Update 2: Marvel has changed the release date of it’s movies. Scroll down for more info.
Update 3: CBR is reporting Andrew Garfield is out as Spider-Man. The press release from Marvel/Sony says nothing about that.
Original Post: Marvel.com just posted this on it’s website. It seems Spider-Man will soon appear in a Marvel produced movie and then his own movie. Sony is working with Marvel Studios to make this happen. The next Spider-Man movie will be coming out on July 28, 2017. Here’s the official Marvel press release.
Marvel’s Kevin Feige to Produce Next Installment of the Spider-Man Franchise with Amy Pascal
(Culver City, California, and Burbank, California February 09, 2015) – Sony Pictures Entertainment and Marvel Studios announced today that Sony is bringing Marvel into the amazing world of Spider-Man.
Under the deal, the new Spider-Man will first appear in aMarvel film from Marvel’s Cinematic Universe (MCU). Sony Pictures will thereafter release the next installment of its $4 billion Spider-Man franchise, on July 28, 2017, in a film that will be co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert team at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. Together, they will collaborate on a new creative direction for the web slinger. Sony Pictures will continue to finance, distribute, own and have final creative control of the Spider-Man films.
Marvel and Sony Pictures are also exploring opportunities to integrate characters from the MCU into future Spider-Man films.
The new relationship follows a decade of speculation among fans about whether Spider-Man – who has always been an integral and important part of the larger Marvel Universe in the comic books – could become part of the Marvel Universe on the big screen. Spider-Man has more than 50 years of history in Marvel’s world, and with this deal, fans will be able to experience Spider-Man taking his rightful place among other Super Heroes in the MCU.
Bob Iger, Chairman and CEO, The Walt Disney Company said: “Spider-Man is one of Marvel’s great characters, beloved around the world. We’re thrilled to work with Sony Pictures to bring the iconic web-slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which opens up fantastic new opportunities for storytelling and franchise building.”
“We always want to collaborate with the best and most successful filmmakers to grow our franchises and develop our characters. Marvel, Kevin Feige and Amy, who helped orchestrate this deal, are the perfect team to help produce the next chapter of Spider-Man,” said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment. “This is the right decision for the franchise, for our business, for Marvel, and for the fans.”
“Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios share a love for the characters in the Spider-Man universe and have a long, successful history of working together. This new level of collaboration is the perfect way to take Peter Parker’s story into the future,” added Doug Belgrad, president, Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group.
“I am thrilled to team with my friends at Sony Pictures along with Amy Pascal to produce the next Spider-Man movie,”said Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. “Amy has been deeply involved in the realization on film of one of the world’s most beloved characters. Marvel’s involvement will hopefully deliver the creative continuity and authenticity that fans demand from the MCU. I am equally excited for the opportunity to have Spider-Man appear in the MCU, something which both we at Marvel, and fans alike, have been looking forward to for years.”
Spider-Man, embraced all over the world, is the most successful franchise in the history of Sony Pictures, with the five films having taken in more than $4 billion worldwide.
Update: Marvel has rescheduled it’s line up of Marvel movies to work in the latest Spider-Man movie.
Four future installments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have received new release dates through 2019, including Thor’s next solo adventure as well as the first films for Black Panther, Captain Marvel and the Inhumans!
Marvel’s “Thor: Ragnarok” will hit theaters November 3, 2017. The following year, Marvel’s “Black Panther” will make its way to theaters on July 6, 2018, and Marvel’s “Captain Marvel” on November 2, 2018. Finally, Marvel’s “Inhumans” will now debut in theaters July 12, 2019.
The previously announced dates for Marvel’s “Avengers: Infinity War Part 1” and “Avengers: Infinity War Part 2” on May 4, 2018 and May 3, 2019, respectively, remain unchanged.

@49 – Leaked image from Captain American: Civil War
@48: They’re adapting the Mini Marvels strips.
@47 – I think the sources were probably wrong about no money being exchanged. The comment about Sony not making the deal if they owned the merchandising rights sounds pretty accurate to me though.
“younger, rebooted Spider-Man ” comment. How could they possibly make him any younger than he was in the ASM movies? Put him in diapers?
Well, here’s rather interesting tidbit about the deal according to the Hollywood Reporter:
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/marvel-deal-sony-opts-lease-772251
Yeah, I’m more than skeptical here that there wasn’t some monetary transaction involved, but the idea that Sony would accept the deal, in part, because Marvel still controlled Spider-Man merchandising definitely sounds credible.
Oh please no OMD. Especially when Civil War won’t have the secret IDs as the main focus like in the comics.
do they have to reboot, maybe a few hints from coulson or fury this guy is out there, he works on his own, having negotiations for a while now, broken down a few times but i think he will be there when it counts. Maybe a one shot of what spidey was doing during the battle of new york and let the audience imagination fill in the rest but he appears in civil war with the impression that he is seasoned, although telling civil war properly could lead to OMD. would sony allow them to do that?
@41 – Logan Lerman? Hmmmmm
Basically…
Sounds like Amy’s “cold, dead hand” has gotten pried open. A few more financial body-blows to Sony Films, and i bet that dead hand pops open.
Spidey’s good now. They’re probably go for Goddard for writing/Directing and Lerman for Peter Parker.
I’m actually really excited. When they said he would be appearing in Civil War, I had my hopes down since, although they did Falcon very well, he was kinda rushed in as being a Spec Ops Paratrooper. My hopes would be that Spidey got his own film; maybe Marvel actually caught my words and decided to use them; the bad thing is, as many of us have already pointed out, there’s a high chance they’ll make him into a teenager, or some loony adult who has to be constantly saved. Hey, Marvel, he took down a Phoenix-powered Colossus and Magik by himself. That’s something no other Marvel hero could do (at least to my knowledge), but since Jeph Loeb isn’t on this project, maybe somebody at Marvel will decide to make him a mature adult.
If anybody wants to see a story integrating into the Avengers done right, go see Unoticable by Frivolous Thoughts. He does a really good job putting Spidey as the focus of his own story; something even Dan Slott can’t do, and also maintains a cute yet serious relationship between him and Gwen. It’s still a crossover between TASM and the MCU, but it’s worth a read to make an example of how to integrate a character correctly. So, here’s a marvelous future, Spidey! (pun intended)
@35 – “Now it feels like anything is possible.”
Except for saving the FF. The FF is still very screwed.
It comes out a day before my birthday, so YEEEEEEEEES.
I really hope they’re able to keep Andrew Garfield around for this, even though it sounds like they won’t.
Still, even if Amy Pascal is still involved, she’s in a reduced role, and Avi Arad isn’t mentioned anywhere, so things are looking great so far!
In regards to Sony keeping final creative control, it most likely is to ensure Marvel doesn’t deliberately sabotage the movies. My impression is that with Kevin on board as producer, he’s been given reign to do what he wants to do, as long as it’s in Sony’s continued interest.
So Inhumans is coming out after Infinity War then?
Now it feels like anything is possible.
All I can say is
— I want jk Simmons to play Jonah forever,
–to see live action kraven & Morbius & Mysterious
—and forTony Curan to play Norman Osbor
(on the syfy show “defiance” his Performance as
datak tarr is what inspired my fan cast of him as Norman,
He relishes in smug indulgent dickery in a richly
Psychotic Osborn way…and as goblin, intimidating/terrifying)
@30 – Hopefully the cancellation of the USM tv show, would be enough to deter Disney from implementing things from the show into the MCU Spider-Man.
It’s possible that the upcoming rebooted Marvel universe Spider-Man could be an early indication as to what the MCU version could be like, seeing as how Marvel are gradually modifying their comics to resemble the MCU.
The Superficial Silk. Coming in 2018
Carlie Cooper: Single Female CSI. Coming to ABC in 2019
Ultimate Spider-man 2: Even More Chibi. Coming in 2019
name drops in AOS and maybe the netflick stuff.
the simmons hint there last week, could be a part of it.
@29 It’s the end of days…
Coming July 28, 2017, Ultimate Spider-man: The Movie
I seriously hope he’s in college but what are the odds of Marvel allowing that. At least we’ll have a Spidey movie every two years.
@28 – If you want to see some insanity, check out some of the other comic sites on the net. Some people are actually hoping Drake Bell get’s cast!!
Good bye Mary Jane, and hello Crazy-Town-Banana-Pants-Peter. You know Disney will hire Drake Bell or someone similar. I wonder who will be cast as Carlie Cooper? ‘Cause she’s perfect…
@26 It’s Disney, as stilanerd pointed out they have lots of cash. Pretty sure Star Wars wasn’t for sale at the time either.
@24 That’s assuming that Spider-Man was for sale and not simply for lease… jeez we’re talking about the character like he’s a house lol. In any event, let’s just rejoice that we are getting at least two movies (one cameo, one solo) where Marvel has some sort of input.
Well let’s pray that this kills off the ‘glass ceiling’, Sinister Six, and Venom vs Carnage spin offs!
I hope this 3rd reboot doesn’t mean that we get yet another origin story movie, this film could be amazing in all other areas but it would be incredibly boring to see the same origin story played out on screen for the 3rd time. I’d really prefer it if they just went for a college age (with a focus on his social circle at college) or adult Peter and skipped high school completely. I’d be nice for Spider-Man to have a solo movie before he’s just thrown in with the Avengers/as a ‘sidekick’ character in another film.
I’m a bit worried that Black Panther and the other P3 movies have been pushed back to accommodate a unmade movie though.
@23- I partly agree with this, I think he’d work better on this side of the ‘MCU’, far away from anything that’s got ‘Civil War’ in the title. 🙂
@21 the problem with thinking it’s merely chump change though is that they don’t own the rights well out right. Despite backing what was probably a truck load of cash over to Sony it was only enough to basically lease their own character back. If Disney truly had the money to drop willy nilly they’d of bought him back.
Would much rather see him in the Netflix/Defenders corner with Daredevil, Cage, and Iron Fist than I would have Spidey in an Avengers film.

There needs to be a new Peter Parker/Spider-Man cast. Both Tobey and Andrew would only remind fans of the other films (for better or worse). New start, new Spidey.
@#20 dornwolf — Whatever amount it was, it probably chump change as far as Disney was concerned as they’re literally rolling in dough. In my imagination, the negotiations between Disney and Sony over Spidey went not unlike that scene in A Civil Action, where Robert Duvall’s character places down a $20 dollar bill in front of John Travolta’s character and tells him “Now let’s imagine that $20 bill has several more zeros at the end of it.” Only in this case, Sony took the money.
I kinda wonder how much Disney ultimately paid Sony just to do this.
#19 Brad — Does it start with the letter “C” and end in “P”? 😀
What does Wrap rhyme with?
continued from #16 — Keep in mind, though, that The Wrap does not exactly have an official source telling them that Andrew Garfield is indeed out as Spidey. Most likely they’re basing this on the fact that Garfield name does not appear anywhere in the official announcement.
And according to the Wrap, it’s also pretty much confirmed that Andrew Garfield will NOT be reprising his role as Peter Parker/Spider-Man as part of Sony’s deal with Marvel. http://www.thewrap.com/spider-man-to-appear-in-upcoming-marvel-cinematic-universe-film/
@#11 George Berryman — And hopefully, new director and writers, don’t forget that. 🙂
And I agree, hence why I said “supposedly.” Because this deal has essentially made Sony a tenant of the House of Mouse with Marvel Studios as it’s landlord.
I still think that Sony has done a lot of good things with Spidey: The costume, the casting, the quibs, the webshooters. I hope that Marvel appreciates these things. Personally, I would love to see Garfield continue as Spidey. He’d fit in well with the MCU, in particular since we got a much more mature Peter Parker in the Civil War comics than what we’re getting right now. If the choose to add another teenager who can be picked upon by Tony et al, then of course, it’ll be a full reboot.
I hope they continue with what Sony started and make the best of things. But then again, I’ve been wrong so many times, I should stop prediciting what I don’t know.
Not Andrew Garfield as Spidey, not interested.
Just a theory (first time posting, longtime visitor) of how it could play into civil war .
Unregistered heroes get rounded up.. one agent tells stark “we found one in Forrest hills, new York. Just brought him in…was hard to put down but
Your tech did the job.” To which tony’d say “As it does. Tell you what, bring the press in. Let’s do this publicly on camera, to show people they can trust
Our intentions.”. Bam, there’s Spiderman…and just as soon as they’re about to remove his mask, in busts cap, the vision, and quicksilver. Spidey is cut loose,
Then cuts loose back to back with cap. After they get away, cap asks Spiderman “who are you, kid. I can tell you’re barely out of your teens by your voice alone”.
Willingly, the mask comes off and the new kid says “I’m peter Parker, I’ve been a science student at NYU for the past 3 years….my uncle….he admired you greatly.
How he saw you…well, let’s just say you’re a big reason why I help people. You were his hero….he was mine. Still is”.
That’d be a good way for a fresh spidey/peter. College aged, uncle Ben front and center again, even a little ‘civil war moment’s teased with the spidey unmasking, except in
The movie it can be thwarted. Only Cap knows Pete is spidey, and cap won’t tell anyone.
The absolute last thing Sony needs is “”final creative control.” It’s what landed the franchise in the rebooted crapper. And by “new creative direction” I’m pretty sure that means another reboot and a new actor.
@9 – I don’t believe the “Sony has final control” thing. Not a bit. Sounds more like a Sony face-saving than anything else. 😎
Alright, I’ll go ahead and eat my words then.
@#1 George Berryman — Indeed. Given the situation Sony was in, not to mention those e-mail leaks, I think most us guessed that it was only matter of time before Marvel and Sony would work out some kind of deal regarding Spider-Man. And even though Sony is supposedly still having the last word when it comes to creative control, you know this is huge win for Disney.
@#2 BD — I have a feeling he’s going to be, Brad, which would be unfortunate as Garfield has been really good as Spidey. I think part of the reason for that might be because Sony and Marvel Studios would want to have as fresh a start as possible (even though it sounds like they’re sort of continuing things of Amazing Spider-Man 2) but also, when the next installment comes around, Garfield is going to be 33-34. Then again, Tobey Maguire was around that age for Spider-Man 3, so perhaps Garfield can play Spidey for more film perhaps.
@#3 Sean — Well, if this does mean another reboot of Spider-Man, the smart approach that Sony and Marvel could do is make the next film both a sequel AND a soft reboot of the franchise. Much like what Marvel did with The Incredible Hulk after Ang Lee’s Hulk, or what G.I. Retaliation did with G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra. For example, the next Amazing Spider-Man film could have a short prologue during the credits which goes over the basics of Spidey’s origin and, if it wants to, Gwen Stacy’s death.
I love the idea of Spider-Man being incorporated into the MCU, but I really hope he gets treated right. I’d love to see a Spidey who can handle himself, and show the other heroes what he can do…not one who has to have the Avengers show up to bail him out of every jam.
They’ve changed the release dates of the other Marvel movies because of this… I wonder if that means rewrites?
Well, Sony still seems to have final creative control, but hopefully Feige and co. can help them turn out something that works.
Looks like everything is getting pushed back a bit to accommodate for Spider-Man from Thor: Ragnarok on with the exception of the Infinity War movies.
finialy!
My god yes. Yes. YES.
Well, at least we can stop speculating on whether it will ever happen.
I’d imagine this would mean another reboot, which will be pretty weird since the last one only happened around 3 years ago. Curious who they’ll end up casting since I’d imagine Garfield is out, which is a bit of a shame from my perspective.
I suppose we can hope it turns out a good movie at the very least. I’m wondering if this means he’ll show up in Civil War, which could be rather odd if he just pops in there as his first introduction into the MCU.
I wonder if Andrew Garfield will be re-cast? I’d think Spider-Man would be an after-credits cameo in Cap 3 and in Avengers 3 and 4.
Aaand there endeth the speculation. At least over part of it. 😎
