Eleven days ago Stillanerd posted about a Deadline article saying that Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (writers of the upcoming Vacation reboot) had been hired on as the writers for the Spider-Man reboot.
Back then it was unofficially official. This week, Daley & Goldstein made if officially official while speaking with NPR:
Daley: We can finally acknowledge that.
Goldstein: We’ve been saying no comment for the last week.
Daley: This is the first time that we can say that we are writing it.
Goldstein: We’re thrilled.
Daley: … He’s a sharp kid and witty and kind of deals with the fact that he’s an outcast and a geek through humor. It is sort of the safety net for geeks like us, so I think we can totally relate to where he’s coming from. As well as the superpowers, which we also have.
So we already knew it, more or less, but now we super officially know it. Heh.

@4: Still, even if screenwriters have to take what they can get, there are subjects that work better than others for any given screenwriter. Paul Jenkins once said in a nice talk at Dragon Con that you’ve got to write about something you know, or you fail. I think that’s true. If these two writers were outcasts and geeks (or have kids in this situation), they may be perfect for the job. It could be that all they’ve done so far were more or less fish-out-of-water jobs. Let’s hope that’s the case …
@4 – I am remaining cautiously optimistic as well.
While their resume gives very little confidence, I think we should definitely keep in mind that screenwriters generally don’t get to pick and choose their projects. If a big production company came along and asked me to write a screenplay for a brain dead teen comedy, I’d take the job without batting an eye. The few movies they’ve written, are not necessarily represenative of their personal tastes or overall skill. Screenwriters deliver the kind of scripts asked of them.
Besides, Daley has a solid acting background. I doubt films like Vacation are his dream project. I prefer to remain cautiously optimistic, though not excited, about the decision.
Well, Daley’s quote is a pretty accurate description of Peter, so their understanding of that is at least one positive in their favor :).

I agree, those trailers look TERRIBLE. I just don’t get the logic in hiring crass comedy screenwriters. The Spider-Man mythos is so much more than light hearted witty banter.
As much as I prefer the MARVEL STUDIO films, any excitement I may have had for this film is slowly dwindling.
My god, has anyone here seen the trailers for the new vacation film? It looks AWFUL.
I sure hope Marvel knows what they’re doing…
