“Spectacular Spider-Man?”
Latino Review is reporting that Cabin the Woods director Drew Goddard, who had once been attached to the announced Sinister Six movie (now apparently scrapped), will now be helming the newly rebooted MCU Spidey. From their write-up:
There has been much reported on and some news neglected in recent weeks. Kevin Feige and the Marvel team will be producing the new series at Sony in what is envisioned as a three part series to come out over consecutive summers. There is talk about calling the series SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN after yet another Marvel comics series ala the last films being called “Amazing.”
Feige was allowed to join the process only after Ike Perlmutter, Feige’s boss and the man behind the curtain, insisted that former partner and one time friend Avi Arad be removed from the film series. Since Sony had installed Arad as a courtesy back in 2000 it was an easy removal legally. But since former Sony Studio head Amy Pascal made herself a producer on the film on the way out the door, I understand there was a lot of acrimony when Amy informed Avi he was out. Arad will receive an EP credit on the film and instead focus on making a feature out of GHOST IN THE SHELL without any Asian actors.
I understand that Avi’s partner on the recent less-than-stellar reboot Matt Tolmach was so shocked when Pascal (his close friend) informed him she was in and he was out he is now wandering the Sony lot dazed, like after a headbutt from the Rhino.
So the thinking at the moment is that Sony will faze out all the Spidey Verse films they were developing. Yes even the Aunt May film (that was real!) and focus on a story involving Spidey versus the Sinister Six. At one point they were developing a film that was just going to be a spinoff called THE SINISTER SIX. That’s scrapped but the big news is that the director of that film, Drew Goddard, will write AND direct the Spectacular Spider Man movie.
Key things to look for in the new series:
- No new origin story, Spidey exists from the beginning, taken as a given
- New actor, probably an unknown, he will be specifically based in High School and they want him to be able to grow up into the role. The thought being if this works, Spidey can do multiple trilogies for years ala Harry Potter.
- A major part of the first film will involve Spider- Man fighting Iron Man and then trying to pass the “audition” to join the Avengers
- The first film will involved the Sinister Six coming together with the thought to later maybe spin them off.
Nothing official so, as always, take it with a grain of salt until it’s official. But this does pass the smell test.

@#27- I don’t really see the Sinister Six as being that hard to pull off.
If they are going back to High School for Peter, but not do the origin, you can simply have it that Peter has been Spider-Man for a while, and has been fighting supervillains for a while. The Sinister Six could be introduced as prisoners who are broken out by someone like Dr. Octopus or someone like that who is trying to assemble a group of bad guys to take revenge on Spider-Man.
If I was doing it, I would have the introductory credits be done “Casino Royale” style, with a big, colorful animated action sequence that would show Spider-Man’s battles with all the villains, ending with him defeating or imprisoning them, which would set up the Sinister Six team up later in the film.
was thinking of the scene in death of spiderman with iron man tasked to train spiderman. Clearly making up a lesson plan on the hoof he asks him to hit him as hard as he can and spiderman shaking his head replys its a stupid idea that all it would achieve is him breaking his hand. Funnier in the original telling, might work on the big screen.
Sinister six is a lot to bite off. if its true or not sony need to learn marvels discipline for secrecy and fall in behind it, gives more value to the finished poduct.
@#23- I really doubt we’ll see Carlie Cooper in the film series at all. Hell, I doubt we’ll even see her ever again, honestly.
I think Carlie was more of Dan Slott’s pet character than Quesada, regardless of how she was named, and who was later championed by Wacker because he didn’t really know anything about the mythos other than what he oversaw.
Carlie isn’t popular enough to be used in a major film. I think that Slott and Wacker wanted big things out of her, and expected her to be as big of a character as the one they expected her to replace, but I don’t think others in the company felt the same way.
If they are to do a love interest in the new series of films, I wouldn’t be surprised if they went back to MJ. Possibly portraying her either closer to how she was depicted in the Stan Lee/ John Romita Sr days, or Bendis’ depiction of her in USM.
I hope they don’t call it Spectacular Spider-Man. There’s only one media adaptation called Spectacular Spider-Man.
Btw, about the whole friend of Peter in high school, that was not directed at the 616 verse, more towards the Webb films and the Spec. Spider-Man cartoon. Just putting it out there so people don’t go around saying “Oh, that’s not what happened in the comics!” Just a heads up.
@5- George, you nailed my thoughts! And I would tolerate Carlie if she wasn’t a love interest and merely a friend of Peter’s in high school whose dad was a cop in the NYPD (Oh, wait… that’s Gwen. Carbon copy, I guess).
My thoughts on bringing in Goddard is that Feige knows that he was in a lot of Sony stuff from the inner circle, and most likely knows what went wrong so that they don’t try and replicate those same problems. Its one of those ‘learn and adapt’ situations that people seem to be ignoring nowadays.
I think the part of Peter fighting Iron Man would come around in the end, maybe?… Like, after Peter has fought the main villain, done his thing, Iron Man shows up, tests Peter to see what he’s got, and then extends a hand and says, “Congrats, Spider-Man. Welcome to the Avengers.” I can see it playing out like that, and being like a last-few-minutes-before-the-credits sort of thing to set up Avengers: Infinity War.
@22-I can see that suit working out. You sir are an artistic marvel! (Eh, eh?)
This might be a bit weird and out of place for this discussion, but I really hope Spidey’s costume looks great in the new film. Somewhere between the Raimi suit and the ASM 2 suit would be prefect. There isn’t much wrong with the Raimi suit, and my only real complaint with the ASM 2 suit is I greatly dislike the chest and back spider logos. Honestly, just throw the ASM 2 lenses on the Raimi suit and I feel like that’s it, perfection.
@18
George, HR IGN etc are running with “Latino Review reported….” …they don’t run the story as theirs.
Also HR run with only the Goddard part.
BTW everyone are now reporting that he has not met with Marvel yet……
“I’m not saying it was Spider-Man, but it was Spider-Man.”
yeah, its hard knowing what sites to trust when the casting rumors start flying. I didnt even believe the news of Spider-man joining the MCU untill I saw Brad post it here.
1.) I doubt Spidey will unmask in Civil War, as in reveal his identity. Maybe get pressured/attacked for it but not a full reveal. With Civil War, Marvel was already standing by with the Quesada OMD Magic Eraser; the MCU has no such thing.
2.) All casting is BS right now until it’s confirmed. The Goddard stuff could wind up being untrue but right now even Deadline Hollywood, Hollywood Reporter & IGN are going with it so I lean towards true on it. Especially since he was also previously attached to Sony’s Spider franchise. And Goddard’s a fine director. Cabin in the Woods is hysterically fun.
2 questions….first do you think Spidey will unmask in Civil War or will the film not follow the comic, much like AOU wont?
second…out of all of the casting rumors that have flown around do you think any of the names mentioned “pass the smell test” or do you think they are all pretty much equal BS?
Hmmmm… Goddard I bel to be true. The rest is too contradiction. I wait to hear more.
@9 ‘At one point they were developing a film that was just going to be a spinoff called THE SINISTER SIX. That’s scrapped…’
‘The first film will involved the Sinister Six coming together with the thought to later maybe spin them off.’
These two statements COMPLETELY contradict each other…
They really don’t contradict one another. The Sinister Six film that was part of the Marc Webb universe has been scrapped and replaced with potentially a different Sinister Six film down the line. That’s not contradictory.
So Iron Man is going to fight a child?? or a child is going to pick a fight with Iron Man?? The Avengers would even consider a kid joining Avengers??
Peter was in high school for roughly the three years of his publication. In that time he fought many people, even other heroes, who as it turns out were fighting a ‘child.’
@13
I may have been lead astray by some other forums, and the internet the past couple of hours,in general……i apologise.
@7 – “Calm your tits,people.”
Err… Don’t really think anyone here was anything other than calm, Puny. 😎
@11
Basically, the whole this stinks because of the casting timeline…..they can’t cast while they’re in the middle of shooting, that’s common logic.
I’m almost certain now that Thursday is gonna be Spider-Man day…in one way or another.
@10 – It’s about the only part I actually could think is legit out of it along with the Spectacular title.
I think you could have Peter pick a fight or something as a means to prove he’s good enough to be on the team. Maybe frame it in a similar manner to when he tried to join the Fantastic Four because he thought they got paid.
@9 Exactly. The Goddard part is logical, and maybe the only truth in all this word-fest….the rest seems over the top silly.
A whole new trilogy with a Teenage actor,to make it “Happy Potter” -esque with multiple trilogies??……i certainly don’t think so.
PLUS
How can we believe an article that has the following incosistencies…
‘At one point they were developing a film that was just going to be a spinoff called THE SINISTER SIX. That’s scrapped…’
‘The first film will involved the Sinister Six coming together with the thought to later maybe spin them off.’
These two statements COMPLETELY contradict each other….
‘based in High School…’
‘A major part of the first film will involve Spider- Man fighting Iron Man and then trying to pass the “audition” to join the Avengers’
So Iron Man is going to fight a child?? or a child is going to pick a fight with Iron Man?? The Avengers would even consider a kid joining Avengers??
@7 – The part with RDJ was the one that seemed the weirdest mention, though at first I thought they were talking about his first appearance in Civil War or something.
That part definitely doesn’t make sense since I would have thought they’d begun work on casting as soon as the deal was finalized.
Also George : “But this does pass the smell test.”
Some parts of it…..
Calm your tits,people.
It has been debunked by multiple sites, with Goddard’s publicist saying that he hasn’t met with Marvel yet,on the matter…… PLUS,do you REALLY think that in his first outing as an MCUer,they will shove RDJ in there?…..and that S6 will be building up??….aren’t they aware that movies-trailers for the next one is SONY’S thing and not Marvel?
And the biggest IDIOCY of all is that the casting will begin next month……Civil War starts filming next month……how can they be STARTING to look for actors when the film begins shooting??……wake the F up.
@5 – You raise a good point as I’d forgotten about that.
And you’re right that Marvel being in charge provides a much better chance of it being gotten right than if it was Sony. If Goddard being director is true, maybe him working on the previous film was a factor in him being chosen. Much of my concern sort of comes from the villains in most Marvel movies, in my opinion, being the weak link.
I could take Cooper if they make her a girl Peter goes on a date on and then has to ditch to play Spider-Man, followed by her breaking up with him because of it. And then we never see her again.
That I’m very much more confident about as well since I’d like to think Feige and Marvel are fully aware that this is one they can’t screw up given they’re coming off a bunch of other films.
@4 – “I really hope that bit about the Sinister Six is wrong or else that’ll be the first bit of bad news to come out of this.”
It could get tricky but it wouldn’t be impossible. The first X-Men movie managed to get by with multiple villains working together, albeit with some dreadful writing for Sabretooth.
That being said I trust Marvel far, far more to get the Sinister Six right than I do Sony. So Fiege being in charge puts my fears to rest. Well at least on one front. I still fear something asinine like Carlie Cooper being foisted onto us, in which case I will have to carry through with my promise to commit seppuku on the podcast.
“So long as the script is better than I think they’ll be off to a good start. Spectacular being the title is a good pick as well.”
Again, with Fiege I am much more optimistic about the script than I would be if it was just Sony.
I really hope that bit about the Sinister Six is wrong or else that’ll be the first bit of bad news to come out of this. I haven’t seen a movie really balance two villains all that well, let alone an entire team. Most of the six could easily carry a whole movie as the sole villain.
The Iron Man stuff would be irritating, but I guess they might feel the need to explain why he is or isn’t on the Avengers come next time.
Goddard’s not a bad choice. I’d seen Lord and Miller as being mentioned a lot as well.
So long as the script is better than I think they’ll be off to a good start. Spectacular being the title is a good pick as well.
It’d be nice to see the hulk get lost or run away in age of ultra and then spiders “audition” for the avengers can be exactly like ASM annual 3. Hell, you can even have the netflix Daredevil come in for his appearance like in that issue.
I wondered what new adjective they might use for the movies…and you can’t go wrong with Spectacular.
That sounds like it could be palatable. At this point, after the last film, very nearly anything couldn’t be a whole lot worse.
I like that they’re picking up on the Spectacular moniker. That should be good luck.
