new .1 series/issue that makes me want to get it compared to how Spiral was advertised. The most this has going for it is that it has a writer from Agent Carter involved in it, but I don’t see how that translates well to Spidey compared to, say, Agent Carter writers on Captain Marvel.

I do miss Venom as a villain, and Brock in the suit, though I didn’t realize how much I did until his appearance in Renew Your Vows. Not that I dislike Flash in the role, though I feel he has more potential as a normal guy in Pete’s supporting cast, and I’m hoping his new book is fun.

I think ANAD Avengers is actually supposed to be the main Avengers book, or at least, on equal ground with Uncanny, New, and Ultimates. Though I’ve seen it referred to as the flagship book.

I’m not going to buy Carnage, but the premise is very interesting and it’s nice to see John and Eddie playing a prominent role in something again.

I know where you’re coming from with Silk Brad. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine I would enjoy that book as much as I have, or actually look forward to the relaunch, especially after Slott’s handling of the character. All credit to Thompson and Lee for actually making Cindy likeable, and I’m very interested in this new direction and Black Cat’s involvement.

I certainly wasn’t “wowed” by volume one like I was for the original Edge of Spider-Verse issue, though maybe a part of that is because sometimes the series feels a lot like it’s all style with only brief moments of substance, even if there’s a lot I like about the Spider-Gwen verse and think is cool about it. If I can fit it in, I’ll give volume 2 a shot.

I’m not sure if throwing Ben into the Guardians book will really improve it, but it can’t hurt. But Bendis is another writer who I think has been on a title for a bit longer than he should, just like Slott, and I’m not sure if this relaunch will change minds. And Kitty Pryde as the new Star-Lord? Meh.

2099 is the book I’m most looking forward to, and while I agree on the costume, I can’t wait to dive into this new direction for Miguel!

I miss when Marvel Adventures told actual original stories and had original art, rather than just using stills from the cartoons. :(.

  8. Personally I liked the Agent Venom stories when he was written by Remender (hell, even some of Eddie’s Venom back in his antihero days where pretty good). I think the problem lies with the marvel not knowing what do with older morally grey characters that don’t fit the modern marvel all-new all-different all-hip superhero writing.

  9. BD you are not alone. I’ve NEVER believed Venom should be anything other than a Spider-Man villain and the same goes for Flash as a supporting character.

Earth 001? Is the Multiverse returning? What gives?

  10. No commentary on Uncanny Avengers? (You can be forgiven for forgetting Spidey’s in that book. Everyone else did.)

  11. I’m not a big fan of these point one issues, especially since we’re currently reading point one Amazing Spider-Man. Like Marvel couldn’t use whole number issues to continue the title during Secret Wars?

I haven’t been a fan of Venom since he left Brock. Venom is evil. ’nuff said.

Still no interest in any book that has to do with any variation of Spider-Man/Spider-Woman/Girl to come out of Spider-Verse. It’s just too much.

Ultimate Spider-Man Spider-Verse? So this is Spider-Man from an alternate reality in an alternate reality? Yeah, confusing.
