I know double post I saw @48 literally after I posted and RD said basically what I was getting at
@45 I don’t know man Spider-Gwen got on ongoing for half a one shot and Silk gets one for reasons unknown. If the response is solid and just off of one image it is which was the same for Spider-Gwen they’d have to do something with it.
@#46- True. But keep in mind that Amazing Spider-Man was hardly selling poorly before OMD and BND. It may not have been top 5, but it was in the top 10. That’s still pretty good. And the sales on the book during previous attempts to “fix” the series didn’t exactly light the world on fire. And keep in mind that sales did go down during the initial stretch of BND, not really recovering until Superior Spider-Man. So we can’t really say that good sales would have prevented the editorial fiat to get rid of the marriage. The people doing so were convinced that they would get better sales and more fans by doing so. If the people working on the book now feel the same way about returning the marriage, it’d probably happen regardless of sales as well.
But while there is a lot of doubt coming up regarding this teaser, one way to look at it could be the same way positive reaction helped Spider-Gwen. While there may be no plans to bring back the marriage at this point, a positive reaction from the fans and good sales on this tie in could cause Marvel or the folks in charge of Spider-Man to revisit the question about bringing back the marriage to determine whether or not it would be a viable option.
@46 – “If Married Spidey was an automatic top-5 sales guarantee, it would never have been undone regardless of editorial opinion.”
Oh I have to strongly disagree with that.
@44 After an initial spike, think it would depend entirely on who was working on the book and how much Marvel promoted it, much like it did before. If Married Spidey was an automatic top-5 sales guarantee, it would never have been undone regardless of editorial opinion.
@#44- Yeah, I still doubt this is going to lead to any significant change in the main series.
The presence of the little girl just shows that this isn’t going to change anything in the main Marvel U.
@42: you have no idea. That image is getting so much love. I’ve check marvels Facebook along with newsarama and some others. So many people feeling that this is the right choice. If it happens and is permanent I’d be really surprised if Spider-man wasn’t constantly a top 5 book in sales. So many people would come back and boost sales
Won’t believe it until I see it.
And then the internet exploded…. apparently….
As long as Quesada runs the show at Marvel there’s no way this is a true or permanent reversal of OMD. Hope I’m wrong and if I am I’ll happily start buying ASM again.
If they do reboot, I imagine they really would just do this as the ‘Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow’ equivilent for Marvel and say “Hey look we ended him as a married guy with a kid he got his happy ending” Which may well be the ONE consolation prize of this whole mess and if they do reboot
Actually, a title like that would be infinitely more fun and readable than anything Marvels done with Spidey in years. It could be similar in tone to Hawkeye – only instead on living in a tenement and dealing with russian mobsters, it could be all about Peter trying to blend in with his suburban neighbbors. It could be really fun!
No way am I buying this, I’m calling it right now fans are going to get pissed off when they find out that it is not what they hoped for but man I wish it was true……Come on Marvel enough is enough of a young Peter Parker being shoved into our throats, please I don’t want a Peter Parker that wines about his love life and being a loser, I want him to be a dad and have Mary Jane, but no…….it’s not going to happen Dan Slott just doesn’t like fans of the book who have been reading since the 60’s.
@36: Slice of life Peter Parker stories? Sign me up!
In the biggest twist EVER, it’s discovered that the real Peter and MJ never left Portland at the end of Spiderman the Final Adventure back in 1995. Jackal had a Peter and MJ clone sent in and programmed to say they just got back from Portland. That was clone MJ that lost the baby in Revalations. So real Pete and MJ have been living in Portland for years as a happy couple. And this title will contain their awesome adventures! You’ll thrill to such stories as “Peter heads to rite aid for milk” and “Peter loses MJ in a crowd at a Portland street fair!” Also, “Peter fights for a parking spot at Trader Joes!”
I’m saddled with the ‘Nerd here…they’re current universe is potentially wrapping up, it’s the perfect oppertunity for happy endings…in short, this may indeed be what JMS had planned in 2007 and what Quesada had to be talked out of back then (ironicly by people like Slott)
That way, Dan Slott can get to say “I ended 616 Peter’s story in a tragic way (Superior) AND a happy way (this)”, probably as a one-up to his idol Steven Moffat, who also recently made history with Doctor Who, ending the original regeneration cycle
@#32-Aw man, say it ain’t so!!!!!!!!! Well, at least with Spider-Man it won’t make a difference. In all seriousness Spider-Man’s continuty was jacked up in OMD anyway.
@#30-I doubt that, MJ has pretty firmly been established as not remembering anything from OMD
@#30 QuilSniv — Or, it could be just a reality in which either Peter and MJ rejected Mephisto’s deal, or where they still got married and Mephisto never approached them. In other words, the real 616 universe. 😉
@#31 Al — Thing is though, I’ve been having this gut feeling Marvel was gearing up for a possible line-wide, starting over scratch, Crisis on Infinite Earth’s style reboot ever since the end of Age of Ultron. And everything that been coming out of Marvel since then–All-New X-Men, the return of Spider-Man 2099, Jonathan Hickman’s Incursion story arc in Avengers and New Avengers, the status quo changes to Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Iron Man, etc. Spider-Verse, the Death of Wolverine and now these Secret Wars teasers–make me more convinced than ever that this is what’s going to happen. Of course, if Marvel does indeed do this, they won’t call it a reboot. They’ll call it something like a “re-imagining,” or a “restructuring,” or a “re-alignment,” or a “revamping”–anything but a reboot.
I hope and pray they will not actually go all out and reboot. I truly do. Even Marvel as it is now can be salvaged, even post-OMD Spider-Man.
Other than that let’s not get our hopes up about the marriage being restored but instead treat this with at best caution and at worst fear…because that red haired girl was in One More Day and anything from that resurfacing is cause for concern. This may well be Quesada’s dreaed third part of OMD/OMIT.
That being said the art is nice and it makes me sad seeing this image because frankly it’s what should’ve been from waaaaaaay back in the 1990s. This is where Spider-Man should’ve naturally progressed to and it would’ve been creatively better than where we went and where we are now.
@23- That’s a good point. It could be that MJ, while dating Ollie, starts to regret not really associating with Peter, and Mephisto, who I think allowed her to remember everything that’s gone down in OMD, and he tricks her into reversing things back to pre-OMD, to screw with Peter’s mind. That could be symbolic of Peter with his mask off, and the Mephisto girl pulling at his hair. This could also mean that Peter still revealed his identity back in Civil War, and has possibly gone to a reality Mephisto made where Peter stayed pro-registration, and actually lived happily with his family.
But, we know THAT couldn’t come true, right?….. right?…
I’m in the not getting up hope category. If this had come up before the Secret War announcement and all the teasers showing past events I would easily see it happening as a story. However, it’s merely going to be the Spider-man title for the event probably nothing more.
@26 Slott’s changed his profile images on Twitter to marriage-related pictures, so he’s probably writing it, so it likely is in ASM. Well, I suppose it could be a Learning To Crawl-style mini by him.
@23-Yeah, I was also wondering about when we we’re gonna get one of these Secret Wars/alternate reality teasers for Spider-Man, but I thought marvel was gonna go with the clone saga. So this took me by surprise.
Meh if it happens in the main ASM book I’ll but it. I’m not gonna buy a mini or a one shot of something that has a high probability to be a troll
If they rebuild it, I will come…
Hey I’m as sceptical as the next guy, but this is an awesome image! 🙂
If Marvel really does fix what OMD broke then I will gladly jump on the Spidey bandwagon.
And yes… this is not Mayday. This is the future Redhead from OMD.
But until Marvel shatters my hopes (yet again) I am still excited about whatever this appears to be.
Of course Marvel isn’t bringing the marriage back. But still, that’s some beautiful art.
I was wondering when we we’re going to get one of these Secret Wars/alternate reality teasers for Spider-Man. And yep, it definitely looks connected to One More Day. Because notice their little girl? Contrary to what the Newsarama article is saying, that’s not Mayday. Mayday is a brunette, while that little girl is a redhead. The same as this little girl…http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-a_HLFxMX3Ek/TvOWlPm2YYI/AAAAAAAAALA/R21ZTCoqVo8/s1600/one+more+day+3+%25282%2529.jpg
#20, what do you expect with basement dwelling losers who got butthurt over the marriage in the 80’s because they couldn’t relate to a Spider Man actually progressing in life? I never thought a publishing organization would hire such poor visionaries and writers and then actually implement basically their poor fanfiction version of spider man, but then they did. And I haven’t read it since.
If this is real, then maybe it’s the beginning of them proving me wrong. If it’s just trolling us, they deserve nothing more than our deepest contempt.
@#s1-20 ditto.
This is just mean.
Funny how in just one image Adam Kubert can encapsulate the theme of “responsibility” regarding Spider-Man in a way that writers & editors since JMS haven’t understood.
That being said, Rama is right above in #17. Marvel worked way, way too hard to wreck stuff with OMD and yes, this is a matter of pride (and ego) for Marvel. Specifically for Quesada. To get what he wanted Quesada had to tell one of the most rightfully loathed and awful Spider-Man stories. And then double down on bad storytelling.
Yet it is effective trolling of the fanbase. I see it and yeah it makes me angry. This is the Spider-Man we should have. Instead we get the likes of Carlie Cooper and Cindy “Compelled to hump you!” Moon.
This definitely got my attention and I started to get excited, but then I caught myself. I have so little faith in the current brain trust that I just can’t believe it. Although if they’re just F*’in with fans that’s pretty uncool.
That image is great. Being a father of a little girl myself, these would REALLY be stories I’d want to see!!!!
“Teaser” is right. This will amount to nothing. The marriage isn’t coming back unless there’s a total regime change at marvel.
This is just more trolling to drum up controversy and hype.
You know what they say…if it is too good to be true. I hope this is real, but in my heart I know better. They pushed this OMD thing so hard that now it is more a matter of pride to keep then it is in anyway to make the story better (which is never really did anyway.)
It’s a great image! I find it interesting that they choose do to it within the pages of Amazing Spider-Man. Obviously it is a way for Marvel to spike interest and sales on a future story. Just imagine if you change the color of the girls hair in the picture to being blonde. The colors of their clothes also make me think the image is a red herring, something to do with the Green Goblin colors.
I agree with George and Newsarama, they getting our hopes up … But i’ll take it because i’m fond of this evolution or Spider-Man!
Seeing this and figuring its more of the alternate universes that will make up Secret Wars. I had a thought, what if the wars are not between the heroes but them invading the various realities not by choice and seeing how life could have been and in doing so. They are at war with themselves if they should change or leave it that way. Then what happens is the various heroes of those realities get all bent out of shape due to these alternate versions of themselves coming up and destroying everything or know they could destroy everything. That would be a Secret War because the only people aware of it happening are the realities the heroes falling into. In this case, Peter finds himself where OMD never happened. He finds out… he likes it here and the Peter Parker of that reality goes: “Get out of here you devil dealer!” “Don’t screw up my life like you did yours!” Food for thought.
That teaser image looks exactly right for Peter Parker.
And to Marvel execs who insist that Peter could never live a superhero life with a wife and kids: These are fictional characters in a fantasy story, so you can make them do whatever you would like them to do. Don’t talk like there are some external cosmic rules that prevent you from writing his life in a certain way.
You want MJ to cope successfully with the worries of being Mrs. Spider-Man? Write her that way. You want Peter’s kids to be mostly safe, despite their dad being Spider-Man? Write it that way. The real world is full of police officers who are married and have kids, military personnel who are married and have kids. Just study how successful military families cope and develop, and poach ideas off those insights.
These aren’t nature-documentaries, and y’all write whatever you feel like doing with everything else anyway, which the genre allows.
Putty in their hands…that’s fandom.
Marriage never left the printed medium in the seven/eight years it’s been away (newspaper strip), Slott’s “Mom would never leave him ever” line from Mayday in ASM#8….
…I’m going to give this some leverage. If they burn me, I still have the dailys, they will never get rid of Peter/MJ. Not completly.
I don’t know if I’d rather laugh, cry or get mad.
Newsarama put it best: “‘Summer 2015’ Teaser – Now Marvel’s Just F-in With You.”
We don’t necessarily know what it is yet, but we all certainly know what it isn’t.
Best case scenario? It’s a brief reminder that someone will come along after Quesada, after Brevoort, after Slott, and fix what Quesada broke.
Worst case scenario? Quesada’s coming back to finish the third part of his “Eff you, Spidey fans!” trilogy.
I can only hope this becomes a (permanent) reality.
So, can I assume this is the “Spider-man-related freakout” moment Dan Slott is referring to on his Twitter page — the one I’ll know when I see it? I’m not freaking out or anything. My first thought was, “That? Okay.”
Man Marvel…down the rabbit hole…again? Hopefully this means mephisto finally loses in some form or another
you know what, despite this image most likely trolling, I cant help but feel seeing that image of peter and mj with a little girl does look very natural to me.
I’m guessing Peter visits an alternate reality where OMD never happened or something like that. Could be interesting, doubt it’ll be a full retconning. Even if they did bring back the marriage into the regular status quo, they’d never introduce a kid as well. I can imagine them removing the OMD mindwipes just to make the timeline less confusing though.
Still don’t think a full Marvel reboot is that likely either, Marvel seem to take pride in maintaining their continuity while DC keeps rebooting. Maybe some retconning and streamlining, wouldn’t be surprised to see Miles Morales merged into the MU, but I imagine the broad timeline will remain intact.
I just…
I really, really, really, REALLY want to be excited for this…
But I’m worried.
I was wondering if something like this would come up, though I was expecting more like a revisit for OMD. But Slott’s writing, and if ANYONE is going to restore the marriage, Slott has reached the point where I simply don’t think he “deserves” to be the one to write that.
Since this is part of the Secret Wars stuff, this is probably going to turn out to be an alternate universe.
Wow has it really been 8 years since OMD? I feel old….
I’m not buying it.
Mayday is not a redhead. lol
Oh, Slott. You sly troll…
Would love this to be what it apears to be but I’m not going to get my hopes up…
Internet is going to explode but it’s not going to be permanent/ a 616 story. It’s another tie in to the likely reboot event of the Marvel Universe coming next summer. I think it’s a pretty sore topic to be baiting fans with though. Don’t think this can end well!
