Kingpin Wants A Crack At Spidey!

VDKingpinWhen the podcast crew discussed the recent Marvel/Sony Spider-Man deal, we talked about the possibility of what characters might crossover into Spidey’s new movies. From everything we’ve been told, that’s part of the deal – Marvel Cinematic Universe characters also appearing in Spider-Man flicks. When we kicked ideas around Zach even specifically wondered if Kingpin might find his way into a Spidey movie. Apparently Zach wasn’t the only one who is up for seeing that. Actor Vincent D’Onofrio, who is playing the Kingpin in the Netflix Daredevil series, is of the same mind. Here’s what he had to say to IGN:

We asked D’Onofrio if a Spider-Man/Kingpin battle could be in the cards on the big screen, and while he admitted that he has “no idea” at this point, he also said he’d love to do it.

“That would be super-cool, yeah,” said the actor. “To be able to kick Spider-Man’s butt would be awesome.”

Not surprisingly, the secretive Marvel Studios has not revealed any such plans to D’Onofrio yet. Of course, knowing Marvel, anything is possible.

“But we just don’t know about those things,” he continued. “Those are all the Marvel secrets that they never tell us until they need us, so… Yeah, I would do it. I would do it in a second.”

The actor also explains that a talk with Jeph Loeb got him interested in the Kingpin role:

“[It] was just an incredible conversation and during the conversation I realized how much I actually did know of Daredevil’s origin story,” said D’Onofrio. “And I guess I had read a couple of [the comics] as a kid, but I didn’t remember. And [we talked] about the new Fisk. This Fisk that [showrunner] Steven DeKnight was writing and that Jeph wanted to do, which made this Netflix/Marvel series. From that call I think I committed to the project.”

D’Onofrio saw more in the character than just a cartoonish villain.

“You know, they wanted him brought in as a human,” said the actor. “As a real kind of, just a man, who eventually turns into this iconic character. So that’s a fun job. I mean I thought right away, ‘That’s fantastic.’ You can do so many cool things with that.”

The full first season of Daredevil hits Neflix April 10th – this coming Friday.

EDIT: I erroneously said I had mentioned the Kingpin appearing in a Spider-Man movie on the podcast. That was incorrect; it was Zach. I have corrected that above!

  1. Something about this pic makes me think of Lord Varys. The Spider vs. Spider-Man, whadda ya say?

  2. @2 – You can always trust the guy who routinely corrects things he said in order to be factual. 😎

The “drinks with the Kingpin” story is so great because I didn’t know he was the voice of the Kingpin until my fellow podcasters told me! Back in 2002 I just thought I was having drinks with one of the cool recurring guest stars on the old Cosby Show!

  3. George mistakenly takes credit for suggesting that the Kingpin take on Spidey in a future movie? Well now I don’t know if I can trust his story about having drinks with the Kingpin – that was probably J.R.!

  4. I perfectly understand and accept that Kingpin is Daredevil’s Archenemy, but as a kid I was growing up watching the 90’s cartoon where he was one of Spider-Man’s most prominent and interesting foes, so I’ve always easily connected him with Spidey. I’ll never be able to read Kingpin and not hear Roscoe Lee Browne’s voice.

So yeah, seeing D’Onofrio get to take on or interact with Spidey in the MCU would be really awesome to see. As would getting Spidey and Daredevil together. And we’ve never really had a Spidey movie that’s really dealt with the street-crime aspect of the character, so focusing on that would be a good way to differentiate from the last few movies. Though I would think you’d also have to have at least one classic Rogue in the mix as well.
