Our pal hornacek sent us word yesterday of a rumor he’d seen out on the Interwebs. I was dubious (in fact I still am) because the site was pretty clickbaity. However, IGN later reported the rumor and also attributed it back to its source – Latino Review.
We’ll go ahead and pass it along. Normally we shy away from clickbaity stuff and unconfirmed casting speculation, but in this case we’ll make an exception.
From Latino Review:
Our buddy El Mayimbe recently posted a rumor recently on his Instagram account naming the new Spider-Man reboot from Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures. The supposed title for the new reboot is called “Spider-Man: The New Avenger”, which would reference the web-slinger as the new addition to the Avengers team. Not much is known about the new Spider-Man film, other than the fact that the reboot would feature a teenage Peter Parker beginning in high-school. Marvel is testing a group of five young actors whose ages range from fifteen to twenty years old. The actors being considered are Nat Wolff (“Paper Towns”), Asa Butterfield (“Hugo”), Tom Holland (“In the Heart of the Sea”), Timothee Chalamet (“Men, Women & Children”), and Liam James (“The Way Way Back”).
They also post a screenshot of the Instagram post which reads as follows:
#UNCONFIRMED #RUMOR Take with the tiniest grain of salt pending further confirmation. I’m being told the working title for the untitled SPIDER-MAN stand alone film is SPIDER-MAN:THE NEW AVENGER Again, it’s Sunday so take with grain pending further confirmation. What do you think of title? #Spiderman #marvel #MCU #marvelcomics #marvelmovies
So until that’s official we’ll take it with a grain of salt – just like the Instagram post directs. Same with all the casting news swirling around right now.
–George Berryman!
Then the film could end with Jonah looking at the camera and saying “That F-ing Spider-Man!”
Why not “Friendly Neighborhood Spider-man”?
@8: That’s a really cool way to look at it. I like it now!
I can see Spidey joining the Avengers as an adult, like he did in the comics, but while he’s still a teen? Not buying it. Though I’m betting he’ll be part of the heroes taking on Thanos in Infinity War at least.
I don’t really want to see Spidey becoming an Avenger right away. Maybe do that in the third movie he is in if you’re going to do it at all. I personally prefer him doing his own thing rather than being on a team.
“Spider-Man: The New Avenger”?? Ugh! It seems like Marvel really wants to do a Spider-Man/Avengers crossover for the next Spidey movie.
If Spider-Man: The New Avenger is indeed the title Sony/Marvel Studios are going with, then it’s one that is loaded with subtext. Because let’s remember that the official title for the first Captain America film was Captain America: The First Avenger. None of the other Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have had the word “Avenger” in their title. Also, Steve Rodgers is all the Marvel movies has been consistently shown to be a symbol of hope, the guy all the other heroes rally behind, and the one who personifies what a superhero ought to be. So to call Spider-Man a “New Avenger” in that context suggests that Spidey, in the MCU, has the potential to become the Captain America of his generation.
Can Spider-Man just stay away from the Avengers, please?! I’m getting tired of those assholes appearing everywhere! The Avengers still sucks!
@#5
I remember that issue. Must have been around 1997 or so
@1 – “Could the movie succed if it’s just called “The Webslinger” or “Peter Parker”?”
As long as they don’t choose “The Webbed Warrior”.
“Spider-Man: The New Avenger” does match the style of the first Cap movie, but still … come on Marvel! No every hero in the MCU has to be an Avenger! Anyone remember the Avengers issue where they have to form a new team out of 267 members, or something like that?
At least after Giant Size X-Men #1 ended with “What are we going to do with 13 X-Men?” the next issue of Uncanny X-Men started by having half of them quit and immediately leave.
We don’t need every hero in the MCU on a team.
I just hope he gets a good, worthy standalone film before they start cramming him into the Avengers.
They’ve been pretty good about that with other character’s standalone films, so far.
I dunno, it sounds too much like a WIP title.
But, on the other hand, maybe they think now Spidey can do fine with only his name plus a subtitle. That being said, “The new Avenger” does sound a bit… lame.
If they’re going to follow the line of thought of the comics, “The Spectacular Spider-Man” would be the obvious choice. And yeah, I agree that maybe they should keep “Ultimate Spider-Man” in case they decide to bring Miles somewhere down the line (which I hope they do, although I don’t want them to rush it either).
As for the alleged candidates for the role… I’m not particularly convinced by any of them.
If their going to use something why not The Avenging Spider-Man???? It was an actual title for a spider-man comic that delt with team ups…
As much as the title would suck, i think this is one of the few ways they could go.
Spectacular Spider-Man…. nah
Peter Parker: Spider-Man…. mediocre
Ultimate Spider-Man …. Maybe one day if Miles is still popular
Only other option for me would me Marvel’s Spider-Man, but Sony wouldn’t allow that.
The main question that comes to mind is…
Is Spidey already embedded enough in popular culture that you could go with a title that doesn’t involve his name. Would it be enough to promote it.
Like DC did with “The Dark Knight” or “Man of Steel”
Could the movie succed if it’s just called “The Webslinger” or “Peter Parker”?
So i guess it’s Spider-Man: The New Avenger. Like he couldn’t carry a franchise on his own.
I’m scared for the german title for part two tho, if it goes the Captain America route…
“Captain America” -> Germany: “Captain America – The First Avenger”
“Captain America – The Winter Soldier” -> Germany: “The Return of the First Avenger”
So Spidey Reboot #2 will simply be called ” The Return of the new Avenger” .
Guess it’s time to start hording vomit bags … 😉
