Variety is reporting that Sony will be producing a new Spidey animated film to be released July 20, 2018.
From Variety:
Spider-Man is going back to his graphic roots. On Thursday, Sony announced a new animated feature for the Marvel superhero from “The Lego Movie” directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
The movie hits theaters July 20, 2018.
Lord and Miller, the filmmaking duo behind “22 Jump Street” and “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,” will write the treatment and produce the Spider-Man movie.
Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman made the disclosure at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. The animated film will exist independently of the projects in the live-action Spider-Man universe.
Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal are on board to produce the picture.
Rothman did not, however, reveal any news on the live-action “Spider-Man” from Marvel’s Cinematic Universe that will debut on July 28, 2017. Marvel’s Kevin Feige and Sony’s Pascal will produce that movie.
Spidey will make his next film appearance in Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War,” which bows May 6, 2016.
Hopefully we will hear more soon!
UPDATE: I’ve edited this to remove the “apart from the Marvel Cinematic Universe” stuff. I’ve read conflicting reports at different sites about whether or not it’s going to be in the MCU. Hopefully we’ll know more soon!
–George Berryman!
They should just make an animated film to give a better conclusion to the spectacular spider-man tv series…
So we’re finally getting an extended episode of the Ultimate Spider-man huh? It’s about time. (Sarcasm)
I would prefer Disney or Pixar doing it.
The LEGO movie is (cough) awesome, I will hear no complaints about it!
This makes me feel uneasy, their most reason movies are overrated shit.
Hope they don’t make any crappy love triangle, the awful love triangle is one of the reasons I hate the LEGO movie.
After reading George Berryman’s recent articles, I have a better understanding of the sort of minds working at Sony and the sort of ideas they think would make for a “good Spider-man movie.” I have no further interest in giving them another dollar of my money anyway. I’ll rent it probably, if it ever even happens. I WILL be seeing the Marvel Spidey film….
when I was reading the article I misread the part about it being from “The Lego Movie” directors and thought it was announcing a LEGO Spider-man movie like the LEGO Batman one that is currently in production…lol
@11 – I could imagine the animation being “anomie-esque” like the DC animated features.
JOSH KEATON, SONY AND MARVEL!
JOSH KEATON!
Animated movie sounds promising, as long as it’s not 90-minute episode of ‘Disney XD’s Ultimate Spider-Man’. We don’t need chibi cutaways on the big screen.
Was it ever confirmed that Spidey will for sure appear in Cap 3: Civil War before his own movie? It states this at the end of the report, but I don’t remember ever reading that officially. Maybe I’m just forgetting!
I’ve been wanting something like fro some time now and I hope they don’t mess it up. Now the big question is, will it be traditional animation or CG. If it’s a movie the trend says it will be CG. I’m also wondering how realistic or cartoonish they will approach the artwork for this supposed movie.
or his origin in a prequel?
Seeing as this is coming out after Spidey will have already made two of his scheduled appearances in MCU cannon, I can’t see this not being related to that universe. It’ll most likey be some sort of ‘untold story’ that takes place between his first solo movie and his second.
Calling it now Garfield will be the voice and this is to “wrap up” the Webb Series.
@1 – Yeah I am reading conflicting messages about that out there tonight. Some say it’s separate from the MCU, others saying it’s part of the MCU. I assume we’ll get some clarification soon. In the meantime, I’ve edited the write-up to reflect the confusion.
Nevermind…
…. can they at least get Josh Keaton to come back? Can you at least get THAT right?
Too bad it won’t be a SSM movie. But I have hopes, it be nice to have a good stand alone animated movie.
I think this is Sony’s compromise to itself regarding control over Spidey. Regardless, it’s just going to continue to crowd the genre and create viewer confusion IMO.
(crosses fingers) Please don’t be Drake Bell, please don’t be Drake Bell, please don’t be Drake Bell …
Ok, I’m confused. According to comicbooknews, this movie will share continuity with the new reboot film (and by extension, the MCU), yet here it says the contrary… Still, I guess it’s going to be good
