Latino Review is reporting this morning that Sony is possibly eyeing Aunt May for her own solo Spider-flick. We kid you not.
Normally I’d roll my eyes and sigh at news like this as obvious clickbait. But Latino Review’s definitely not a clickbaity site for film news. Not by any means.
From their write-up:
Now, it’s my solemn duty to put another wild Sony thrashing Spider-Movie on the pile of rumored Spider-Man movies. I was told by the Latino Review editorial brain-trust that this is completely true: Sony is pursuing an Aunt May movie.
Yes, an Aunt May movie. A movie about Aunt May as a youth, before she was shouldered with the responsibility of raising Peter Parker. The target mood is some sort of espionage story in the vein of AMC’s Mad Men, which sounds like a way of saying “classier Agent Carter” without name-dropping Marvel’s upcoming series.
Oh don’t worry, True Believers. It gets worse. Latino Review wonders if there is ‘Trouble’ on the horizon.
Marvel, sorry for the name drop Sony, released a Mark Millar-penned romance mini-series in 2003 called Trouble that they thought would be the new origin of Spider-Man. It featured teenage versions of Aunt May, Uncle Ben, Richard and Mary Parker. Through a convoluted series of events, May gets teen-pregnant by Richard but gave up baby Peter to Mary who takes the secret of Peter’s true parentage to her grave.
Spider-Man fans were not happy and the story didn’t sell too well, so that was the end of any attempts to focus on young Aunt May and thereby Spider-Man’s origin reverted back to not-being-the-child-of-Aunt-May.
Oh we all remember Trouble, don’t we? Mark Millar’s trainwreck of kindly forgotten Spider-Man non-history that became even more infamous than Spider-Man: Chapter One in its sheer awfulness.
Latino Review continues, including doubling down on the story about Sony’s current Spider-direction:
It seems odd that Sony would give this a try as a way to reboot Spider-Man like Trouble attempted, but using Aunt May as a Agent Peggy Carter replacement character might not have the emotional resonance that Carter has. I’d imagine it’s hard enough to make a successful period, female-lead, espionage thriller regardless of the main character’s future interactions with superheroes. I can’t imagine why Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach, keepers of the Spider-Franchise, think that this is easier than Amazing Spider-Man 3. They’d be the two in charge of this endeavor and it seems unnecessary at best and disastrous at worst.
But that’s what we hear is really happening: Aunt May movie.
Keep in mind there’s not much by way of specifics where Trouble is concerned. That part seems to be speculation. So take it with a huge grain of salt and consider that Sony is (as was earlier suggested in the Latino Review write-up) possibly leaning more towards aping the upcoming Agent Carter.
And here’s some more good news, Crawlspacers. I highly doubt most of what Sony wants to do with Spider-Man, or ‘Glass Ceiling’ or a young Aunt May solo flick will ever see the light of day. They are grasping at straws. A once proud franchise is now reduced to a room full of executives that seem to be trying to out dumb one another. They’ve got a messy rebooted Spider-Man on their hands and they are desperately trying to find ways to turn it into a cinematic universe. But there’s only so much blood you can squeeze from a stone.
What else could this be? Well maybe it’s Sony taking a page from Marvel publishing’s playbook and just trolling fans for the Hell of it. Stay tuned!

Unbelievable people are clamouring for Miles Morales or Spider-Gwen to take over the role of Spider-Man, two of the most dreadful characters I might add, what’s wrong with the fan base? Are they sick of Peter Parker also? Man if One More day never happened Spider-Man would still be cool but no…………..

So Doc Ock is gonna be Aunt May’s asshole boyfriend until she meets Ben so that way the flick can connect with the Sinister 6 film that is supposedly coming out, right? Or am I just reaching? But If my theory is right, with all that espionage and Octopus action going on they should name the movie after that James Bond movie, Octopussy.

And you know, all Sony needs to do is =make a better movie=. They don’t need to have a fret-fit and cough up these hairballs. Just do a better job on the next film. Webb is a good director. Work harder on writing a better screen-play. Identify the particular execs who meddled with ASM2 and lock them a million miles away from ASM3.
The Spider-Man series has almost no bench-strength when it comes to spin-offable characters, especially in the absence of any audience interest. There are no crowds calling for movies about Silk, or Silver Sable, or Black Cat (well, except for our friend DarthFury, 🙂 ).
In fact, based on audience enthusiasm, they should have kept Gwen Stacey alive and made the next movie be about her! I actually suggested that idea here, months ago — I suggested the idea that Sony shock everybody, rebel against 616-continuity, and keep Gwen alive. I don’t think of these Sony movies as 616. But of course such an idea would have been regarded as utter heresy.
Meanwhile, back at Sony Pictures Entertainment…

Oh no doubt this won’t happen. Feels like Sony’s just spitballing and letting it leak to gauge reaction. They won’t make this. Consider it, sure, but doubtful they’d actually make it.
