Kevin Feige Confirms Teenage Spidey For MCU

While speaking with Collider, Kevin Feige confirms that Peter Parker will be in his high school years for his upcoming second reboot and debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

What might this mean for Spidey? No telling yet. With all the speculation on who might play MJ, they may (note I said ‘may’) instead focus on Liz & Betty. What makes me think this? Because Feige says that a lot of his favorite Spider-arcs are from when Peter was in high school. Knowing what a fan he is of the Stan Lee & Steve Ditko Doctor Strange nudges me towards thinking he’s talking about the Stan Lee & Steve Ditko era here as well rather than the messy Ultimate universe.

But then Marvel also decided to go with Scott Lang, a decades dead Janet and a sexagenarian Hank Pym, so what the Hell do I know?

Thanks to PunyParker for the heads-up!

–George Berryman! (Who thinks the sexagenarian line is really funny since it’s Michael Douglas playing Hank!)

  1. I don’t mind him in High school as a starting point so long as they have him grow from there

  2. It lets them keep a young actor longer, without him looking unbelievable as a student.

I’m just afraid this is going to end up like the USM cartoon. Obnoxious super young super ‘hip’ Spidey going around, hanging with the Avengers despite feeling out of place.”

I reckon just let Marvel get the the whole (youthful comedy centric teen Spidey) out of their system. At least then they can say “well we’ve done it our way” and it will probably be a bigger success than the Phony Sony films.

Eventually though, they’re going to have let Peter grow up into adulthood as a mature super hero with the quick sarcastic wit.

  4. We got Peter in high school in ASM. Not to mention half the 2002 film. He graduated both there, and in ASM2. In the rest of ASM2, and the Raimi trilogy, he was around college age.

We’ve seen high school Spidey before.

Peter Parker was a high school student for only 28 issues. Out of how many, out of how many years?

You know what would be new? A Spidey who is say… married? Maybe have him as a teacher, we’ve seen him be a photographer in all the five prior films.

Hell, if they really wanted to? They’ve got the Ghost Rider license back. They’ve got the rights to Mephisto… I’ll stop there before George bans me. 😛

I’m just afraid this is going to end up like the USM cartoon. Obnoxious super young super ‘hip’ Spidey going around, hanging with the Avengers despite feeling out of place.

I’d much rather see him in the Netflix Defenders corne. With street level characters like Daredevil, Power Man, and Iron Fist.

I know that they don’t have the budget, and having him in the movies would make more money, but…

I guess MCU Jessica Jones won’t have gone to school with him… which I don’t mind. At all.

  5. Much as I hate to admit it, it makes sense to tell the Lee/Ditko types of stories in the MCU. Everything else has been done before, and a 16-year-old Spidey definitely stands out.

  6. The actor will get signed on for like a 9 picture deal. They probably want someone young that’s going to last longer in the role as both he and the character grows older

  7. @ #7 Frontier – “At least if MIles is the main Spider-Man in 616 with a married Peter doing…something, post-Secret War”

Miles as the main Spider-Man in 616 won’t sit well with me. I think if Peter is going to be his mentor, they should just give Miles a cool new super hero name.

  8. “At least if MIles is the main Spider-Man in 616 with a married Peter doing…something, post-Secret War”

    Good grief, I hope not.

Meanwhile, I’m glad to hear the news from Feige and hope they do the character of Spider-Man and his teenaged alter ego, Peter Parker, justice. I’ll be curious to find out who they eventually cast.

  9. In fairness, not that I prefer seeing Peter back in High School again and am for Spidey representing “youth,” but for the most part the previous movies have pretty much glossed over Peter’s High School years. He was out midway through the first Raimi movie and I believe he was a Senior in the first Amazing before graduating at the beginning of the second. So a few movies focusing solely on that period would be a change of pace in comparison. Marvel being what it is, I was 100% sure we’d be getting a Peter in high school once the deal was made to put him into the MCU.

If they can use that setting as effectively as the Spectacular cartoon and Bendis’ Ultimate Spider-Man book did, then I’ll be fine with it. And it would be awesome if we get to see Peter go through the same development and progression in the movies that we did with the comics, with him growing more experienced as a hero and going from a teenager to an adult.

I just wonder if they might de-age some of the Supporting Cast to have them in high school with Peter, like in Spectacular and the Raimi movies? Or save a few for the college years, which is when they actually appeared in the comics?

At least if MIles is the main Spider-Man in 616 with a married Peter doing…something, post-Secret War, it means Marvel’s penchant for synergy didn’t rear it’s ugly head.

Ugh…don’t remind me about Hank and Janet. I’m trying not to let that get me down and prevent me from looking forward to Ant-Man.

  10. Wow never saw this coming. I really thought we we’re going to get the mid 50’s Peter from Spider-Man Regin for a second there 😉

  11. So, okay fair enough……….there are a lot of potential stories from those early high school years that Marvel Studios will be able to explore far more accurately and genuinely than Sony could ever have hoped to achieve on their own.

Starting the reboot with a 15-16 year old makes sense to begin with, but after the initial trilogy, I would hope that we eventually get to see the progression of Peter Parker into adulthood, as a fully fledged 28 year old mature super hero.

Even if it doesn’t happen for another 10 years or so, Marvel Studios can’t keep depicting Spider-Man as a perpetual teenager. Those early high school stories in the comics only actually occurred approximately over a 3-4 year period and only accounts for roughly 10% of his history.

  12. Yeah, Marvel wants a teen Peter Parker. Now, here’s a trick. Don’t cast an actor in this 20s or older.

  13. And this is a shock? I think it’s been established for a while that Spider-Man is going to be Peter Parker.
